Re-rate: Just placed another order and they only had 50% of the items they had listed on their website. Make sure you call them after you place your order to substitute out of stock items.

As a mail order customer, I can second Murph's review of this fine store. One word of caution: when you place an order via the internet, place a follow-up phone call to make sure they got the order. Their server has failed in the past and also they could be out of some of the selections. Ohter than that, they're great.

Visited on a Saturday night an hour before closing. Not many people in the store.

V - Open, bright, clean not crowded in anyway. Six foot wooden shelves all around. Wine, beer, ciders, vermouth. As well as a tasting table that seemed to be open, the opportunity to get a beer on tap and walk around the store and finally a small restaurant. 3.75

Q - 4.0

Ser - Three or four folks all asked if I needed help. Friendly but did not ask questions so no idea about their beer knowledge. 4.0

Sel - Excellent selection. Especially for Blacksburg. Probably the best beer shop in town. A great domestic selection as well as international. Virginia selection seemed boring and not up to par with the others. 4.5

Based on notes take during a visit to Blacksburg a few months ago.

I already knew about about the range of beers offered by the Vintage Cellar from their website and so arranged to visit. The places is pleasant inside and the staff are both helpful and knowledgeable (e.g., I know from a chat with one of the folks that they actively organize tastings and are always looking to bring in some new beers.)

While I can't say much about the wines on offer, the stock of beer is wide ranging, well organized and mostly within it's shelf life (indeed it seemed to me that they had fewer out of code beers that I've learned to expect in lots of other bottle shops).

I was able to pick up and bring home with me some bottles that I'd not tried (and in some cases not even seen anywhere else).

The prices seemed reasonable and I was also impressed with the range of VA breweries they had in stock.

Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area or are in the mood for a beer stop when taking a break from the heavy traffic on Interstate 81. (it's not just on and off but it's also not a long drive from the Interstate exit.)

A place I regularly stop in when I'm in town. Good vibe from generally polite employees who are enthusiastic about the products they sell. The store is half a wine store and half craft beer, it used to just be wine but adapted to serve the needs of craft brewers and took the same approach to selling beer that they do to selling wine. Good mix of local and national brands. Pricing can sometimes be a dollar or two higher for a six pack versus Kroger for the brands that they both sell.

Great all around place for everything beer. Great selection of locals, domestic craft and imports. Their service isn't what I would define as spectacular, but adequate. I actually don't mind that much but sometimes, it's nice to have someone ask if I need anything. It's definitely worth a trip.

My review is an online purchase from Vintage Cellar. Once in a while I order shelf beers I haven't had from other parts of the country. I've been fortunate to find great retailers that sell singles and are reputable. Vintage Cellar is just that.

My order was promptly processed, and I received a status email from their shipping manager.

I am very happy with my order and service they provided. I will definitely order from these guys when I have the urge to purchase beers from this area.

Cheers!

I have been visiting the Vintage Cellar for many years now as I attented Virginia Tech and I absolutely love this place. I have no idea how the previous review could have been made outside of the fact that with a smaller staff at times and a very busy store, sometimes you have to wait your turn for service. I have NEVER had a bad experience purchasing beer here and as far as service is concerned I have nothing but great things to say. The staff is extremely personable and will go out of their way to pair beverages with food or just to shoot the crap with you about a recent drinking experience.

Now about the beer. The Vintage Cellar has a HUGE selection of import beers from Belgium to Germany and anything in between in the form of singles and bombers and a very solid domestic selection. They tend to get a better distribution than other stores in the area.

Living in West Virginia, the craft beer selection is very limited. It is worth the two plus hour drive twice a year to "stock up" on the beers that are unavailable in my area. I have been making this drive since 1996 and the selection continues to get better. Great selection of micro's, import's, and seasonal's.

Great beer selection, good price. Kegs are even pretty reasonable. Huge wine selection also. Fridays they have a free beer tasting, with usually 3-5 beers, they also do wine tastings on saturdays if I remember correctly. Staff really knows their stuff and is very friendly and helpful. It is well organized and easy to find what you are looking for and also very easy to just have a look around.

Spent a day in Blacksburg recently (second time ever) and sought this place out due to comments here on BA. I'm glad I did. I'm from NC and this bottle shop carries a lot of great stuff that's not available in my neck of the woods: Firestone Walker, Maine Beer Co, Troegs (to name a few), and of course, a lot of locally crafted brews. The beer section isn't huge but it covers a lot of brands and styles. The service is impeccable. I had a list of brews I specifically wanted and the guys found my stuff quickly and helped me carry the haul to my car. I'll stop by every time I'm in the area.

I visited the Vintage Cellar on a Saturday during a day trip to Blacksburg. I am from WV where good beer is nearly impossible to find so this place was amazing to what I am used to.

Atmosphere was good, it was about 4:00 on Saturday so it was pretty crowded. As others mentioned, wine is in the front, beer in the back. I like how the beer was separated by region. My only complaint is that it was pretty crowded in the beer section. The shelves are all very close together and every time I picked an isle to focus on, it seemed like I was in someones way.

As for quality, they pretty much have the best beer selection possible in the state of Virginia, so I'll give them a 5 for that.

I was never approached by am employee the 30 mins I was there, but as I stated earlier, they were pretty busy. I did overhear a conversation with an employee and a customer and he seemed like he Definitelt know what he was along about, making great recommendations.

Selection is the best you could possibly ask for in the area. I brought my BA want list with me and crossed off many from my list, including two 4packs of FBS. The only thing that keeps me from grading selection a 5, is that I've ordered online from them several times, and they won't sell many of the popular beers to online customers. I understand keeping beers for local customers, but I've ordered about ten times now from them. They've even told me once that they didn't have beers in stock, I drove there the next day and saw them on the shelf.

Prices are about $3 more per bomber more than most. Plan to pay up to a 40% mark up on special release bottles.

Overall this place is awesome. I live almost 2 hours away but usually make a trip down here about once a month. You could easily spend $100's of dollars here.

This is a specialty wine and beer store, located near a state run liquor store and a grocery store. The quality of products and selection is good, although at times, it is advised to look at dates. They have pretty much anything that is distributed in Virginia. Prices are based mainly on singles, although there is a light discount for buying 6 packs or cases of one beer. Also they receive most limited releases. The staff is very helpful if you ask for assistance, and will guide you to what you want (in both beer and wine). Overall, this is a recommended store. In addition, if you want to try different beers, join their beer of the month club, which gives you a $10-20 mixed six pack of highly rated beers. Definitely a good way to try many different beers. Also, they have beer tastings on Friday afternoons, which is a time to try some beers and sometimes talk to a brewery rep.

I love this place. Whenever I am visiting my parents, I go here and stock up on brews.

The atmosphere is great. You walk in and you know you're in a place where people know what they're doing and are passionate about the craft. Clean, appropriate lighting and plenty of friendly faces.

I'm not entirely sure what "quality" is supposed to mean but I'll take a whack at how I interpret it. The store is well-organized. In the front half, a large selection of wines greets the customer. The back half is all beer, organized by country. In the case of American beers, by east coast/west coast and then by brewery. They do occasional tastings, though I haven't been in enough to know how often they are.

I've seen reviews where service seems to be the weak spot of The Vintage Cellar. I happen to disagree. Whenever I go in, despite my visits often being weeks or months apart, they remember me. Moreover, I'm often given a tour of what's new since the last time I visited. They're good about giving facebook updates on what's new in the store and exceptional at taking and remembering reservations for highly sought after beer.

The selection is wonderful and expanding. Troegs, Ballast Point, Founders, Smuttynose, Ommegang, North Coast, Avery, Epic, Boulder. Many, many, many to choose from. This is the most important aspect of any store, in my opinion, and Vintage Cellar knocks it out of the park.

Lastly, the prices are absolutely reasonable. What you pay is what you would expect just about anywhere else. Fair and reasonable, indeed.

Vintage Cellar is simply epic. I cannot think of another shop quite like it on the eastern seaboard. Not only is the selection massive, but the staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable (I was in on a Sunday).

It really will take your breath away. I had been told of it's size and selection, but you really have to see it to believe it. My family and I spent two and a half hours browsing around, and I could have easily spent another 45 minutes to an hour in there.

It's as if every single bottle of beer that is distributed within the great state of Virginia is represented here. Everything. American, imports, hard to find bottles, you name it. They also have a really, really high quality selection of vino too.

This is the kind of place you make plans to visit. Book a room down the block, find something for the kiddies and the wife to do for a day or two, as you could easily spend days (and whole paychecks) in Vintage Cellar.

This is a great store for wine and (especially) beer! Awesome closeout deals and tastings on Friday afternoons!

Service- The only knock I would give this place is that the employees can take a while to warm up to you, when you first come in rarely will you get much attention and if you head to the back to look at beer especially there are only really one or two guys that will bother to help you (out of about a half-dozen employees), the others focus on wine and even then only two of them seem to be real well informed (to the others' credit however they know better than to pretend they know what they are talking about and will get one of the more knowledgeable employees).

Selection- Exceptional! Great variety of East Coast/West Coast beers, including many local ones available in single bottles, packs, or kegs. There is also a pretty good selection of foreign beers on the side wall though not as exhaustive as the domestic selection

Value- I list Vintage Cellar as reasonable; the price, as you would expect, for a lot of the more common but still high-quality beers (example: Sierra Nevada, Flying Dog, etc) is higher than the Kroger next door which has to its credit a good beer selection as well (though I still buy from Vintage to support them as a small business). However, this is offset by having awesome closeout sales on a wide variety of different beers (and even better sales on wine if you are so inclined). The closeouts for example turned me on to a really good Austrian lager (Hopten Konig) that was only 4.95 for a six-pack!

They even have beer tastings Friday afternoons which are often a mix of really great beers and some that are not so good that they are trying to get rid of (admitted to me by an employee).

All in all this is a great shop and if you approach the staff they will definitely help you or even do a custom order for you, but don't walk in expecting an employee to shadow you the whole time at your beck and call. I go often and recommend others do the same!

Stopped by Vintage Cellar when I visited the family over Christmas. Of course, the wine was up at the front of the store and the beer was placed at the way back. It was a well-kept store; clean and organized.

The selection was fantastic. I'm from an area of the country where selection is limited and good beer stores are hard to come by... All of the beers were organized by regions and were available as singles - which was great because I didn't have to buy 4 or 6 packs when I was by limited space in my checked luggage. They seem to keep it well-stocked when compared to other stores in the area. I would assume by the quantity of beers that they have the majority if not all the beers available from distributors.

My only gripe would be the service. When I walked into the store I knew exactly what I was looking for, and as a result I wasn't looking for much assistance. On the other hand, I wasn't approached by anybody (neither were my brother and father who were with me). I hardly require assistance at all, but atleast a friendly "hello" would be nice (the people shopping the wine got all the assistance they could ask for). When I went to check out, the gentlemen helping me said, "you know much about this junk?" Sorry, didn't know I was spending $70 on junk. When I visit the family again I will definitely stop by this store again, despite the service (or lack thereof).

I finally get a chance to review VC. My experiences have all been shopping on their online store.

This time around, I ordered a case of Yuengling Traditional Lager in cans. Well, I placed the order and soon got an email acknowledging the order.

Next thing I knew, I got an email with the shipping info so I could track it online.

It arrived quickly and safely because of the excellent packing job.

This is a *great* store to deal with and I'll be buying from Vintage Cellar again!

Oh, and my final cost for the beer including shipping came to around $58 which I split with a fellow Yuengling fan. :^)

We swung by Vintage Cellar on the way home from Asheville, not exactly convenient from the highway but not terrible - maybe 10-15 out of the way. Regardless, the place proved worthy of a slight detour.

The store itself is quite large, with a good amount of floorspace devoted to wine and other non-beer items. The beer selection is huge, arranged by region, and quite extensive. I was in search of Shooting Creek, which doesn't really make it out of the immediate area. If it's sold in Virginia, chances are it will pass through this store. Not perfect, but damn near close. The selection is very much exhaustive across all styles and places. Loads of singles.

Service was fine. Wasn't approached on the sales floor but questions were answered at checkout.

Stopped in during a recent trip through the area. Just up the road from the Bull and Bones Brewpub. Easy to find in the Kroger shopping center. Decent sized store that appeared to be split about 60% wine / 40% beer. Imports were mainly along the back, left wall, with the American micros in about 4 small aisles next to them. Nice selection of regional brews, as well as the likes of Stone, New Belgium, New Holland, Founders, Bells, DFH, etc. Pretty good selection for the area, for sure. I entered the store and browsed for about 10-15 minutes before leaving and not a word was spoken to me by the 6 or 7 employees working until I was walking out the door. "Did you find what you were looking for?" they asked...."Yeah, the door" I replied. Good store...one I probably will stop into again...but their service didn't impress me at all. That may have been why I left emptied handed.

This place definitely deserves the high ratings it's been getting. One of the best selections I've come across recently, hundreds of beers, maybe 400-500 beers to choose from (just a guess). There were 80 or so from Germany, maybe 150 from Belgium, and huge amounts from the USA. Every beer is available as singles which is a huge plus.

I rated the service higher than average too, as the check-out person gave me a discount on some of the beers which wasn't listed on the shelves (Terrapins are on sale this month and she remembered). Not much else to add that hasn't been said already by other reviewers, this place is a must-see in western VA.

This is the best beer shop i have been to, however i live in Beckley WV, so that is not saying much, but it is definitely worth the drive to Blacksburg just to stop in.

They have a huge selection of beer split up by region and of course a nice little shelf in the corner for Trappist beers. got a full set of rocheforts here.

They have a large selection of wine and even mead and sake. very nice place and friendly staff. The second time i went they were doing a wine tasting which was really neat.

you can also buy online, but for me it's cheaper to make the drive down there.

i do wish they would get a bit more of a selection such as Three Floyd's and some west coast stuff.

top notch place though! highly recommended.

I love this shop. They used to have two locations one in Radford, another in Blacksburg. However now, there is only the one in Bburg, but they seem like a much better organized place now. I make a trip a month only to visit this place. They has the shop split about 50/50 for wine and beer, which is rare. Also the sections are geographic, which makes it easy to make a themed six-pack. Generally the staff is OK, though I have had one particular clerk who is slightly condescending to EVERYONE. That aside this is the premier beer site for the region. Kegs and shipping are also very reasonably priced.

Let's get the glowing praise out of the way first: Vintage Cellar is awesome. Great beer selection, ESPECIALLY considering its location (Blacksburg is hardly a bustling metropolis).

They have multiple rows of beers divided up by brewery location, with a very knowledgeable staff that can field just about any question. As well as having a fantastic selection, they post a good amount of scores on the shelving for easy beer comparison. If you're a beer fan, be prepared to run up a pretty decent bill. They have an amazing wine selection as well, but this is BA so I digress.

They ship as well! Central PA beer selection tends to suck, so I am definitely going to give this a try. I'll let you know how it goes.

Also, on weekends, you can catch the Plaid Avenger himself stocking shelves and answering questions.

I have been wanting to hit this place for some time so I am glad we stayed in the area on our way down to Asheville so we could stop by in the morning.

Located in a typical strip mall next to the Kroger's in the main north/south drag in Blacksburg.

Beer is located to left and rear of the store with win and other stuff in front. I think just about everything distributed in Virginia is here, or just about! A nice selection of European imports located along the wall with a nice assortment of American craft located in perpendicular aisles.

Service was decent to improved with an at first can I help you, no thanks. To when I had a question about some local beers the guy went to the point of looking through the entire inventory to make sure they had it.

Lots of great choices and we came away with a nice box of beer....to include a basically sold out everywhere else 6'er of Duck-Rabbit Schwarzbier!

They will even take your order and then hold beer for you as long as it's paid for. Heck they had a box marked for a dude that was from February, we visited in September!

Overall a great store that I will, without hesitation, visit again when in the area.
