Big hop nose, both floral and citrus hop smelling. There's a hint of brown sugary malt under all that.

Dark red, nice thick lasting head. Pretty cloudy though.

Nice toasty and bready malt character hits me up front but then comes big time hops, both flavor and bitterness. Hop flavor comes off mostly citrussy but with some grassy flavor too. There's some nice roast malt flavor too, particularly in the aftertaste. There's also a lingering floral hop aftertaste too.

Medium to full bodied with very smooth carbonation level.

Pretty easy to drink Hoppy Northwest offering. It's not mind-numbingly strong or way bitter hoppy. It's just big and hop dominant. Personally I like it but it's not a blow away type of impressed.

I'm somewhat skeptical of the claim that this beer is 11% ABV. The beer projects plenty of alcohol potency and hop power and Water Street only serves it in a 10-oz. tumbler glass - a vessel more suited to Scotch than beer and that doesn't allow for much by way of visual inspection or aromatic focus. Still, in the absence of much to look at or smell, Big Phatty is reasonably enjoyable for its strong bittering and slight licorice notes in the finish. Its principle drawback is that the hops and alcohol sequester all else of potential consequence.

Poured at OBF06. Deep deep copper body with tight brown head. Lots of bubbles keep the foam through the drink.

Aroma is like a malt silo - earthy, bready and a little bit old.

Taste is a sweet and carmel flourish with just enough bittering to balance the sweetness. There's a slight hully feel to the body - lots of unfermented constituents that give the beer substance. The finish is dry and almost woody. Nice, but not insisting.
