Style: American Pale Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): not listed

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Germans brought lager beer to America in the 19th century. They brewed those early American lagers using a combination of local and traditional ingredients. In keeping with tradition we do the same. Local water and malted barley combine with traditional German hops and yeast means that Gryph is made the way that American lagers always should have been, with zero compromise on quality. It's an easy drinker with a slight malt sweetness and light hop flavor and aroma. This refreshing beer has a crisp and clean finish.

Just had this beer

Light amber to pale color. Little to no aroma. Maybe some maltiness but not much else. Taste reminds me of miller. Seems like they may use corn in this beer, not much else to report. Mouthfeel is about in line with Miller but just a little heavier.

Overall this might be ok on a hot summer day but it is nothing special.

On-tap... a couple of (generous) samplers.

It now seems as if this is to be the replacement of the Downtown Honey Brown beer at Olde Main (since late spring 2006). Clear and light-straw in appearance, yet not entirely devoid of color. Smells like... not much -- maybe a hint of malts, hops, and/or grasses -- but at least it's not obnoxious. Taste-wise, it's something like a watered down Czech Pilsner. Light-bodied and relatively smooth. About as drinkable as water. Brewed with care... but not for discriminating customers.

According to bar personnel, this is Olde Main's in-house alternative to Miller Lite, etc. Granted, it's much better than such swill, but that doesn't mean it's any good. Basically if you're reading beeradvocate.com, you'll have no interest in having a pint of this.
