330 ml clear bottle in cardboard box, now available in Norway (Vinmonopolet, bestillingsutvalget) - also at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 7.4%. Clear mahogany coloured beer with an off-white to beige head. Intense aroma of oak rum cask, notes of vanilla, spices, alcohol, brown sugar, treacle, rum-raisin and dark dried fruits. The flavour is distinctly oaky, but more mellow and rounded (without the strong notes of fresh wood) compared to the ordinary Innis & Gunn. Moderate sweetness, moderate notes of rum and spices, dry finish, very moderate hops. Should not be drunk too cold.

A very noticeable rum taste too it, almost candied in the way it finishes. This beer is a good choice for someone who genuinely enjoys the taste of sweet rums, but if you don't this may be a miss.

I do like the overall concept of finishing beer in different types of wood. This particular incarnation is quite fruity, almost sweet, and I like the way it balances the roughness that is typical of a Wee Heavy. The smell and flavour are the definite highlights. I picked up the rum smell, but it is harder to discern in the mouth. The vanilla, toffee, and malt dominate the taste, with a faint hop finish. Overall, this is an enjoyable (and different) Scotch Ale.

Pours a clear dark copper colour with a thin beige head that has pretty good retention. The nose is quite light with some wood, caramel and a tiny bit of rum. The taste reveals much of the same with the wood coming to the forefront. There is also some sweet bread, toffee and hoppy bitterness rounding up the flavour. The carbonation is active but not overwhelming. I just wish that there was a bit more on the nose and the flavour was a bit more complex as both finish very quickly.

Copper color with a thin head with short retention.
Light aroma with notes of rum, dark fruits and toffee.
Flavor with notes of toasted malts, wood, toffee, bubblegum, dry fruits, vanilla, spices, coconut and prunes. Dry aftertaste with a mild bitterness.
Medium body with mild carbonation. Alcohol of 6.8% is absent.
Easy to drink Scotch Ale with nice notes of prunes and coconut, usual vanilla from the brand with a mild rum base. I preferred their regular version. Maybe is just the expectation of bold rum notes given US exemplars.

As a sometimes rum drinker I enjoyed the hint of rum in the finish of this wee heavy.

Purchased at the LCBO for around $3.00 for a 330ml bottle. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well put pours a tiny head this is gone in no time. Dark gold almost brown color. Clear

S- Has that rum scent. Bubble gum and malt

T- Lots of rum and spice. Good malt backbone. Warm but not hot

M- Very dry and crisp.

O- A good blend. Like it and will buy again one day.

Food Pairing

This pretty good beer went well with..... Beef Wellington served with root veggies and potatoes.

6.8 %.

The colour is amber-brown, the liquid clear. The finger thick off-white head sinks quickly to a thin lid leaving no lacing.

The smell got a medium strong clean bitterness. Malty flavours of rye bread, caramel and mild chocolate. Hints of brown sugar and rum.

The taste is bitter-sweet. Floral hops, alcohol and brown sugar/caramel. Quite a lot of dark bread and dried fruits. Medium body. The aftertaste is less bitter. Sticky caramel malt and some alcohol. Growing bitterness and flowers in the finish.

The carbonation is medium strong, the few mid-sized bubbles are sharp. The liquid is mid-smooth.

Not as buttery as I had expected. Quite a nice Scotch ale with hint of rum.

Pours a copper, clear brown lace, with an off white head that does not hold for too long. Smell of fruits, nuts, caramel, vanilla and certainly some oak, though I can't detect the rum. A bit watery body, but good palate. Taste of woods, vanilla, some rum here, fruits. Good. Maybe not to bold for my taste, but that's just my taste.
