Look: Extremely dark brown, black unless you hold it up to light. Small white head with decent retention.

Smell: Citrus, a little yeast and malt, and a sweet undercurrent.

Taste: A subdued porter flavor with minimal roasted flavor. A little hop bitterness mixed with that sweetness.

Mouthfeel: A little thick and decent carbonation.

Overall: Not really detecting a lot of rum, but still a good beer.

Brown with an amber tint. There's a quarter inch of densely creamy light brown to beige on top. The aroma is a blend of caramel, cola, oak, dark rum, and German bittering hops. I taste the oak and sweet rum along with caramel and alcohol. The mouth is a bit thick and warm with alcohol. Hard to believe it is only 6.8%.

Taste: Mollases, maple, rum, oak, butterscotch, and figs.
Mouthfeel: Medium light.
Overall: An enjoyable scotch ale from Innis and Gunn.

Interesting beer. Cherry wood color...transparent and deep. The head is slim and leaves a wonderful lace. Woody aroma...a bit smokey, peaty, malty, and interesting. I didn't get any rum, but it does have a boozy quality. Full in body and drinkable.

Assumed 11.2 oz. bottle aged on rum chips for 57 days. Why 57? Did someone get bored? Fondness for prime numbers? Not germane. But still.

The pour is lovely ruby red with highlights of copper piping with plenty of visible carbonation. As with the original, nose is light malt, caramel, vanilla. No rum was harmed in creating this beer’s aroma.

Innis & Gunn Rum Aged – the rum chips have had a poor effect on this fine brew. Where the original had a lot going on, somebody hit the mute button here. Light rum, astringency, touch of malt, vanishingly tiny bit of vanilla, & the whole thing tastes like it’s been left out in the sun for six years.

Meh. I don’t know how you can take the original beer (which is excellent), stick rum chips into it, & come away with this. Sub-mediocre.

Dark, reddish-copper colored body topped with a one-finger thick, frothy head. Caramel sweetness infused with a rum barrel booziness; plum. Much of the flavor spins off from the aroma; boozier; a hint of hazelnut. Seems a bit thin yet with plenty of residual sugars adding body; slick and smooth; some alcohol dryness, perhaps some from the barrel aging as well.

By and large, this beer is a fine mix of malt heaviness with some rum barrel booze and wood. Caramelized sugars give things a brown sugar and mixed nuts quality. It has enough body to make this seem like a sipping beer yet knocking a few wouldn't be a problem either. A fine malt-forward beer with depth and complexity.

A good, somewhat lighter dark beer. Moderate flavors, moderate mouthfeel.

Purchased this one in a beer store in northern France.

Good scotch ale, wee heavy. It's an oak aged beer with a rum finish.

A manly and delicious offereing from this Scottish brewery.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a dark hazy brown to black color with a level white one finger foamy head. Once it died off a bit, there’s a nice adequate somewhat foamy lacing. The smell had some sweet English malts with a sliding in and out oaky to somewhat nuttiness. The taste was basically the same with more of a pronounced nuttiness trying to invade my taste buds. On the palate, this one sat between sessionable and sipping quality. The carbonation finishes somewhat sweet and smooth. Overall, good English Strong stout that hides its ABV quite well.
