Very Good
Notes: This German wheat beer owes its lemony tartness to the addition of lactobacillus to the brew kettle. The resulting acidity balances the sweetness of malted wheat, resulting in a tart, refreshing, spritzy tipple that many a faithful wine lover has fallen for. Legend has it Napoleon’s troops, during their wars in Prussia, dubbed it the Champagne of the North. Santé and Prost!

Malt: White Wheat, Pilsen, Oats, Flaked Barley

Hops: Columbus, Amarillo

Yeast: Kettle soured Lactobacillus

The can looked intriguing, and I do like weisse beers. This one, however, is a sour, bitter mess. The citrus taste completely overwhelms the beer which, unlike the usual smoothness of a weisse is a too bitter. For $11.99 a sixer at my corner store, I feel ripped off. And I'm honestly not sure what others see in this beer.

Really tasty but very mild sour. A little one dimensional, but still a solid and refreshing beer. They also have a cucumber version, just in case you want to drink a beer that tastes like a pickle.

Appearance: A big head of foam tops the clear goldenstraw colored liquid; fizzles away quickly leaving very little lace

Smell: Lactic lemon and wheat bread tones

Taste: Lactic lemon and a hint of strawberry, up front, with the wheat tones underpinning; crisp and tart in the finish

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with moderate carbonation; slight puckering

Overall: A nice and refreshing example of the style; I would imagine this would be very popular in Austin at this time of year

On tap.

A - Pours a hazy light straw with a thin white head. Very minimal lace spots on the glass.

S - Funk and lemon.

T - Strong tartness up front followed by some yeasty breadiness and lemon flavor.

M - Thin and clean.

O - Excellent example of the style!!

Hazy and pale yellow in color with a white head that fades completely and quickly. Has an aroma of fresh malt and a squirt of lemon. Slightly tart in the aftertaste with a dash of salt thrown in for good measure. Light and fruity with some peel coating. No doubt but not as flavorful as had hoped, but overall not a bad go at this hip style.

Can in trade from blutt59, thanks for the opportunity! Brilliantly clear deep yellow with a good sized pillowy white head that persists. Orange, tangerine, lemon with a hint of light starch. Pretty tasty Berliner!

A: Pours a clear straw yellow color. At first a massive white head forms to over two fingers. That recedes quickly with no lace.
S: Big wheat and husky grains up front. Almost kind of a musky wheat aroma which I love. Tart lemon rind in the finish. Supper clean, and well done.
T: That husky wheat up front again, but a substantial acidic and tart bite. Tart lemon, and finishes a little sweet. Maybe some fruity and sweet honeydew in the finish that gives this a little bit of depth.
M/D: A light body with high carbonation. Supper crisp and clean. Incredibly easy and enjoyable to drink I have had this many times on tap, but just now getting a sixer of my own. There will be many more sixers to come. Perfect for the Texas heat.

This is really well done. Hands down the best I have had from Independence, and spot on for the style. Maybe a bit more acidic and tart than Boiler Room, which I am sure more people here will like. Next up a side by side with the two.

Poured from a 12oz can into a pint glass. Acquired as an extra in a trade.

Pours a hazy dull golden body with a small head that reduces very quickly to leave no retention or lacing.

Aromas are lactic, tart, wheaty, spices, citrus, malt. On the tongue is tart citrus, lactic tartness, a slight metallic mineral taste, salt, wheat, finish is dry. Mouthfeel is light, easy drinking, refreshing. Could throw back a few of these on a hot summer day.

Very gose-like. Overall very refreshing and easy to drink.

Pours a slightly hazy light yellow color with white fizzy head. Lemon citrus on the nose, a little tartness and funk too; follows onto the palate. Finishes tart and dry.

Red Bud

Served from a 12 ounce can into a snifter.

Pours fizzy and produces a light, airy pale white head. I thought the brew would be red for some reason but it's a slightly hazy golden color. Could be piss. But I'm gonna drink it. 4.25

Ooh that smells nice, but it definitely appears to have more hops than I'd expect. There's a mellow, pleasant melon meets dank weed aroma. Pretty damn lovely. Is that why they call it red bud? Ohhhhhhhhhh. Okay. Yeah. Smells like some good ass weed but with a tart, wheaty undertone. Wheaty and weedy. Okay. 4.5

It tastes much more tart than the nose lead me to believe and I still get the occasional dank weed flavor, so this is good. The finish is almost fruity, like a the tartest of berries. 4

It's mouth-puckering tart, so you can't just get housed drinking a bunch of these, or at least it wouldn't happen easily. But the beer is light and refreshing all the same. 4

A nice One. I wouldn't mind having steady summer access to this.

Pours a pale golden color with a finger width carbonated head that quickly dissipates. No lacing. Has a lemony tart aroma. Maybe somewhat salty. Has more of a wheat like and lemony tart taste. Very good bit of sourness. It is salty like a Gose. Light to medium bodied with quite a bit of carbonation. Good beer. Very surprised.

Worked thru a six pack of this in one night while swimming with the dogs. Great summer beer. Had this on tap last nite before heading home. Poured into a pint mug, light white minimum head on it. Very clear beer, really beautiful to look at. Smell is pretty funky, actually thought this ruined my silipint when I threw down the 6r because I left a little in it overnight. My wife actually tried this after smelling it, can't really believe that. Taste, it is a pucking lemon hit followed up by a fruity finish. So best to describe it is tart at first then smooth on the backend. My wife really liked this. Perhaps her favorite beer from all the hundreds that she has tried. I love this beer and actually feel privileged that I have access to all summer. Independence did a great job with this

Straw yellow pour, small head that dissipates to a ring quickly. Aroma is plenty of lemon zest, subtle fresh cut grass and cracker-like malt. Following the aroma well, the taste has a big burst of lemon zest, sight hints of Tajin seasoning and more lemon tartness in the back end. Overall a very solid summer drinker. This was suggested to me by an Austin bottle shop and I'm not disappointed.

Enjoyed this all summer, and hope that Independence brings it back next year. Even my wine loving wife enjoyed this on some hot Texas days. Its a nice example of the style that feels crisp and refreshing, leaves a nice lemony taste.

Great summer beer! A one finger head appeared on the pour that dissipated after about 45 seconds. This beer looks like straw or a day-old yellow powerade. It has a pungent lemon-tart smell that can be detected across a college dorm room (literally; my roommate commented on the tart smell). I also detect some haygrass or tart wine flavors.
This is a lemon bomb! If you let it play around in your mouth for a while the beer turns into a sour warhead. And it feels great on the pallett.
This is a great beer to sit and drink after a hot day doing chores outside. This beer would pair well with a pork stirfry, hot weather, and freshly cut grass.
