Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout from Independence brewing in Texas. Poured from 12oz bottle into my Silver Creek Brewing oversized snifter.

Dark brown colored ale with a cm of dark brown head. Disappeared quickly, leaving Jackson Pollack style lacing on the glass. Booyaa, art reference!

Smell is dominated by oatmeal + chocolate. Roasted malt takes a backseat but shows up in the end.

Normally I like my stouts to be on the viscous side. This ones a bit thin, but isn't detrimental to the taste. A pleasurable representation of an oatmeal stout.

Mild carbonation tickles the epiglottis. Bam, anatomy reference! Would reach for another, which says a lot about its staying power.

I'll take another,BA Texasclimber. A simple stout that possibly caught me off guard tonight. Good stuff from TX.

A:Dark black/brown in Color. Very thin head with no lace, carbonation was a bit low as is most of Independence offerings.

S: very coffee/chocolaty. Had some chocolate milk there as well. Sweet caramel notes. still a bit grainy/earthy as well.

T: tasted of coffee/toffee/chocolate malts. Very chocolate milky. Had a bit of sweetness and earthiness there as well.

M: Very creamy/smooth. Not very heavy for a stout but still nice. went down easy enough.

O: Something I will go back to in the future. very much exceeded what I had expected from Independence.

This is one of my staples...I love Independence Brewery and this is one of the better Texas stouts on the market in my opinion.

Poured into my DFH snifter, pours a pitch black motor oil color, but appears to be pretty medium bodied. A full off-white/tan head fills the glass and the recedes, leaving no lacing. Decent alcohol legs. Smell- dark chocolate, molasses, maybe some faint coffee. Taste- a roasty burnt bitter flavor at the back of the throat, rich carbonation, dark chocolate, and molasses. Mouthfeel- this one is fresh, has awesome thick and rich carbonation to it. Drinkability- for 8.5%, it is amazingly drinkable, with not much detected alcohol warmth. This is also 6$ for a 4 pack, which is an awesome price for a beer this good.

a - Pours a dark black color with an inch of tan head and light carbonation evident.

s - Smells of coffee, sweet chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, and dark fruit. Quite enjoyable.

t - Tastes of bitter chocolate, alcohol, cocoa, roasted malts, and coffee. A step down from the smell and heavy on the bitter chocolate and coffee.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Pretty smooth and creamy. I wish it was a little more carbonated.

d - A pretty drinkable oatmeal stout that is heavy on bitter chocolate in the taste. I enjoyed the smell but wish it had been more carbonated. Would be willing to try again.

Poured into my Fantome Tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a one finger tan head on top of a pitch black body. I love the way this beer looks!

Smell: Nice roasty smell, however it is overpowered by booziness.

Taste: I am getting to roast and some booze from the nose, however the booze is much more toned down in the taste, fortunately. I also get some nice bitterness and some chocolate notes.

Mouthfeel: While it i creamy which I like in this style, it is a little over carbonated which detracts a little.

Overall: Decent, didn't blow me out of the water but it was certainly solid.

Big thanks to twiggamortis420 for knocking off this want! Pours very dark brown, but completely impenetrable by light, with a small khaki head that left light wisps of lacing. Aroma has nice notes of roast and chocolate, a bit of coffee, and slight bitter aroma. Taste is right on par with the nose. Roast is in full supply, and pretty much dominates everything else, although it's not astringent nor bitter. There is a slight bitterness on the back end, but I would contribute it to the hops rather than roasted barley. Chocolate plays second fiddle to the roast, as it's very light, and there's also a touch of dark fruit/raisin peeking through, but only momentarily. Nice, full body, low carbonation, slick and smooth, with a bite of bitterness on the very dry finish. Overall, a really good oatmeal stout, although maybe I wold like just a touch more sweetness to balance out the strong roast. Good stuff. Thank again, Greg!

This bottle was sent in a recent trade. Thanks, Daniel! 12 ounce bottle poured into an imperial pint.

A: Convict Hill pours jet black, with little to no light shining through. Head is thick and tan, and slowly settles to a couple of millimeters, retaining quite well.

S: This brew has one of the most roasted barley aromas I have ever experienced. Coffee and dark chocolate are also prominent, with little hop aroma.

T: Wow! This beer has a lot going on! Full-on roasted barley character, with notes of dark fruit, coffee, and bitter chocolate. A touch of burnt toast character is present, with an edgy bitterness. Hops are only noticable in the finish, and lend a dry finish.

Notes: Convict Hill is one big-ass oatmeal stout! You don't drink this beer. You chew it. Full bodied, with robust flavor and yet, still manages to hide the alcohol. Silky mouthfeel and a dry finish balance it out in perfect harmony. This is one of my favorite oatmeal stouts to date, and with I had more.

Bought a 4 pack at HEB for 6.49....nice price for such a big beer.

Black as night pour...light brown, big head that stuck around for a while. Ring around the glass the entire time. Nice looking stout.

Quite a tasty smell. Cocoa hits first, then a bit of bitter, burnt coffee....some sweet malt as well. Fresh, enticing aroma.

That's good. Chocolate right off the bat, some bitter hops thrown in as well. Coffee and oatmeal a little more buried, but a very well rounded stout. Mouthfeel a bit thin, but quite smooth...goes down easy. Hides the 8.5 very well...dangerous!

A nice locally produced Oatmeal stout here in Austin. Good to see. Pick this baby up if you see it.

A - Pours a dark brown almost black color with a very thin coffee head. It disappears quickly leaving a nice thin rim around the glass.

S - A ton of oats and cocoa with some mild sweet sugary/caramel scents. Some very nice earth tones in there with a blast of malts as well.

T - A very nice chocolate malt flavor with some mild sweetness.

M - Feels almost too crisp on the finish in my opinion. When it first gets there it coats the tongue well but seems to fizzle at the end.

O - A solid stout. Smell by far is great in my opinion and the taste does not disappoint.

12 ounce bottle poured into an Efes tulip. Quick, beige head with clear, slippery lacing. Aroma includes coffee, roasted malt and maybe a touch of yoo-hoo. Interesting. Taste is deliciously smooth with no traces of alcohol. Some malt sweetness noted (yoo-hoo), light flavor of coffee. Tastes more like a milk stout. Either way, amazing for the high abv. Excellent.

Big thanks to lnashsig for sending this one. Poured into duvel tulip. The beer pours with about 1/2 inch of beautiful brown head with good lacing. The aroma is coffee, chocolate, and a bit of caramel sweetness. Really great start for this one. The flavors are great as well, although they are not quite as robust as they are in the aroma. The beer has a great creamy mouthfeel with a very fine quality to the carbonation. It is very pleasant to drink. I am a sucker for stouts and this one delivered.

So, again kudos aschwab for bringing this thing to Bogotá for me.

Now the convict hill wasn't what I expected but can take the claim it is even better. The bottling is deceitful because, whilst the bottle itself is very dark, one seemingly gets the feel the liquid within is clearer.

It's not- first thought as I started pouring it was "whoa, thick" because it literally looks like tar or car oil flowing, inactive, almost muddy just piling up in my american pint glass in which I tasted it. as it settles, the darkest head I've ever seen looks just as dormant as the underlying fluid, this is a brown-to-black head probably the colour you get from boiling soy sauce. it's extremely dark. and looks almost mousse-like, just stable and quiet, cakeish.

Smell is impressive. It's very sweet but has a balancing bitter feel at some point. I mean, this could easily fool you for a liquid brownie- I need say no more, because that's what this roasty chocolate deal is all about. fabulous smell, very very inviting for a stout. (ok maybe the bitter balance it has makes it rather like magic brownies and not so much your average...)

Taste is great. I'm a big sucker in this world for two things, the both of which this beer has:
1) A well handled sweetness. A beer can go all wrong here, but this thing is virtually a cacao melt with very clearly defined malts, nonetheless, and still a serious, balancing bitter and burnt aftertaste. It practically layers out through the tongue, and is complemented by a bigger than average (yet still mild enough to be an enhancer and not an overwhelm-er) alcohol feel on the palate & nose as you sip it.
2) A coherent smell-taste correlation. I tell ya, when a beer smells sweet and you suddenly hit a taste brick wall with super dry malts, I get a bit pissed. Not here, no sir. The smell is a prelude and heck, maybe an abstract on the beer itself. you know what you're about to indulge in (read above) and you'll love it.

And the mouthfeel? It's thick and oozy, but not as bad as its visual statement suggests. In fact, it can be a fair companion in warmer climates, because it is still reasonably dry if sipped cold, or boozed enough to hit you in winter.

For someone not so big on stouts, I have to say this is the second stout that has blown my mind in the past year (heck even exactly one year after the first, the DFH-WWS), and for my first (or among the first) texan beer, I certainly will hunt this treat down in the lone star state or beyond its borders because, I tell ya, it's worthwhile.

A - black, no head, slightly unremarkable

S - chocolate and dark caramel malts; a bit subtle

T - lots of dark chocolate, coffee, leather with an enduring bitterness. Missing a bit of balance.

M - fairly light with little to no carbonation. Coats the mouth slightly.

D - fairly drinkable but the bitternes

Picked up a single from Whole Foods. It's basically a big roasty stout with a mild oatmeal edge. It's not overly thick and you could easily mistake it for a ~6% beer. There's a classic malty dark chocolate and java taste with a little dark bread crust taste and sweetness. Not a bad for a winter day, but also not a standout stout.

A - dark body, no light coming through, medium dark brown head things quickly to a ring.

S - chocolate, light bitter coffee, sweet malts and oatmeal.

T - Definitely oatmeal, bitter coffee, hints of chocolate. rawhide, dryness. a touch of booze.

M - quite smooth, and relatively full-bodied.

D - well, it's ok, but surprisingly hot.

Thanks to duff247. 12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a pitch black color with a huge, brown, creamy head. Head is about 2 and half fingers and takes long time to settle down, eventually becoming a half finger tan head about half way though. Foamy lacing covers the glass at first and then slowly slides back down to meet the head.

Nose is a good mix of chocolate, some coffee and a roasted character. Not really all that strong but the aromas are there. There is definitely an underlying sweetness to it as well.

Some milk chocolate leads the way in the taste and it's quickly followed by strong roasted, probably even charred, notes. Perhaps a bit of black licorice is present. Bitter through the middle of each sip with some coffee at the finish, which is pretty dry and crisp.

Medium/thick body with higher carbonation for the style. The carbonation actually feels pretty lively on the tongue. Not sure if it's really that highly carbonated or if it just seems that way because I'm used to a lower carbonation from the style. The mouthfeel wants to be rich, creamy and smooth but the higher carbonation and dry finish prevent it from getting all the way there.

Drinkability is pretty good here. It's a slightly different take on an oatmeal stout, nothing too out there, but a bit different nonetheless. Definitely an enjoyable beer that I'd like to see again.

A really good oatmeal stout!! One of the best that I've had.

Super smooth, very oatmeal and coffee tastes, flavor really resides for a long time. For an extra, a really good beer. Not a whole lot of different flavors, but does what its name says very well.

Pour was pleasantly thick, black, with a nice finger of light brown head that laces well.

Aroma is decent, bits of chocolate, a hint of espresso, roasted malts.

Creamy oatmeal, dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, a dab of toffee and booze.

Feel is upper medium in body, but still sits heavy enough. Creamy texture, minimal coating and a cleaner finish. Carbonation is good.

Overall drinkability is good. A nice and tasty stout, slightly filling, but multiples wouldn't be too hard to put away.

12oz bottle.

Bottle nearly explodes upon opening and yields a gusher with dark tan bubbles streaming out of the bottle. Body is almost completely black and the enormous head finally settles done leaving good lacing.

Aroma is dark chocolate, cocoa powder and a ton of bubbles that fizz in the nose. Bit of coffee and oatmeal.

The taste is also very sweet with cocoa and oatmeal up front with a chalky dark chocolate texture.

The mouthfeel is crazy, crazy carbonated with tons of bubbles and medium bodied...i think, because the amount of bubbles makes it seem lighter than air.

This beer is certainly over carbonated and i was worried it might be infected, but i didn't really get an infection. That said, the carbonation is distracting and takes away from the beer a bit.

12 oz. bottle tried 22 Aug 2010. Poured in the 0.5 L Adambrau becker.

Thick tight large brown head, the color of the leftover milk at the end of a bowl of Cocoa Puffs. Well carbonated. Beer is opaque black. Aromas of coffee and chocolate chip cookies. Lightly sweet, but much drier than the aroma would suggest. Bittersweet chocolate and mocha. Roasty coffee and dark grains throughout. Some ethanol burn in the finish. Medium body, slick mouthfeel.

Not as much oatmeal presence as I would like but still decent.

Acquired in a trade from duff247.

Pours a very dark colored rich creamy 1+ finger head that fades semi slowly with lacing, over pitch black beer.

Nose is loaded with roasted malts, oatmeal, creamy milk chocolate, dark caramel malts, a bit of black patent malt, toffee, bitter roast, a little coffee, and essence of pure darkness.

Taste brings plenty of roast, some coffee and toffee with that, some black patent malt, a very light malted milk ball, come creamy oatmeal but a little less oatmeal than I expected, rich and creamy, heavy and dark, a bit pillowy, very slight boozy taste, a bit of cocoa powder. Finishes with some bitterness, a bit of a tropical fruit flavor (?), some cocoa, some coffee and roast, fairly sticky and mouth coating, but semi dry. Also a slight chalky dry bready taste.

Mouth is fairly thick, fairly creamy and rich, with decent carbonation and a bit of warming booze.

Drink is OK, some warming booze, the sticky finish and mouth coating makes it a little tougher, and just the heavy beer feel, but otherwise not bad.

Poured from a 12oz. glass bottle into a pint glass.

A - Black, virtually no light sneaking through. Formed a rather small tan head that dissipated after a minute or two.
S - Coffee, dark chocolate, and roasted malt. Fairly typical stout fare, maybe a bit sweeter than average.
T - Coffee and chocolate, with a smooth sweet nuttiness in the background. Strong roast profile.
M - Thick bodied and fairly sticky. Quite chewy and pleasant.
D - This is one of the most in-your-face oatmeal stouts I've had. However, it lacks some of the outright oaty uniqueness of other oatmeal stouts (say, Samuel Smith's). It's still a great, if big, brew.

Many thanks to lnashsig for this one. Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Deep seal brown liquid, thoroughly opaque with a thin dark camel ring of creamy foam. Sandy lacing subsides in arcs dancing around the clear panes of viscous tears. Great retention. A swirl brings the head back up though it lightens in color.

Roasted grain, oatmeal (rather than oats!), faint brown sugar, and perhaps a hint of diacetyl in the nose (faintly buttery but that can work for this style).

Dark roast malt yields a rich lasting flavor with some hints of coffee and a touch of cocoa emerges as the beer warms up. Faint char adds a bitter not mid-palate which leads into a dry crisp finish. Smooth vaguely nutty/oaty aftertaste. Very light esters and perhaps a hint of licorice or fennel are in the margins of the profile.

Medium-full bodied, lightly creamy, and well carbonated mouthfeel. Lightly astringent from the roast malt.

Quite drinkable thanks to the balance of flavors. Best served lightly chilled, this makes a great "breakfast stout" even without the direct addition of coffee.

Appearance:

Very low hissing noise as I popped the cap. On the pour this baby comes out jet black with some dark dark brown hues around the edge of my glass. I was left with a beautiful one finger thick dark cocoa colored head that quickly faded away. When I hold my glass up to the light there is absolutely no light passing through and appears to be very clear with no sediment. As I gave a slight swirl there was a decent amount of lacing but nothing very thin.

Smell:

Lots of chocolate, roast, coffee, and malty sweetness that is followed by some scorched brown sugar. I am not getting any form of hop presence here, just some nutty undertones. Maybe hot chocolate ? Vanilla ?

Taste:

Just like a chocolate milkshake, super smooth and velvet like. The coffee and vanilla blend very well in this situation, not making it overly sweet. There is absolutely no bitterness or heat alcohol presence. I could see myself having this with some eggs and bacon for breakfast.

Mouthfeel:

Medium, very drinkable and not overly sweet and non noticeable alcohol which amps up its smoothness.

Appearance: Pours a viscous black with a very dark mocha head. Foam retention is above average.

Smell: A pleasent roastiness with sweet, dark caramel and chocolate. Notes of vanilla, coffee, and smoke.

Taste/Mouthfeel: A lot of milk chocolate and creamy caramel mixed with creamy espresso. Mouthfeel is super creamy and kinda remindes me of a creamy coffee drink.

Drinkability: A very easy drinking imperial stout. Would love to have more of this.
