While staying in the area over the holidays, I stopped in to pick up some local beers. The store is located in a small strip mall so plenty of easy parking here. The store overall is nicely laid out, very clean, but focuses on wine. In the back of the store there are several glass front refridgerators that contain a decent beer selection.

There were a several local CT beers here from City Steam, Beaver Beer, Thomas Hooker, and Cavalry. There was also a selection of national distributed micros to allow anyone to pick up something that will satisfy.

The gentleman working politely asked if I needed any help when I entered the store, and we had a brief discussion on some of the CT beers.

Overall the place does not have a huge beer selection, but what they do have makes it worthy of a visit when in the area.

Pretty good place with a nice selection of craft brews. Was one of the first places that really got me into craft beer. Prices are ok, but some of the bomber prices are a joke. For example, a bottle of Molotov Cocktail Single Simcoe Hop Edition that goes for $6.99 at many places, maybe $7.99 if they're on the high side, goes for $12.99 here. Ummm... ok? Not really sure what the strategy is there.

Nutmeg is o k, but I've recently discovered a place a mile down the road that is unbelievable as far as its selection in an unassuming store- Spirit Shop, also on Watertown Ave just past Frankies. I was absolutely shocked at their beer selection since they haven't really shown up on my radar on this site or anywhere else, and their prices for pretty much everything (even liquor etc) are as low as I've seen. If you're in the area you *have* to check it out.

If you live in Waterbury this is most definitely the best place around if you are a beer lover. While the selection is a bit smaller than what you would find in Mountview down in Naugatuck, I think Nutmeg is more reasonably priced and they do have some beers that Mountview does not. The owner is very friendly and there is a clerk there who is extremely knowledgeable on beers. Everyone I talked to wether it was staff or customers were very friendly and I highly recommend this place to anyone in the Waterbury/Watertown area.

One of my favorite package stores to visit in Waterbury, Valley Discount Wine & Liqour has one of the best selections in the state, if not THE best. Tons of different beers to choose from, including rarities and stuff you would never expect to find in your traditional mom and pop packies. There is a gentlemen in there with that is very helpful, I was looking for a good Fall selection to try and he was very helpful in finding me a good style to try. They also have bottles on hand for you to try which is rare to see at a liqour store. Their selection of wine and hard alcohol is top notch as well, many to choose from and again the service is exceptional. But the best aspect of Valley is their selection of beer, the whole back wall is one stretched cooler filled with beer you can't find anywhere else. Valley has done a great job with their selection and their service, prices are beyond reasonable, and the beer is always fresh. What's also nice is if they don't have a certain thing your looking for, they will get it for you within a week which is great! Highly recommended!

I find that many "package/liquor stores are becoming more keen on the micro/imported beer options. So there are a number of decent places to stock up on good beer in Watertown, Waterbury and Naugutuck these days I'm happy to say. Mountview Plaza in Naugatuck remains the premier outlet, possibly in the state. But Valley Discount has really done a very credible job over the past few years and seems to be the best option in Waterbury. They are always friendly and offering assistance for beers or wines. The selection is more than solid with a growing number of micros and lots of nice imports, particularly German brands including a decent number of mini-kegs. It's a good sized store, there are tastings available pretty often, and they will order special requests for you. They seem to work hard for your business and beer lovers will find lots of good choices.

Not a bad stop at all if you're in the 'bury. There's really no alternative I can think of. There is a pretty good selection of sixes of American microbrews and foreign sixes and singles. Lot's of bombers and 750s too. Basically one large isle and a long cooler.
A few that I saw : Affligem, Delerium , Chimay, Duvel , Ommegang,Allagash,
Lagunitas, Weyerbacher, Black Boss , Ayinger, ...lot's of others that I just can't remember, but suffice to say that for Waterbury, this is THE beer stop. There's also a good selection of wines.
The person at the desk asked me if I needed help...seemed friendly enough.

A ver nice surprise from my hometown. Usually Waterbury seems like a dirth of a town for beer drinkers, but here is a gem in the muck.

Coolers are along the back wall. The warm singles are on a shelf facing the cooler. Makes it nicely convienent to compare warm and cold selection. Nice mix of domestic and imports include Rouge, Boulder, J.W. Lees, Young & Co., Allagash, and many more.

A staff member was quick to approach and ask me if he could help with anything. I asked for DFH 90, but was informed they were out. He quickly offered a few options in the same style. After he was finished offering similar beers, he also mentioned they had a few new products with open bottles that they were offering as samples.

A fantastic place to get a great product in a town where there is an overabundance of BMC drinkers and an industry that supports them. Definitly my new store to shop in Waterbury.

"H" and his wife run this store; they love wine and will talk to you, let you try on fridays and saturdays, and recommend anything.

They love beer too. "H's wife showed me a bottle of a limited edition beer and said, "this is the last one, its mine" and would't sell it. Thats special. I respect that. They have bought cases of belgians that I have liked; for me to buy one at a time; The selection is really great for the area, mostly cold. Lots of Germans and Belgians, and a particular interest in getting seasonals , micro seasonals, and Oktoberfests and an uncanny way of picking only decent stuff.

We have to fight the notion that beer should cost the same everywhere. Its like gas; but opposite, cheaper near the highway and in my towm; I will pay a buck more for the selection and the effort.
