18oz pint at Earls Whitemud in south Edmonton, they of the pushy bartendresses even in the middle of the bloody afternoon. No matter.
This beer appears a slightly hazy, medium copper amber colour, with one skinny-ass finger of wispy and barely bubbly dirty white head, which leaves an uneven string of mitochondrial lace around the glass as things gently subside.
It smells of grainy, lightly bready caramel malt, orange and white grapefruit pith, a further candied lemon fruitiness, mild yeasty notes, and more leafy, floral, and piney hop bitters. The taste is rather nougaty caramel malt, a bit of biscuity toffee, muddled sweet citrus, and more leafy, weedy, and neutered piney hoppiness.
The bubbles are adequate in their supportive and sometimes playful frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and mostly smooth, with a wee airy creaminess arising over the interstitial spell here. It finishes well off-dry, the base malt showing some serious lingering chops.
Once again, good to see a proper, if quickly growing craft brewery getting the contract to brew the house offerings in joints such as these in Western Canada. Not the most complex or hoppy pale ale around, but agreeable enough for the range of trendy (I imagine) food that they serve in this particular establishment.
