Copper and slightly hazy, with very little carbonation and a finger of off white head.

Smells of caramel, fresh plums, a little pine and cayenne.

Tastes very caramel forward, with a big, dull bitter character, oranges and orange rind.

Medium body, with a little, foamy carbonation.

Got this in Scarborough, drinking in Muskoka, Feb 9th, 2018.

Review #7 from the Across the nation 12 pack
Pours a medium orange with a beige head. Lots of lacing. Subside to a ring after a few minutes.
Lovely smell of flowery hops and honey .
Very nice balance of malts, expressive western hops citrus flavors ( grapefruit )
Very well made Western IPA. Lots of flavor not overly bitter but has some bite. A bit of alcohol feel some malty sweetness and nice carbonation.
Well made would buy again. Taste improves as beer warms up.

330 mL bottle from the LCBO; the third of six bottles included in their "Across the Nation Collaboration (West)" mixed pack. Dated Apr 3 2017 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a relatively clear brassy golden colour, capped with nearly two fingers of foamy white head that gradually recede down to a soapy froth and generously-proportioned collar. This erosion requires the better part of ten minutes to carry itself out, coating the interior of the glass with a beautiful layer of lacing in the process. Very nice aroma; I'm getting bergamot orange and Earl Grey tea on the nose, with a strong undercurrent of pine resin, grapefruit, pineapple and cantaloupe. The malts aren't completely drowned out, offering up subtler hints of caramel and biscuit.

Not bad; the flavour profile incorporates a strong malt backing, which ensures the presence of both a firm, bready backbone and a prominent caramel sweetness. Suggestions of apricot, grapefruit pith and melon are slightly noticeable by mid-sip. The finish is bitter, featuring intense pine resin and hints of black tea; both flavours carry on into the persistent aftertaste, along with some pithy pink grapefruit astringency. Medium in body, with low carbonation levels that weakly agitate the tongue; it feels smooth and slick on the palate. I don't expect experienced hopheads to have much trouble knocking this one back, but the resiny bitterness might be a bit much for someone unaccustomed to the style.

Final Grade: 3.83, a B+. Left of the Divide claims to be a true West Coast IPA, and I can't really argue with that. It's relatively well-balanced for the style - the bitterness dominates, but its sturdy malt backing prevents the brew from being too one-dimensional. Given that this is a three-month old IPA that has been shipped across the country, it's difficult for me to definitively say whether or not it's a great IPA that is not in peak condition, or merely a middling one to begin with. For now I'd call this middle-tier by Ontario IPA standards - I'd drink it again, but wouldn't go out of my way for more.

Bottle: Poured a dark amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and minimal retention. Aroma of citrus and resin hops notes with light dry caramel notes. Taste is a mix of dry citrusy and resin hops notes with some bitterness discernable. Body is above average with good carbonation. Not bad but a bit short on hops character.

Bottle 4 of the Central City collab pack Across the Nation. A true BC Collab with Four Winds this time. Bottle served cold into a pint glass.

Appearance - Rich bronze colored beer topped with a finger of soft looking tan head. Great clarity and minimal visible carbonation.

Smell - Loads of grapefruit with some earthy dankness. Some very sweet fruit as well, possibly some combination of lychee and overripe mango. Not usually a combo a like with my IPA's but the nose here is pretty good.

Taste - Earthy bitterness, lots of grapefruit and pith, lacking sweetness that did show up on the nose. Maybe a subtle suggestion of mango in there, but hidden by the earthiness.

Mouthfeel - A bit thin bodied for me, carbonation not quite expressive enough and a little sticky on the close anyway. Moderately drying finish.

Overall - not a bad beer... but probably my least favorite of the mix-six collaboration beers so far. The earthy mango, lychee and grapefruit doesn't usually do it for me and while I thought the aroma was quite good, the flavor wasn't a fave.
