Formerly: Red Racer Classic Pale Ale
Hand-crafted using Mariss Otter barley from England and hops from Washington’s Yakima valley. This big bold pale ale has a citrus aroma and a full malt body giving it a distinctive character designed to inspire the beer connoisseur in all of us.

355ml can, another from the 2010 Central City summer mixed pack, courtesy of the Merrit, BC guv'ment store.
This beer pours a mildly hazy copper amber hue, with three fingers of rather puffy, foamy, and rocky white head, which leaves some layered, patchy, and streaky lace around the glass as things slowly drop away.
It smells of gritty grapefruit and orange rind, pine resin, biscuity, bready caramel malt, lightly tannic tea, and a further suggestion of muddled tropical fruit. The taste is more malty up front, the biscuity, grainy caramel malt holding sway, until the mildly acerbic pine needle, leafy, and blended domestic (for BC, that is) citrus hops come smugly crashing back through the door. There does still seem to be a bit of that musty tea essence from the aroma, as well.
The carbonation is moderate, bobbing up and down in its playful frothiness, the body on the light side of medium weight, and low-grade smooth, the tanginess of the hops kind of spoiling the party here. It finishes off-dry, the fruitiness of the malt and hops aiding and abetting the cause, crisp, and surprisingly peppery, almost evoking a conflict of ideals, for some reason.
A nicely rendered, hoppy, but not overly so, American pale ale, the old world malt doing well to provide at least the semblance of balance. Despite a few minor hiccups to the contrary, no one will mistake this for an IPA, at least if they are familiar with its more (in)famous big brother. Worthy of a try for its own merits, however.

Clear amber with a thick soapy head. Floral, pine, sweet citrus on nose. Light-medium malt body with a distinct pine resin finish. Very crisp. Yum.

Look: Clear dark red-straw color. Short head collapsed into small bubbles in a minute, but left a thin skiff across the surface. Slight lacing left on the side of the glass with much smaller bubbles than the head. Only small bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass.
Smell: Light fruit scents with a bit of malt underneath. Swirling the glass kicked up a funky yeasty scent.
Taste: Medium level bitters with some mild mixed fruit flavors. Malts join in after a few seconds. The bitters take over again for the aftertaste.
Feel: A little bit of tongue tingling effervescence as it turns into a small to medium sized bubble foam. Has a creamy feel only for a couple of seconds.
Overall: Very near to an IPA in overall flavor profile, but with a lower bitterness level than most IPAs. Quite refreshing.

355ml can poured into tulip.
Pours a clear honey amber with one skinny finger of white head that leaves marching inchworm lace as it recedes.
Smells of brown bread, fresh pine needles, orange rind, stone fruit, grapefruit zest and softly resiny hops.
Tastes of more bready caramel malt, citrus and pine. Peach, melon, lemon rind and more pleasantly dank piney hops.
Feels soft and creamy. Medium bodied with gently supportive carbonation. Finishes dry.
Verdict: Highly recommended. One of the best in Canada.
