This beer, brewed by Victor Gonazalez, won Barley's 2008 homebrewing competition. Barley's brewed a bit and has it available (for the moment).
Appearance: It pours a very hazy, dark amber color with an off white, one and a half fingered head. Head was a little quick to dissipate and left a light lacing on the glass. Perhaps the alcohol content was too much for it. I'm not sure how high it is.
Smell: This is fine smelling DIPA. Loads of citrus grapefruit, pineapple, and mango kick it off. It's very citrusy and sweet smelling. Hops are piney and plentiful. In terms of the hop profile, it's mostly hoppy and citric. Not much of a floral quality going on here. Malts are present, but appear to be right in line with my preference. Doesn't smell very balanced. Kudos to you, Mr. Gonzalez. No alcohol is noted. All in all, the nose is damn good.
Taste: Very impressive. Citrus flavors are sweet and a little bitter. The blend very well with the strong, piney hops. Again, this is definitely skewed toward the piney, bitter side in terms of hops. There is a little maltiness going on, but not nearly enough to balance it out. I like that aspect of this beer a lot. It's not quite palate crushing, but it's very bitter and appetizing. Finishes sweet and bitter. Again, no alcohol noted.
Mouthfeel/Drinkability: It's medium bodied, bordering on full. Carbonation is spot on and it's extremely smooth. Drinkability is likewise very good. Perhaps if I knew the alcohol content, I might bump it down a notch. But, I don't, it's very tasty, and I'm knocking off an entire growler by myself tonight. That should illustrate its drinkability perfectly.
I'm really impressed with this fine beer. Mr. Gonalez, sir, you outdid yourself with this one and truly deserve all the praise that comes your way. There's really no constructive criticism I can send your way. This is really an excellent beer. Too bad Barley's won't have it regularly. Mr. Gonalez, that was your cue to go open a brewpub...immediately.
