Bomber from Bert’s. A tangy amber ale, some sweet malts, some bitter hoppiness. Clear caramel / orange color, small creamy beige head. Aroma is mostly hops, sweet malt taste follows, finish is mild bitterness.

Weird that this slightly heavy ale is their summer seasonal, according to their page.

Not red so much as a copper. Smells piney, woody, with a faint toasty malt sweetness.

As copper as she is, not a whole lot of sweetness present in tasting it- we have a mixture of resinous pine and spicy Tettnanger. Feels a little heavy, but surprisingly crisp for its abv and color.

This is a particularly beautiful shade of coppery amber. Nice lacing with a clear white foam. Plenty of spritziness in the mouth. Orange marmalade aroma with piney hops.

Both malty and hoppy flavors vie for supremacy here. Sweet with a peppery touch. The malt is quite rich with a caramel base. There are a lot of malt flavors going on. An orangey citrus taste with some woody notes. Hints of melon with that sweet malty taste. This is rather bitter with an acidic touch at the finish.

This starts to seem overly bitter, but the malty sweetness is quite beguiling. I think it's better than a lot of other Red/Amber brews. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Central Market - Shoreline in north Seattle.

Nice looking pour. A hazy amber color with a pillowy head. Long lasting bubbles leave moderate lacing.

The label on the bottle says that the IRA is "inspired by the IPA category." Sure enough, the smell like a trusty Northwest IPA dominated by citric and piney hops. Very little malt aroma is discernible, just a faint sweetness that doesn't come from the hops.

Flavors and feel are just like many of the good IPAs to be found around Oregon brewers. Mild are hoppy with just a little malty sweetness. Not much backbone but nothing offensive. I was expecting more substantial flavors with the substantial look. In fact, I cannot taste anything differentiating it from an IPA. Medium body and short-ish finish don't end up leaving a lasting impression for me.

Overall, it's a middle of the pack IPA with a nice red look in my opinion. I would have liked the flavors differentiate it some from its paler brethren. Most brewers would just call this in IPA in fact. Next I'm I'll reach for a true IPA or amber.

Appearance- Pours up about a finger's worth of head that has a little retention. The head is pure cotton white while the body is a dark amber that glows a mostly medium, but a little pale, amber when held up to the light. Thin sliver of sheeting is left around the surface of the beer.

Nose- This is a odd one. Starts off with some traditional IPA notes- grapefruit, melon, with some muskiness- but then veers off course. Some notes of banana. Then a mixture of cherry, strawberry, raisin- some kind of red fruit with a spice or piquancy to it. Then it moves into weak tea and hints of caramel. Very odd. Not bad, just don't know what to think of it. No that I think of it, more berry than those other fruits. Raspberry is probably the closest. Caramel grows.

Taste- Starts off a little thin. A little too thin, in fact. Some tea which seems to hint at pine and resin, some other woodiness. Slight notes of orange which move into caramel and more tea (more of a black tea with some green aspects). Moves back into pine and resin, with some slight spice on the finish. The spice lingers a bit as well with a tiny bit of heat. Not bad but really weird. Caramel with slight citrus notes start to move forward a bit and matchstick notes appear on the finish. I was thinking the odd flavors were a result of age but if I'm reading the bottle code correctly, this was bottled on 8/20/13. If you're not trying to pay attention the flavor profile, it becomes very mellow. I would say that it lacks a little bit of presence but is till quite drinkable. Definitely above average, not quite good.

Mouthfeel- A little more than light bodied with a fair amount of zip that seems to fit well with the overall character of the beer.

Drinkability- Easygoing but a little too easy to ignore to really compel one to drink it. Reasonable price but there are many better beers for that reasonable price.

Overall- Not bad, but not particularly memorable. I'd give it a shot: it's an okay beer in a vaguely defined style. Even then, it still seems a little off to me. For the amount of IBUs and the claim that it was a red IPA, it seemed to come short.
