Was surprised to see that this establishment had not yet been added to the beerfly guide, so I decided to go check it out with my wife and see whether it was guide worthy.
I had a hell of a time finding parking near the resto/bar, and at one point gave my wife the ''if we don't find parking soon, we're bailing on this place'' look. She reasoned me into being patient. We entered the Fûtenbulle and found a nearly deserted dining area and bar. Too early in the evening for the mainly college crowd which frequents the place. This was a good thing in my opinion... I needed some quiet time away from home.
The waiter/barman promptly brought us menus and I immediately opened mine to the beer selection, having just had dinner at home. About 100 different entries on a very poorly organized selection of beers. I thought it especially funny to find Delirium Tremens in the Belgian Wit section called ''Les Blanches'' on their menu. You will find most 1st generation Quebec Micros and most of what SAQ and private houses import. For the neophyte this is more beer than he/she knows to do with. For the local beergeek this is somewhat déja-vue. I finally dropped my 5er on their house amber called la Fûtenbulle Rousse. This is brewed locally by a contract brewer called La brasserie du Vieux Montréal who only do their beers on tap for local outlets looking for a house beer. Very drinkable beer but not outstanding.
Although we did not eat anything, I still disected the menu to find something for virtually any craving. Burgers, moules, pizzas, pasta, grilled fare... the list goes on and on. Very complete menu as far as food goes, and it seemed to please the patrons who had chosen to eat and drink instead.
If you are looking to have a superior dining experience accompanied by fine brews in a sumptuous décor, then go to Fourquet Fourchette or Bières & Compagnie on St-Laurent. Le Fûtenbulle hasn't got the ''wow'' factor and is too far behind in beer appreciation.
