22 fl oz bottle sealed with pressure cap and red wax. Vintage 2014

poured into TG snifter.

Thanks for the share duff27! Wanted to try this beer for a long time!

Appearance: murky brown bodied beer with thick and creamy khaki colored head. Heavy lacing on the glass.

Smell: hop forward and rich malt profile. Dark fruits, caramel, and toffee. Nice balance between the hops and malt profile.

Taste: hop forward with same malt profile as the aroma. Strikes a nice balance that is slight more hoppy. Citrusy hops and dark fruit, caramel, and toffee malts. Finishes with a moderate bitterness that lingers for a while.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with low carbonation. Awesome chewy mouthfeel with creamy carbonation. When this beer is chilled there is no booze, but as it warms up it has a slight booze sting. Exceptional mouthfeel; exactly how you want a barleywine to feel on the palate.

Overall: This is a pretty good american barleywine. It is pretty solid fresh and I think it will improve with age as the hops fade. World class mouthfeel on this beer and pretty exceptional for a non barrel aged american barleywine.

2013 vintage (purple wax) split 3 1/2 ways. Sweet, hoppy, and less alcohol heat than what I expected. Primarily has notes of smooth brown sugar and caramel, balanced with a nice usage of hops. Medium-mouthfeel. Extremely easy to drink given the abv and style, this is truly a triumph of a beer. Best non barrel-aged barleywine out there by far. I've had my fair share of barleywines, in all honesty I enjoyed this far more than I did a deal with the devil or mother of all storms. The only barleywine I hold in equsl regard is Sucaba, do yourself a favor and hunt for this beer, impossible to be disappointed if you're a fan of the style.

2006 bottle from @treyliff, thanks buddy!

Look: Nice dark amber, some expected sediment from a 9 year old beer.

Smell: Dried fruit, roasted malt, no hops at all, slight oxidation, caramel.

Taste: First flavor is dried fruit and roasted malt, on par with the nose. Then, a wash of caramel and marshmallow, a bit of soy sauce and light sweetness followed by an intense burnt sugar flavor. The best way I can describe it the aftertaste of a really good chewy caramel. I've never experienced that flavor before in a beer, but maaaan it was amazing. No hop presence.

Feel: Appropriate amount of carbonation, not syrupy but not light either, just the right mouthfeel for a Barleywine.

Overall: I have a thing for Barleywines, and the 9 years of aging made this a superior beer. It tasted like drinking a beer that was brewed with tons of burnt sugar, in a good way. I wish I could have this beer again, but I know that it's probably never going to happen and it makes me sad.

I have had the 2015 version as well, which was definitely a good beer, but a bit of aging turned Gratitude into something magical.

If you can get a 2006 and you like Barleywines do you yourself a favor and get it before they become impossible to find. Superb beer.

wow, no review of gratitude...I feel like I shouldn't post this of the new vintage since last yr we did the full vertical and I have notes from that tasting...will post them when I get around to it.

this is new vintage, side by side w BA

both are identical cept the regular has a nice frothy head that the BA don't got. nose is phenomenal. toffee abd caramel. taste I'd great but a bit young. candy, fruit, caramel, a bit of great by super drinkable. still far and away my fav non BA barley. this could use some mellowing.

2009 vintage, obtained some time ago in trade (thanks to whoever this was from). Poured into my Dogfish Head oversized snifter.

Clear carmine body with amaranth highlights and a lasting smattering of beige foam. Sandy delicate lacing, and faint sticky legs. Good retention, especially for the age and ABV.

Boozy aromatics waft up from the bottle the moment I free the cap from its waxen grave. Dark fruit, wet leather, hints of sherry-like oxidation, burnt sugar, and some faint floral hop odors join the fray in the glass.

Intense flavor obliterates the palate - mountains of sweetness balanced by a cutting wave of bitterness (though the hop flavors are largely diminished by now) and a hint of sherry-vinegar tartness. Earthy, grassy, and somewhat spicy finish never quite dries out. Alcohol contributes big flavor and a bit of heat without being excessive.

Brisk well carbonated and medium-heavy bodied without being oily or sticky.

Impressive and powerful barleywine, glad I aged it though the fundamental muscular character isn't going to ever age out of this beer. While not as complex as I expected, this is s perfect after-dinner treat on a winter day...that said, a little goes a long way.

It is time I put a review down for this. After many vintages, and just recently having the 2013 release...this is a great barleywine.

A: Pours a dark copper orange color. A one finger beige head rises and sticks around for a bit. Light lace is left as this recedes.
S: Toasted malts, burnt sugars, caramel. Baked bread, chocolate. Slightly piney hops in the finish. Incredibly warming and inviting.
T: Like the nose a huge malty character. Toasted malts, baked bread, burnt caramel sugars. Maybe some dark fruits and chocolate comes next. That finishes with a slightly spicy, piney hop bite.
M/D: A full body and moderate carbonation. Smooth and velvety. A great slow and warming sipper to hug all night. I love it.

One of my favorite barleywines. It actually reminds me a lot of aged Real Ale Sisyphus (which is a criminally underrated barelywine in Texas). Always a treat to drink, and I am glad I have had the chance to try it on many different occasions.

2013 vintage (violet wax) poured into my Great Lakes 25th Anniversary hybrid tulip...

A. Pours an extremely sexy copper with bit of summery haze. Head is robust. About two fingers of light khaki head that settles to a half finger. The suds are thick, creamy, leaving a consistent, tight coating along the glass. One of the prettier and creamier heads I've seen in some time. Beautiful beer.

S. Brown sugar, molasses, cherry, orange zest, burnt caramel. Hops notes are there...slightly citrusy and piney...but faint. This is a highly refined nose for an American Barleywine...the fruit and caramelized sugar is most apparent, while hops take a back seat. Smells like a hearty, thick, loaf of nut bread. Really nice.

T. Opens with cherry, grape, caramel, and brown sugar. Then notes of toffee and hints of pine. Finish is a toasted caramel sweetness tempered with drying hops. Wow.

M. Carb is light-moderate and the body is full, complex, and very creamy. It's on the sweeter side, but what a showcase in malt. It has a thickish mouthfeel, with big biscuit and toasted dough notes blended with stone fruits.

O. One of the best American Barleywines I have had. Easily the best non-barrel aged example of the style. An excellent balance of sweetness, drying hops, and booze. Amazing mouthfeel. Very complex and worthy of its praise. Outstanding.

P.S. The bottle presentation is the best I've ever seen. Truly a work of art. Sorry to see they won't be packaging it like this anymore, but happy to have a few vintages in my cellar to admire and enjoy.

Slaying a personal whale. Split with angrybabboon. 2013 vintage.

Appearance: Ruddy dark copper. Head is dirty-white/pale tan, bubbly, creamy and dense. Sticky notches of lacing. Moderate carbonation.

Smell: Mega malty. Deeply cooked and caramelized malts. Bready and then some. Biscuit with a touch of graham cracker. Sharp bite of alcohol with caramel, brown sugar, and a ton of toffee. Some pine and citrus hops layered over the top. Decently fruity with apple, pear, and some deeper almost jammy sweetness. Slight alcohol spicy esters. A ton of sweet malts. Bready, cooked, and caramelized in abundance. Slight toasted element with some minor roasted malts as well.

Taste: Cooked and crazy caramelized malt. Some molasses, a ton of caramel, a load of toffee. Graham cracker and a ton of raw biscuit dough. Sweet and boozy. Bit of alcohol on the back with some spicy alcohol esters. Some orange peel and marmalade as well. A touch of mint along with some solid pine needle bitterness and a solid smack of grapefruit. Hoppy, sweet, and boozy. Slightly roasted with a toasted undercurrent. Toast and the gamut of sugar.

Mouthfeel: Chewy nearly full body with a moderate carbonation. Surprisingly clean.

Overall: Give thanks for the many splendored birds.

Need more bottles for science. Must age for comparison.

Appearance: Medium amber, with some nice copper, brown, and red tones - hazy and cloudy, just as a barleywine should be - pours with a medium sized, frothy, light beige head - leaves some nice spots of lacing

Smell: Big, sweet, cooked and caramel malts - caramel grains and caramelized malts - big toffee notes with a touch of brown sugar and molasses - rich malts - some interesting fruitiness, with light and dark fruits - definitely smells young (because it is), with some booze

Taste: Straight-up barleywine magic - cooked, caramelized malts - nice caramel malts with some hints of sugar, brown sugar, molasses, toffee, and straight-up caramel - some light fruits and some dark fruits, like grapes, plums - moderate amount of bitterness - minimal oxidation, thanks to the fact that this is young - will definitely mature and improve with some time, but it's surprisingly good now

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body, very smooth, nice level of carbonation

Overall: Dude, gratitude

This is a great barleywine. The most impressive thing is that it tastes great, even young. This will only improve in time. This is hard to get, but it's worth seeking out.

Purple waxed bottle.

Appearance: opaque light brown. No head present. It's really nothing outlandish; it's very simple and straight forward.

Smell: Ton of vanilla, dark fruits, and some ripe bananas. Also a touch of oak. Very sweet and inviting.

Taste: Wow, it's so delicious. It starts out really sweet and mellow; some bitterness just gradually comes in but nothing too aggressive. Tasted notes of vanilla, dark fruits and a subtle spiciness. This really is outstanding, it's such a simple barleywine that doesn't over complicate things. But what really blew me away is it's sweetness. It's sweetness was concocted so well yet it's not cloying.

Mouthfeel: very smooth and silky with minimal carbonation

Overall: this is outstanding. It's not a complicated barleywine; instead its simple, sweet, and mellow.

750ml bottle of the 2013 vintage, purple wax. Thanks to Matt B for bringing this one over to share. Poured into a Toppling Goliath snifter today, 2/5/2014.

App- Dark brown, hazy, with a thin brown head that dissipates quickly. Not much lacing or retention.

Smell- Holy molasses and brown sugar! There is a small citrus (grapefruit, lemons) bite to this but this is mostly the malts here. Which is certainly not a bad thing. Dark fruits, toffee.

Flavour- Citrus, raisins, molasses, brown sugar, caramel, toffee, a bit of honey. A bit of alcohol, but in a good way. Very sweet beer for sure. The hops are a bit subdued here.

Mouthfeel- Thick bodied, creamy, on the verge of syrupy. Easy to drink despite the 11% ABV not showing up at all. Aftertaste is a very sweet molasses-type flavour that sticks for a while.

Overall- Tasty American barleywine. Complex with a lot of different sources of sweetness to it. The hops are clearly secondary to the malts, which is what I like in a non-BA barleywine. Thanks for this one Matt.

APPEARANCE: Pours a two finger, medium looking, fluffy, off-white head with excellent retention. Deep burnt orange or mahogany in color, clear, with lower levels of carbonation. A ring remains until the end and leaves some falling dots of lacing down the glass. Good looking barleywine.

SMELL: Lots of caramel, honey and toffee, red fruits, berries and sweet red apples on the nose. Some citrus hops as well, with grapefruit and lemon notes. Bold and enticing, advertising lots of sweetness.

TASTE: Caramel, toffee and honey sweetness up front, with some nice red fruits, apples and berries as well. Complex with lots of sweet malts up front. Big flavors after the swallow as well, with more sweetness and red fruit flavors, some citrus and lemon hop bitterness, as well as some spicy alcohol lingering on the palate. Good balance between sweet malts up front, bitterness and boozy alcohol after the swallow. It's still too hot, unfortunately, but the flavors are there.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Very creamy on the palate, goes down smooth with a bit of a burn and finishes mouth-coating. Some solid heat lingers.

OVERALL: This is really, really good. It's very complex and the cooperation between the sweet malts, bitter hops and boozy alcohol works very well together. Although it doesn't get in the way per se, it's still quite hot at the moment, so giving it some time might be a good idea. I'd like to get another bottle to sit on for a couple years, or even just get an older bottle of this to try out. Probably 3-4 years would be the sweet spot. Cheers again cparles. This was great.

2013 bottle.

A: Pours a dark red with some brown. Quite cloudy. Tall, dense and thick dark tan head. Head fades slowly with great retention. Pretty substantial thick and dense chunks of lacing.

S: Loaded with dark fruits. Loads and loads of raisins primarily. Some dates and prunes too. Typical dried dark fruit aroma. Big heavy bread malts. Hints of brown sugar dance in and out when swirled.

T: Oh yeah, some decent hoppiness up front. Was not expecting that. Citrusy, primarily orange with some grapefruit I'd say. Heavy dark fruits again, primarily raisin. Heavy heavy liquid bread maltiness with lots of stale crust flavor. Minor hit of bitterness in the finish with bursts of citrus. Lingering grainy breadiness, toffee and hop bitterness, leaving this almost dry in a way.

M: Heavy, borderline syrupy. Medium to low carbonation.

O: Nice mildly hoppy barleywine. Great layers of complexity that are quite well balanced. Big and heavy without being too sweet or boozy. Though some barrel aging would certainly accentuate this one, I think. Still delicious, any way you slice it.

2006 Vintage consumed in the Fall of 2015.

So complex at this juncture that you'd almost swear that it's barrel aged. Caramel, Toffee, Figs, Raisin, Burnt Sugar, even a bit woody/musty. If there's a better non-barreled Barleywine out there, I haven't had it.

Review for the '06 vintage.

Pours a burnt treacle. Resilient head/lacing.

Smell is aged barleywine honeycomb, sherry, mint, menthol.

Heavy on the palate with a woody burnt deliciousness, actually quite dry. More honeycomb and roast. Bitter and still strong hops in the finish.

A good advertisement for aging.

Bottle with massive props to MrKennedy. Shared 2005 and 2010 version at same tasting with MrKennedy and mulder1010. This review is for the 2005, which was far superior.

Pours an impressively turbid mahogany amber with a moderate beige head that falls with minimal fuss to a collar.

The ageing has worked wonders here, as the nose is amazingly smooth, mellow and integrated. Strawberry jam, slightly tart cherries, raisins, cranberries, complemented by mild oxidation contributing woody spice notes.

Lush smooth raspberry jam and figs before, amazingly given the age, a piney hop bit kicks in. Some booze heat, but it's wanted.

Syrupy and full with mellow, just adequate carbonation. Mild lingering bitterness from the residual hop presence.

Such a joy to drink. Not overly complicated, just seamlessly integrated thanks in large part to the mellowing effects of age on the pungent barleywine yeast and alpha acid character.

750ml bottle of the 2006 vintage poured into a Duvel tulip. Huge thanks to standardcherry for this finely aged masterpiece.

Appearance: Dark orange with a fluffy 2" head that manages to hang around and leaves very nice lacing.

Smell: Caramel and toffee dominate the malty aroma.

Taste: Wow, same as the nose with caramel and toffee, plus some apricot flavor, all finished off with citrus from the hops, more toward orange than straight-up grapefruit. Despite having so many sweet flavors this beer was very, very well balanced. Never too sweet, never cloying. Just delicious start to finish.

Mouthfeel: Extraordinarily smooth and creamy yet finishing clean on the palate.

Overall: The best barelywine I have ever tasted. So, so much flavor. I feel lucky to have had the chance to try it.

Review from notes. 2010 Vintage.

A: Pours a clear brown color with a small tan head on top made up of rather large bubbles. Quickly, the bubbles reduce to a ring on top, minimal lacing.

S: Lots of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar as well as a good amount of fruit - some raisin, fig, and plum.

T: Similar to the aroma, but better. A great mixture of caramel, brown sugar, and toffee, but much smoother and blended together better than the aroma (not that it was bad on the aroma, the flavor was just better). More dark fruit mixed in as well.

M: Medium to full bodied with low to medium carbonation, extremely smooth.

O: One of the best barleywines I have had, rich and complex, but extremely smooth and easy drinking for style and abv. Fantastic.

From what I know, Gratitute wouldn't carbonate in the bottle, twice, so this is a force carbed growler pour. Epic.

Taste is sweet and sugary, caramel, butter bread, sweet fruits, plums, dates.

Creamy, slick, and oily. Fully bodied and filling.

2009 vintage. Poured from a 750 ml paper wrapped bottle into a Pipeworks snifter.

A- pours dark copper with a 1 finger light tan head. Large bubbles and some t.rails of lacing remain on the glass.

S- caramel, brown sugar, maple syrup, big citrus notes.

T- sweet caramel and brown sugar, toffee, lots of citrus with nearly no bitterness.

M- medium body and carbonation. Crazy smooth and drinkable right now.

O- very good American Barleywine. Very sweet and citrusy beer that has a great mouthfeel. I wish I have had this fresh to compare if it has more bitterness and any other differences.

Force-carbonated FLATitude. Aka 2012 Gratitude. From growler to snifter. You don't even want to know what I had to go through to nab this (Ok, you do; but you don't).

Looks very hazy. Burnt orange/amber in color. The head of an inch fell pretty quickly. Looked cream-colored.

Toffee malts, citrus hops (grapefruit), leather, pancake batter, light roast, and a hint of vanilla. The 'lot' that is in the aroma blends together really nicely in the nose. Notes don't particularly isolate themselves right away, but they can be picked apart carefully. No obvious booze, mind you!

Dark caramel, toffee, spicy booze, more leather, grapefruit/orange hops, and light malty roast. Moderate bitterness seems a lot more gruff when paired with the alcohol. Slight brandied flavor that conjures up notes of raisin and dates. Very simply good.

Exceptionally smooth. Force-carbonation doesn't fail, nor does it go over-the top. Well-dispersed gases. The body is amazing. Full and silky. Alcohol turns out to be right where it should be. Excellent sipper.

It's a very well-made barleywine. Long finish and heady strength (but the aroma wouldn't justify that remark). I'm more and more tempted to crack my '07 bottle, every day.

Indigo wax (2010), review from notes taken in 2011.

Poured perfectly clear. Deep maple, almost brown, but beautiful honey hues in the light. Creamy, long lasting head with multiple trails of lace. Very nicely balanced aromas of caramel creme and grapefruit zest... reminds me almost of a creamsicle very briefly, but then turns into english toffee, butterscotch, and a touch of vanilla. The forefront is sweet and fruity, leading to a mid palate burst of molasses, toffee, raisins, and finishing with rum and citrusy hops. Perfect carbonation for this style and flavor profile. Absolutely amazing barleywine.

Bottle pour for New Brew Thursday's 3rd Anniversary event held at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.

2009 vintage - blue wax.

Pours a murky orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with a citrus zest flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with some nice barleywine aromas and flavors.

2010 poured into a GI tulip. Part of the NWI tasting group New Year's Day

A - Chestnut brown with lemon hues. Reminds me of a light syrup in color. A bit hazy and looks thick. There is only a slight white head that lingers on the edges

S - Light bready malt with a slight piney hop presence that still remains. I also get orange and lemon in the nose

T - Bready malt and light brown sugar upfront. There is also dates and figs, orange peel and light lemon. There is a slight bitterness that lingers in the finish

MF - Medium body with light syrupiness. Clean finish with only a light astringent and bitterness that remains on the finish

O - Solid barleywine that definitely leans towards the bready and malty side. Worth trying a bottle if you can get ahold of one.

2010 vintage; indigo wax, split

appearance: The most gorgeous packaging of any beer I have seen. Served in my lost abbey teku glass - bright orange, rather light beige ring, minimal lace

smell: aroma was mild - rich malt, butterscotch, oak, vanilla

taste: Big malty profile - caramel, bready, toffee, vanilla, dried fruit. A little undercarbonated and puzzling whale-status. A good barleywine, but not really anything beyond that

mouthfeel: Oily, medium body

overall: good
