Style: American Adjunct Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.90%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
America's first domestic ice beer, Icehouse is traditionally brewed, fermented and, just before aging, its temperature is lowered to below freezing. This process imparts the beer's smoothness and an alcohol content that's slightly higher (5.5% by volume) than other regular premium beer brands. Icehouse was introduced in 1993 and has reinforced its position as the ultimate beer for wind-up and pre-game occasions. Blending humor and high-energy excitement, Icehouse marketing encourages its target consumers to take occasions to the next level with a great-tasting beer.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3 | taste: 1.5 | feel: 2.5 | overall: 1.5

Poured from 24oz tall can into a pint glass.

Appearance: medium golden hue with a clear body and a decent effervescence. Head is a finger of frothy white foam that doesn't have much retention. Actually, it's not too bad for the style.

Smell: light, largely inoffensive aroma, probably helped by its relative coldness right now. A little bit of plastic and corn come in around the edges; par for the course for the style, and like I said, not yet warm enough to be offensive.

Taste: here's where this beer *really* shines. At first taste, it's cold -- just how it ought to be served. Unfortunately, but the time it hits my gullet, it has warmed up enough to show its true colors. The aftertaste of this beer is all plastic and metallic and, well, lots of other inedible things. Blech.

Mouthfeel: pretty light body with a little bit of fizz. Not that interesting.

Overall: even for a cheap beer in a big can, this is not too good.
