I love a ChANlenge when finding new & different beers for The CANQuest (tm)! This one will be my last for New Beer Sunday (NBS), Week 727, but it is a beauty!
From the CAN: "Limited Edition".
I stared down the 24-fl. oz. CAN, daring it in its defiance before I finally Crack!ed open its massive vent, I could not handle a mess at this hour, nor could I take a ChANce, so I went with a slow, gentle Glug. This still ended up forming two-plus fingers of fizzy, foamy, soapy light-tan head with lousy retention. Shrug. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled like those nasty little apples that never seemed to ripen during the summer on my maternal grandparents' tree. Gaa! Mouthfeel was on the verge of thin/watery. but imprecisely. The taste was not sour enough for my taste, but instead, it was quite sugary sweet. I get that they were going for a Jolly Rancher-style taste, but there was just too much residual sugar in this to pull it off. Are you supposed to sweat when drinking this? Man, it was kinda tough between its intended flavor & its inherent sweetness. I CAN feel a hangover coming on from this gem. Finish was semi-sweet … or was it semi-dry? Grr.
I guess that this needs to be CANsidered on several levels. 1) Does it make it as a Fruit & Field Beer? Kinda, but was it natural or artificial? 2) When it is labeled as "Sour" & it comes off rather sweet with a tart tanginess, does that count? 3) Does anybody care?
Man, I am deeply CANflicted on this one. Stylistically, okay, but overall, it was a hangover waiting to happen. 8=( YMMV.

Redd's Wicked Sour Apple has a thin, fizzing-away, off-white head, a clear, bubbly, copper-gold appearance, and no glass lacing. The aroma is of sour apple, with a whiff of pale malts. The flavor is similar, with green apple & golden apple aspects. Mouthfeel is high medium, and Redd's Wicked Sour Apple finishes medium dry.

Drank from the 24oz. can. This is just pure candy. I've had a couple of the others in this Wicked line, but this one is the most over the top with the artificial fruit flavor. Like drinking a green apple lollipop. Almost no alcohol detected at all, making it drinkable as juice for its ABV, which is the point, really. Not for me.

ONE PINT 8 FL. OZ. can
Served in a becker glass
This beverage pours amber with golden highlights. It achieved little head that disappeared before it could leave any lacing.
It smells like apple juice.
It tastes like apple juice. It is sweet.
Thin bodied with a sugar water mouthfeel
It is 8% and chuggable. I got it for an after mowing beverage. It is okay. I may have it again. I am a sucker for gas station tall boys.

24 ounce can into tulip glass, best before 5/03/2021. Pours crystal clear deep golden/orange/amber color with a 1 finger foamy off head with good retention, that reduces to thin lace cap that lingers. Some spotty soapy lacing on the glass, clinging bubbles and streaming carbonation. Aromas and flavors of big juicy green apples, fruit peel, citrus, grain, white sugar syrup, caramel and herbal/grassy earthiness. Touch of alcohol booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Light herbal/grassy bitterness and alcohol spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of juicy green apples, ripe fruit peel, citrus, grain, white sugar syrup, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great robustness and balance of apples, and grain/sugar flavors; with a great malt/bitter/alcohol spiciness balance, and no cloying sweetness after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and spicy alcohol. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Medium-plus carbonation and body; with a very smooth and lightly creamy/syrupy/sticky mouthfeel that is awesome. Fairly refreshing for the ABV. Mild increasing warmth of 8% after the finish. Overall this is a great flavored malt liquor. All around nice robustness and balance of apples, and grain/sugar flavors; dangerously smooth and easy to drink for the ABV with the mildly bitter/spicy alcohol finish. A very enjoyable offering without feeling too artificial. Tasted much like other malt beverages I've had, but much smoother for the ABV.

From the 24 fl. oz. can with no canning or expiration date noted. Sampled on January 31, 2019.
It pours a bright golden amber with a quick lasting head that dissipates in about 5 seconds. Decent clarity. This has caramel coloring added so my "look" rating is much lower.
The aroma most definitely exhibits green apple characters with a nuisance cardboard or papery grain presence under it. No alcohol for 8%.
Light, yet smooth, body.
AS for the flavor there is still no booze but plenty of apple to the point of overtaking everything else. I guess that is the point. But the ending is crisp and fairly clean. Just not my thing but an easy way to get hammered with all that apple character.

Bought a 24oz can Times Supermarket $2.75
Smells like apples
Heavy mouthfeel
Medium carbonation
Sour, taste of apples
Overall it delivers on its name, but seems too syrupy to me. Appears that their wicked line means sweeter syrupy version. Not for me.
