I fix sewers and water mains. After a hot day in the hole, I want a beer I don’t have to think about. Magnum does it for me. Bought a 24oz roadie. It’s a yellow, clear, typical American beer that isn’t very carbonated and doesn’t have a big head. It’s smooth and, because it’s ice ice cold, doesn’t have a strong smell. Overall, it’s a solid, non-offensive malt liquor to throw back after a hard day at work. Like I say, try it. If you don’t like it you’ll be out less than $2.

24oz can stamped NOV0419 poured into a vintage Schlitz goblet at just below fridge temp (malt liquor gets a 10 min freezer treatment before review). No ABV listed on can. The beer pours bright light straw yellow with nearly white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and leaves a little lacing. The aroma is faint with a hint of corn and very light fruit (apple) from the yeast. The taste is semisweet grain with a touch of tart before a barely bittered finish. The mouthfeel is thin bodied with above average carbonation and an undry finish. There is a underlying taste/feel of incomplete fermentation, but it is not pronounced or overly unpleasant. Overall, good for $1.66/24 malt liquor. Far less flawed than most competitors.

Damb, I had forgotten about this one. In our first apartment, we had a neighbor who drank this all the time. I had one with him 5 or 6 times, never could get used to the taste and the smell. I can't describe it other than not appealing.

24 ounce can into lager glass, best before 4/22/2019. Pours crystal clear medium golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense and rocky white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of cracker, corn, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey/pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. A bit of fruity corn aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with pale malt/grains and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big cracker, corn, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey/pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Touch of corn fruitiness. Light herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, corn, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey/pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness of pale malt/grains and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Very clean on lager flavors, with no yeasty notes present. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and carbonation. Medium-plus carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 5.6%. Overall this is a very good malt liquor. All around nice robustness of pale malt/grains and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and fairly crisp/clean/refreshing to drink, with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. Very clean and nicely rich barley/grain flavors, with solid earthy hop presence/balance for the style. Not overdone on adjuncts. A very enjoyable offering, and outstanding style example. Once again Miller proves they make the best adjunct lagers. Was very impressive.

Drank from a 42 ounce plastic bottle. Scores are based on the style.

Look - A really lazy looking label, doesn't stir up anything in me. The liquid is slightly darker than other malt liquors but doesn't froth up as much.

Smell - Sweet grain and corn with a slight pungent bitterness. Much more scent than other examples in the style.

Taste - Taste follows the smell with a bit of a dirty earthy quality. Not too bad.

Feel - Thin body with very flat carbonation. The complete opposite of most other malt liquors. Very drinkable.

Overall - The poor label gives off a bad first impression, but I was pleasantly surprised. A quite good malt liquor.

Is a golden yellow color with a one finger head.
Smells of dank hops, light malt and booze.
Tastes rather sweet and of corn like all Miller products, some bitterness, not bad at all for a malt liquor.
Mouthfeel is cloying and syrupy.
Overall, a surprisingly good malt liquor.

Another cheap brew, good for the price, $1.25 for 24 oz. There are still better cheap options with higher ABVs. Hurricane or SR are better with higher ABVs.

Weird how something with so much carbonation couldn't hold a head on it, otherwise yellow. Tons of alcohol smells from it, how is this less than 6%?

Taste is more alcohol, hot, carbonation is high, hopping is only there to provide some bitterness and preservative effect. Even more corn than High Life, tastes even worse.

I find myself reviewing this malt liquor. Typical Miller product, so you get corn in there. For a malt liquor the ABV isn't that high. There is a hint of grain in the smell, slightly hoppy. To tell the truth, this is one of the better malt liquors.

Magnum malt liquor pours out golden yellow. A lot of lacing on the glass. Streaming bubbles running up this glass. Smell of corn, grain, and malts. Taste get some malt, corn, and a touch of hops. Finishes smooth crisp clean and refreshing. One if the Better malt liquors. Might be my favorite.

Awesome appearance. Three fingers of bone white dense head that lasted 20 minutes leaving dense lacing all the way down. Head is still there and depositing lace.
Smell is a bit funky and I think it is an herbal hop variety that is giving that funky earthy aroma.
Taste is similar to the nose. Dominated by the herbal grassy hop flavor and the malts are there but don't quite balance the hops.
Mouthfeel is light to medium with good carbonation.
Finish is slightly dry and the hop bitterness is long lasting.
Weird date on the bottom of the bottle. It is a Julian date which is a Bud thing I thought. It says 255 14 which would be close to 100 days before the year end of 365.
I hope that is a born on date or I am tasting an aged version of this beer!

From a 40! Stamped MAY0514-CO5110027. Sampled on January 12, 2014.

One needs to look at this based on the style rather than on the reputation of American malt liquors...which among craft brew fans is about the lowest it can be.

Malt liquors are supposed to look pale yellow with a big fizzy white head. This does.

malt liquors normally smell of rancid corn, rice, grain, and other adjuncts. This one does not. Yes, those characters are there but they are far more muted. Quite frankly this smells a lot like a standard American pale lager.

Malt liquor bodies are often thin and watery. This one is smooth and about medium.

Malt liquors can make you wince with the metallic taste and overly rambunctious corn and grain characters. There is a bit of that here but this is not cloying or rancid. It is really smooth. If more malt liquors were like this one I'd be drinking a lot of them. Sorry previous raters and BA members, I have to score it much higher than you did.

The true budget malt liquor for the budget minded consumer who wants the most bang for his buck but wont settle on Steel Reserve. It is just as a malt liquor should be; cheap, adjunct to hell and with just enough hops to provide a level of bitterness and contrast to the beer that its noticeable but definitely not enough to break the brewers bank. The overall result is a very sweet and enjoyable malt liquor that really finishes clean and has an enjoyable taste but really is nothing special for the price but will definitely quench your thirst and give you the budget buzz you were looking for. Wish I could rate it higher but Country Club XXX and King Cobra had more going on then this malt liquor. Would recommend if you cant afford Old E 800 or if your store doesn't have Genesee at the very least, but not bad for the price and much better then Hurricane or Steel Reserve!

40 oz. bottle, with the best by date reading July 15, 2013. The second malt liquor beer by Miller that I am reviewing here on BeerAdvocate. The first was Olde English 800, and I'm not really expecting this one to be any better. Acquired at the local beer store for $1.79 after trudging through snowy slush to get there.

Poured into a Firestone Walker pint glass.

A - Pours the typical clear yellow piss malt liquor color with a quarter inch of thin white head that fizzles away almost immediately. Looks exactly the same as how a Miller Lite or Olde English 800 or any other Miller product looks in a glass.

S - Sweet chemically treated malts and corn husks. To give it the benefit of the doubt, this beer definitely smells better than a Miller Lite at least.

T - Artificially sweet sugars and corn / grain. Moderate level of carbonation, lightly bodied. There really isn't any discernable "taste" to be had here other than a prominent taste of corn.

M - Smooth and clean, thin and light bodied. My mouth tastes like corn kernels.

Overall, this is just a plain simple alcohol delivery vehicle for people looking to get their cheap buzz on, which is exactly what I plan on doing with it considering the murk I had to hike through to get this. (In my defense, I bought some *good* beer also). Anyway, like the others have said before me, this beer isn't horrible or offensive, it's just a bland alcohol delivery vehicle. The guy two reviews below me said it best - another tick off the bottom of the barrel list with plenty more to go.

24 ounce can
Served in a pilsner glass

A - It is straw colored with ample carbonation bubbles rising from the etchings on the bottom of the glass. It is topped with two inches of white head.

S - I notice some floral hops that give it a soapy smell. I also get sweet grains.

T - It tastes a lot like an adjunct lager. I get some sweet grain flavors and a slight bitterness from a small dose of hops.

M - Thin with biting carbonation

O - I'm not going to lie. I drink my fair share of malt liquor after a shitty day at work. I am used to the 8+ percent varieties. This just tastes like an adjunct lager.

S - Corn. Corn. Corn. Corn. Corn. Corn. Corn.

T - Lots of corn as expected from the nose, And some slight sugar in the finish.

M - Medium carbonation with a medium body.

O - Overall, not a terrible malt liquor. It does it's job at the price you'd expect to pay.

Big thanks goes out to the BA who sent me this one as an extra just because he saw it on my Wants! Even attached a post-it note taped to it that said, “SAW THIS ON YOUR WANTS!! HAHA”. Keeping it classy. Served from 24 oz can into a Mikkeller oversized wine glass (have to try to class it up some). Poured a golden yellow with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, corn, grain, and sugar. The flavor was of sweet malt, corn, sugar, alcohol, and water. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty bad brew. I have to say that this was a pretty nice looking brew. But I knew not to judge a book by its cover here as this brew likely had a hidden side. Boy was I right on that one…. The aroma was not that great on this one as there was a fairly large sugary aspect going on with it. The flavor was more of the same with more dilution. As a previous review said this was very mild and it being in a can format would make it fun to shotgun at a college frat party (believe me, I was there once). Another tick from the Bottom of the Barrel list with plenty more to go.

24oz can for .89 cents in Cedar Lake Indiana.

its slightly better in 40oz bottles.

average, run of the mill malt liquor...actually slightly below average but its not horrible when compared to Evil Eye or St. Ides or Stack.

at 89 cents for a 24oz can, i couldnt pass it up for a quick drunk.

i rated it a 2 for taste because it actually has hardly any taste...its not offensive tasting, its just not there....the price point is definitely meant for the economy drinker looking to get messed up..4 cans of this for less than 4 bucks...and considering its watery and almost tasteless...you can shotgun or seriously pound these and at 6.0%...itll get you a buzz if you drink said 4 cans in 30 minutes.

Magnum - So cheap it's bad, so bad it's cheap.

A: No, I didn't pour it out of the clear 40 oz. bottle. Extremely clear golden-yellow color. Not very inviting. Huge amount of bright white foam and huge bubbles on top after ever drink. Bubbles dissipate but some of the foam is always present. Does Miller add dish soap to this? It may actually leave a little lacing if poured into a glass.

S: Not as bad as you might expect. The smell tells you this is going to be one of the lighter tasting malt liquors relative to say a Steel Reserve or an Earthquake. The smell reminds me of an 'old man' beer like PBR or Milwaukee's Best. Hey, Miller makes such products: MGD and High Life. Sugary sweetness, corn, some cooked vegetables.

T: Extremely carbonated. It's a crisp, champagne like carbonation. There is that tie-in to High Life again. Very sweet. Like the smell, it's a soda-like sugary sweet. There is a toasty malt flavor but it's hard to pick up though it becomes more pronounced as the beer warms. The sweetness lingers well after you swallow. Some bitterness up front.

M: I like carbonation, I'm a big fan. It takes a lot for me to say this but Magnum is borderline overly carbonated. The carbonation takes center stage and is harsh on your tongue. Expect to rip huge burps constantly. Otherwise it is slick with a light-oil thickness.

O: This is really just a concentrated, or 'ice', version of High Life. I don't find that surprising as it seems mostly everything Miller sells is just a variation on a theme. It hits really weak for something that is supposedly 6.0%. Never overrate your ABV in this market.

Pours a pale amber colour, not too crystal clear, which is good for a malt liquor. Head is also good for a malt liquor. It poured white and healthy and didn't entirely disappear. I think I even see some lace.
Smell is wet grains. Very old-school malt liquory, if that means anything to anybody.
Mouthfeel is light and VERY high carbonation.
Taste is disappointing after the decent appearance and delicious malt liquor smell. That old-school malt liquor taste is there, but it's really quite light. It just tastes like high carbonation and stale grains, mostly. Oh well. I'd say it's an average malt liquor: boring, but not offensive like some of the newer, higher alcohol malt liquors. I won't buy it again when Olde English and Schlitz O.M.L. are easily attainable and far superior.

Decided to pick one of these up since they're practically free right now ay my corner store. I'm not sure why, because it doesn't even LOOK tasty, but we'll see. Brownish yellow liquid with some sudsing on top from the ride home in my bike bag. Smells really, really sweet and of corn and grain. Sugary, fruity flavor with unpleasant, bitter undertones. Feels a bit watery, especially for malt liquor. I guess you get what you pay for.

40oz poured into a Three Philosophers wine-style glass in order to be fashionably ironic. Considered drinking out of the bottle, but thought that would be too meta-ironic. Also, I wanted to rate the head. As if it matters. Stamped AUG2211 on neck. Anyway, lets crack this pig open.

Appearance - A hard pour gave a finger and a half head which looks like it's going to dissolve in the next minute or so. Why am I even rating this? Ultra pale straw body.

Smell - Strong corny sweetness. I'd have trouble telling this apart from a Warsteiner in a blind smell test. Not bad. Well, for the style at least.

Taste - Damn. Even tastes like a Warsteiner. Not bad. Again -- for the style. As a beer, the taste is still pretty base. Corn with slight musk.

Mouthfeel - Slight crispness. Sweet body with a strange finish. It's both dry and sweet at the same time. Sweetness on the lips, and a dry astringency on the tongue.

Overall Drinkability - Meh. There's only one product named Magnum that one should be proud of buying, and this isn't it.
