This is a traditional pub in the centre of Cardiff, that has managed to keep its original character and spirit, in the face of the gastro pub onslaught around it (there are about 3 whetaherspoons and a revolution within spitting distance). As with almost all brewery owned pubs in Cardiff, it's Brains at the reigns.

The atmosphere is great. Lots of nice regulars and tourists alike, and no sign of drinkers looking for cheap booze in the hope of getting battered before a night on the town. The people you meet here will be people looking for a quite drink and a chat in a homely pub.

The beers are all Brains as you would expect, they have a good range and beers like SA and the Dark Mild are always superb on cask.

After watching Grimsby Town somehow lose to Cheltenham in a Soccer promotion play-off we hid in here while the city emptied of football fans.

Lovely old place, all dark wood and padded seats. Friendly locals, bouncers on the door on our visit, but doubt they are needed on a normal evening in Cardiff.

Pleasant staff and good quality cask ales, all from Brains of course, didn't notice what keg fizzy beers they had on offer.

We were all downhearted after our defeat, but this place helped us to get over our disappiontment.

Again amazed WolfAtTheDoor should review this place, that is the two pubs in Cardiff we have both been to (he stayed with me before setting off for Wales).

This small single room pub, at the top end of St Marys Street, close to Cardiff Castle is a little haven of beer and quiet relaxation! Is larger inside than the exterior hints at, with L shaped room and bar. As usual with most Cardiff pubs, the beers are from Brains, and the full range normally available, the SA and SA Gold being very good. Typical Victorian interior, dark wooden panelling, small windows but cosy atmosphere. Can be busy mid-day and evening with local shoppers, office staff and tourists, but always seems relaxed atmosphere. Beers consistently on good form, and (though did not try it) good value food menu.

Definately worth a visit when in the area and close to Cardiff Castle.

Update June 2009

Think this is now my fav Cardiff pub, cosy friendly place, beers on good form on hand pull -Brains Mild, Bitter, SA and SA Gold, and one Guest Beer. Usual lagers, Guiness and Brains Lager too. Food good value is served most of the day (unless sporting event or concert on at Millennium Stadium) Highly Recommended.

This was a fantastic pub in Cardiff. I stumbled in here after watching the Cardiff Blues narrowly get beat by Edinburgh.

Adorned beautifully in wood, probably the most handsome traditoinally decorated pub I visited in Cardiff.

I think I saw the full range of Brains cask ales offered, however I stuck with the SA (red label) after sampling them all. They have pint glasses for sale as well if you're into that sort of thing (I am!).

Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a good old fashioned pub atmosphere in Cardiff.

Wonderful place. It's right on High Street, so it has a bit of a tourist pull. But the locals all gather here in the corner of the room, and if you want to hear Welsh being spoken, sit by the fireplace.

Beers are mostly from Brains, but that's not a bad thing: the bitter was very tasty, and the dark was one of the best beers I had in the UK. Definitely give it a try if you find yourself over there. Carlsburg is everywhere in the UK, and Guinness has its own special ubiquity. Stella is making the rounds, as well. Just order the Brains. Good stuff.

Food was terrific. Welsh Rarebit with red mustard, and steak pie. Glorious.

A lovely pub on the high street in Cardiff, Wales. Atmosphere is welcoming and inviting with dark wood all around, and a very roomy bar. This roomy bar, I speak of pours all of the Brains ales as well. 3 or 4 on cask, and quite a few others on tap as well. The dark is the best of the bunch and at like 1.50 a pint, you can't go wrong. The service here was definately with a smile and all of the pints sampled were right on form as well. A damn good pub in Cardiff. The best I found in fact. If you find yourself in the area of Cardiff castle and you are quite parched, make this pub your first post-castle-tour stop.
