Poured from a green bottle, this beer had no head after about a minute and not much carbonation throughout. The color was a bright light gold. An initial sweetness, with a bit of straw flavor that passed quickly , leaving behind a bit of a bite and some mild hoppy length. A decent lawnmower beer, easy to drink, but cheap for sure and already deteriorating in the green bottle.

This is starting to grow on me. But that just means it's gone from repulsive to tolerable. Maybe a few more in I'll begin to kinda enjoy it. But, alas, I won't be in Iceland long enough to develop a genuine taste for it, which the locals certainly seem to have.

Pours dark for an adjunct lager. Smells of deep, sweet barley. Not *bad*, at least not in any traditional sense, but a little off. Everything about Iceland is weird. And pretty. But mostly weird, like a volcanic dystopian hellscape that through the miracle of the radical science of socialism somehow morphed into an anti-dystopia... a "utopia," if you will.

Erm... anyhow, all my senses are fucked up here. All the people smell like licorice and--I swear to god I am not speaking at all hyperbolic here--downtown Reykjavik smells like flowers and candy. Not, like, near a candy florist, either. The air smells different, and wonderful, but also simultaneously a little offputting, because it's so entirely foreign.

Which is a roundabout description of this beer. It's densely sweet and a little medicinal, but there's nothing about it to suggest that either of those flavors were anything but intentional. It's very grainy, and the grainbill is the obvious star of the show since it's so lightly hopped, but it goes so far against what most American beer people would consider typical that the best I can say for it is that it's an acquired taste.

Clear gold colour. Light malt aromas and a whiff of earthy hops. Crisp and clean, a bit odd malt at the end. Refreshing and light. Not much to it but a decent hot weather beer.

500ml can. I'm guessing 'Gull' means something different in Icelandic than it does in English.

This beer pours clear, pale golden yellow colour, with three fingers of puffy, tightly foamy, and faintly bubbly white head, which leaves a random array of foreboding storm cloud lace around the glass as things slip away.

It smells of grainy, cereal-heavy malt - barley and corn in equal measure - some overripe lemon juice, a touch of stewed veggies, wet cardboard, and earthy, weedy hops. The taste is more raw cereal - corn, barley, and wheat grains - a slight soapy minerality, and subdued weedy, grassy hops.

The carbonation is airy and rather frothy, but hardly assertive, the body medium-light in weight, and a bit clammy in its workaday smoothness. It finishes off-dry, that blanched cereal and wet cardboard combo starting to grow new legs.

A so-so pale Euro lager - enough edgy (good and bad) hop characteristics to keep it dead center in the range. The prominent cereal malt does a good job in elevating this above the dreck, but tends to get a bit old by way of the one-trick pony bit. Anyways, worthy of a try, but sort of middling if you're looking for a world beater for the style.

Never tried an Icelandic beer before. thanks to bruskiator for letting me try this one out (got it from his daughter on a trip). Very clean and crsip. Little carbonation and almost no hop aroma or flavoring. Easy to consume and have as a session beer. Interesting pairing with some hopped English cheese.

Pours a nice sunset yellow. Smells like a lager, kinda skunky. Tastes like a lager, kinda sweet'n skunky. Mouthfeel is fine, though pretty carbonated. I found it really hard to drink, just cause it bubbley and didnt taste good. Bleh. Sorry iceland, but your beer sucks monkey balls.

Can: Poured a golden color lager with a medium foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light adjunct notes with minimal hops presence. Taste is also heavy on adjunct with probably some rice to smooth things out with a light dry finish. Body is average as well as carbonation. Boring and bland as so many other pale lager.

On tap at The Blue Lagoon in Iceland.

This pours a copper color, clear, with a big foamy head and lots of lacing.

This smells like sweet lager yeast, a bit of grassy hops, and some nice bittersweet caramel.

This is a super serviceable Euro lager. It's thirst quenching and super drinkable, with a good malt backbone and a just a kiss of hops. It's not super complex, really at all, but it's still tasty.

This is lighter bodied, with a surprisingly creamy feel to it.

I liked this one for sure. Not the greatest, and a hard style to be blown away by, but still surprising.

16 oz can courtesy of fthomasl pours a clear gold color with a small, fizzy white head. Not much retention or lace. Looks like best by July 1, 2013.

Nose is mostly grainy with a light grassy hop. Falls into the Euro Lager category well.

Taste is refreshing enough and there is a grassy hop presence, but it tastes more like sparkling mineral water than beer. My can I think is saying it is 2.25% ABV, but my Icelandic is a little rusty. Probably the lightest beer I've ever had...I could drink it by the gallon, unfortunately that might not even give a buzz.

Let's face facts: the Euro Pale Lager, as a style, is basically defined by mediocrity. And yet Gull is actually, to my tastes, a competent little beer: light, sharp, slightly herbal and peppery, faint apple skins, cracker and biscuit.

I have nostalgic associations, which may make me biased, but I genuinely enjoy this brew. It's not special, it's just . . . right?
