650ml bottle. Apparently, a modified version of their 'regular' RIS, but with a bucketload of additional ingredients, among them 'a touch of oats, and four different types of Oaxacan chocolate'.

This beer pours a solid black, with slight, mostly basal cola hued highlights, and one finger of soapy, foamy beige head, which skulks like the titular stereotype, eventually leaving some decently consistent streaky lace around the glass in the process.

It smells of bitter chocolate malt, some sour orchard fruitiness, a bit of stringent metallic alcohol, and soft earthy hops. The taste is more edgy chocolate malt, but a different kind of chocolate than so readily found in our culture - this is the stuff of 'south of that border' cuisine - spicy mole, weird candy bars, and not so sweet hot chocolate. I'm getting a fair bit of typical seasonal spices, in a blended sort of way, but interestingly so, as they are not listed, so it must be part of the mirror-world chocolat, non? A slight earthy, somewhat peppy grassy hoppiness tests the waters of freedom here and there as well.

The bubbles are well restrained, the body a sturdy medium weight, and generally smooth, in the face of some sneaky, random spice and hop affronts. It finishes with the same skewed chocolate nature - the un-chocolate: bitter, spicy, and not very sweet, but genuinely beguiling, with some herbal, grassy hops still scratching at the door.

A sidestep, sucker-punch of a beer, I must say - big, chocolaty, and stoutish - but quite lost in intra-continental translation, mis amigos - by the time I gave up trying to reconcile the differences, the bomber, and the effort, was lost. Ah well - the idea of 'winter' in Mexico is a mindfuck to start with, so, drink this with equal uncertainty, and enjoy the ride.
