Ruddy, dark brown in color. Vanilla, figs, Belgium yeast esters, oak, Cherry skins and booze. Smooth. Lower carb. Has a ba old ale vibe. Pretty good.

12 oz. bottle. Almost black body. Medium off-white head. Smells of chocolate, some bready malts, and a little bit of Belgian yeast. Tastes really chocolatey. Not very sweet, though. Some dark fruits and bready malts. Something like a bourbon barrel character, but it’s a pretty light flavor compared to the quad and chocolae. Medium heavy. Nice chocolate flavor. It kinda carries the beer.

650ml bottle of the 2015 release. Served in a snifter glass.

Pours a murky medium dark brown body, one finger offwhite head, fair retention, no lacing. Smells of molasses, honey, caramel, bourbon and milk chocolate. Weird, but promising. Flavour is very nice; it literally does taste like a box of dark chocolate, perhaps the liquor type; bourbon, caramel, milk chocolate, dark chocolate overall comes with a nice liquid inside that clears things up nicely when you bite into the chocolate- that's what this is. Very unique and nicely executed to meet the expectations that arise when the name of the beer is revealed. Mouthfeel is medium-fuller bodied, lower in carbonation than expected, substantial still with a nice melting chocolate finish. This was a good beer that tastes like what the name advertises.

L: very little carbonation, no head to speak of. Pitch black, even at the edges
S: born on and cocoa dominate, with notes of vanilla and caramel
T: most of the traditional quad flavors are gone, replaced by chocolate, pleasant oakiness, and bourbon. Some dark fruit flavor is there underneath, in the flavor of raisins or prunes.
F: full mouthfeel, while the oak lends a dry finish to this
O: definitely a step up from the regular box of chocolate; the look of the initial pour is the only place it falls short. This is quite a good creation that hopefully will continue to be an annual offering

2014 bottling

Appearance: Pours fudge brown, with a modest tan head that quickly fades to a ringlet; leggy, with viscous lacing

Smell: Chocolate, Bourbon and a range of dark fruits - cherry, mostly

Taste: Dark fruit forward, with berry and cherry tones; the chocolate flavors build, through the middle, with the Bourbon and vanilla arriving to bring up the caboose; slightly tart finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I like this better than the base beer but it is still not all that and a box of chocolates; would like to see a fuller mouthfeel and a more complex malt character

Not retired. Date filled 12/15/14. Date bottled 7/10/15. Limited run.

Poured from the bottle a dark mahogany-black with a single finger of tan head. No lacing at all.

Aroma of vanilla, chocolate, ripe red fruit, and booze.

Tasted of chocolate, vanilla cream and boozy notes from the barrels.

Medium bodied and smooth with an average carbonation.

Definitely enjoyed the Barrel-aged version more than the regular Box of Chocolate.
