08/06/10- Had this one on-tap at the brewpub. Not that this is a review of the pub, but the service really sucked. We got the sampler and then went with pints of the stand-outs.
A: Nice glowing amber with an OK cream film and collar.
S: Pale malt, citrus banana, subtle mild hops, quite inviting.
T: Very balanced, almost copper metal characteristics, nice leafy hops finish with citrusy orange peel.
M: Smooth, almost creamy, and frothy.
D: Really good.
Like I said, this one was a surprising stand-out. I'm not a big fan of APAs, but I'd make this a regular if it was available in Ohio.

The beer was poured on tap at the brew-pub, and we took a growler back home. I did not get a cask conditioned beer. The beer was a clear amber with a good head that had good retention and lasting power. It is not a typical American Pale Ale so others may not appreciate it. It seemed a bit more like a British Pale Ale in that the hops were less citrus-y and floral, and not quite as heavily hopped as a "Fat Tire." It was significantly maltier than your average APA. Overall it's simply fantastic, so don't let adherence to a style put you off. The scent is quite floral and the first taste has a fruity floral taste but then it settles into a warm comfortable nuttiness that just shows off the complexity of the malts used. I detected a nice caramel flavor after the maltiness. It kept well in a growler too. Thoroughly enjoyable, too bad we downed the growler in a day.

Tasted on-tap 11/06/06 at Upstream brewpub in Omaha, NE.

Solid gold in color with a nice off-white head. Nice citrusy hop aroma and flavor. Hops tend to dominate in this one but it seems balanced about perfectly with a solid malt counterpart so as not to be really bitter in any way. Medium bodied and smooth with a nicely balanced finish.

A solid American Pale Ale -- not quite English as they state...

Per UBC website: 5.0% ABV. "English Pale Ale"

August 2009 marked my third time in Upstream BC in four years! Three years before, it was THE place to be and that status has not changed. I would not hesitate to send any visitor to Omaha here, but no less for their cask beers than ambiance, food, location ... You get the idea.

This was presented with a finger of ecru head with excellent retention - it sat like it was waiting for something to happen. Color was a (too) cloudy orangish-amber, as if it had been served too quickly to allow it to settle. Nose was distinctly malty and hoppy, very cask-like in its admixture. Temperature was just right, allowing the hops to gently assert themselves. Mouthfeel was very smooth and silky with a light bitterness on the tongue. Finish was mildly hoppy. Hope for some of this to be available when you visit!

On tap at the brewery. Poured a slightly hazy deep copper. Off white amber tinged head, nice lacing throughout. Some floral hops on the nose, some malt, caramel and a little must, nothing really offensive. Flavor was interesting. It had a malt spice background , hop presence leading.. though it was dull and deep. Not the normal sharp bitter/refreshing back I would expect from a pale. Reminded me a bit of an ESB. Finished fairly clean, a little bitter left. Drinkable however.

On tap. Poured out a pale golden amber color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of caramel, sweet bread and citrus. Sweet and malty with a mild bitter bite.

Draught @ Legacy location: This one pours a hazy, lighter coppery color. There was a thin white head that left some lacing. Good nose! Grapefruit, pineapple and a hint of pine. The taste is good. Just a bit bitter, with mainly grapefruit and pineapple hop flavors. Medium bodied. A good pale ale.

This is the first cask ale that I have tried, supposedly they rotate cask-ales here regularly which is great. The color was a hazy orange-copper with a thick, 1/2 inch white cap that did not go away quickly. The lacing on this thing was excellent. Smell was mildly hoppy with a citrus backbone, mostly orange. Tasted nice and hoppy also, again with a sweet orange peel flavor. Malt is a bit nutty/caramelly also. The finish has a decent bitterness, but not overpowering. The warmer serving temperature really lets it go down easy. The mouthfeel is semi-thick, with lower carbonation- as to be expected for an ale on cask. This was overall a great brew. I would have had more but since this was my first visit I had to try some others also. Next time I'm in Omaha I will look for it again...
