tiny little place next to a white hen in a run down old strip mall. ownership is pakistani, i think, so they don't know alot about beer since religion forbids them from drinking. selection is good for a store this small, you can get all 3 3f's sixers, almost full line of dfh including 90 minute and raison d'etre, flying dog, anchor, victory, and several other domestic micros. they even have many of the aforementioned cold. which is good, because if i'm going to this place for beer it means it's after 9pm and i need good cold beer now goddamnit. not much selection, if any of good german, english, or belgian special beers. there are a number of domestic, english, and belgian singles though. don't go here looking for a deal because you won't find it. for example, i found a lone bottle of gumballhead from last year (just before this year's came out) and it was at full price. and you get the feeling they don't give a shit and ain't gonna be talked down, because as previously mentioned, they don't know beer. everything is at or above what you can get it for elsewhere. this is definitely a late night need emergency beer place.
My low marks for this store are influenced not only by what it is today, but by what it used to be. Solo changed ownership roughly 3 years ago. Prior to that time, the beer ordering was done by a goofy, disheveled dude who really cared about beer. My formative beer drinking days were supplied by products purchased from Solo. The real strength of the store was its selection of uncommon beers from the British Isles, particularly a surprising number of Imperial stouts & barely wines.
The change in ownership saw an obvious shift from excellent beer, to flashier, sillier products; specifically, artificially flavored vodkas (stuff like blue raspberry?!?) & flavored rums bottled in gimmicky shapes or topped with caps in the form of hats & whatnot. The only brews to be welcomed with open arms now are the margain-yeiding cases of canned beer. As it's closest to their home, I still shop here occasionally when visiting my parents, but aside from whatever seasonal Bell's beer they're stocking (thank God for that!), this store has fallen in spectacular fashion. Strictly for those throwing a frat party.
Well, it appears as though there was enough backlash over the changes here that Solo has started to resemble its old self again. The service is still very poor, especially when compared to the old guard. However, the selection & quality of said selection have improved dramatically over the last time I was in. Got the Dogfish Head India Brown & a Maudite while I was in. You're on your way back, beautiful.
A nice little store to check out if you happen to be in the Naperville area. This one is in a strip mall right off the road. They have a long shelf in the middle of the store with many different craft brews, including Unibroue, DFH, Two Brothers, 3 Floyds, Bells and more. They also have a good selection of bombers and speciality bottles.
There's no great ambiance here...just your basic liquor store feel, however every time I've been here the staff has always been friendly and helpful. I've never special ordered anything, but I'm sure it can be done. The store would be better if they widened the selection a bit and sold singles, instead of just sixers. However, I don't know that many other good beer stores in the area. So, check this one out, it's definetly worth a stop in!
