In old West Berlin, isolated from the rest of the free-world and surrounded entirely by the communist Deutsche Demokratische Republik for thirty years, the unusually-sour “Berliner Weiss” maintained a strong local identity until the early 2000s, when it vanished seemingly overnight under the post-Wall onslaught of international pilsners. Local brewers have yet to fully revive it, but the style has lately been recreated by countless brewers in the US and beyond.

From the beginning, much of Freigeist Bierkultur’s focus has been on updating semi-forgotten sour ales from its neighbors to the east, and Köpenickiade is a typically quirky twist on the Berlin style—a clean, fresh weisse made with spelt (an ancient form of wheat) and barley malts.

Too sweet for a berlinerweisse. Sour notes arw there but overpowered by the sweet notes. Mouthfeel is also too slick, it should be drier.

A: The beer is relatively clear yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short bright white head that quickly faded away, leaving only a narrow collar around the edge of the glass and some specks of bubbles on the surface.
S: Light aromas of sourness are present in the nose along with hints of apples and peaches.
T: The taste is nearly a mirror image of the smell and has sour flavors of apples and peaches with notes of lactic acid.
M: It feels light-bodied and slightly tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbornation.
O: This beer goes down extremely easy and is flavorful for something that is only 3.5% abv.

Eyes : Clear pale yellow color with a fleeting 1 finger head.

Nose : Barnyard funk and faint musty peach.

Tong-fue : Some horse blanket, seltzer, and the sugar from a peach-o ring. Mild funk.

Cheeks : Crisp, clean, smooth. Drinks like carbonated water.

Overall : It's a 3.5% beer and it tastes like it. Next.

Bottle into a tulip appears hazy pale yellow with a white cap.

Aroma is pleasant with peach/nectarine skins and juice slight grass, earth and lemon.

Taste has unripe peach/nectarine and the skins of such. Straw grain and lemony lacto.

Light in body with moderate carbonation. Very subtle but pleasant fruit addition. Downright poundable and easily approachable berliner just very mild in all aspects across the board.

Pours an cloudy off-white, a bit lighter than a egg white. Foamy head that dissipates pretty quick, no lacing. Lemon juice, some hay - this really smells like a white wine to me. Taste is very subdued, slightly sour notes, but not what I expect from a Berliner. Refreshing mouthfeel, but this borders too closely to a sparkling white wine for me to embrace it.

Golden color with a huge head with great retention.
Aroma with notes of green apples, lemon, lots of bread and mild Yakult.
Flavor has a restrained lactic sourness with hints of lemon, green apples, dough, white grapes, a bit of pepper and unripe nectarines. Dry and short aftertaste.
Light body with good carbonation that makes if fuller.
I found this Berliner Weisse very easy to drink and utterly refreshing. Sourness is well restrained. Somewhat a bit one-dimensional even relatively to style.

Decanted into a standard conical pint glass. Very wispy, slightly off white head that dissipated rather quickly, with a tart apricot and sea salt aroma. Hazy dull golden color. Almost a citric acidity without evidence of citric fruit, rather peach a little lactic acid note. Rather full bodied. Not much of a fan of Berliner Weissbier: this was certainly drinkable and might even make a refreshing summer drink, properly chilled, but disappointed as a little short on flavor.

Bottle.

A: Moderate peach upfront, followed by a moderate, slightly sharp sourness.

A: Light golden, almost straw color, hazy with a uniform white head with adequate retention.

T: Moderately light peach flavor upfront, with an almost wine like note, followed by a somewhat sharp sourness that has slight off-flavor.

M: Light bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Alright; the peaches were noticeable, but the beer's sourness was somewhat sharp and contains a bit of an off-flavor, which overshadows the fruit's presence.
