Whisky imperial stout on-draught @ Braustelle. Cost was 2.80/.2L stemware pour.

HEAD: Dark khaki with average consistency and complexion. Leaves no lacing as it recedes. ~1 minute retention.

BODY: Opaque solid black. No yeast is visible within.

Looks pretty standard, with a brief head and a typical body.

AROMA: Chocolate malts, dark malts, whisky notes of spice and peat (but no oak or vanilla), dank moss.

Not the most complex imperial stout aroma, but a pleasant and whisky-forward one.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Has a peaty dryness and roughness on the palate, which emphasizes the whisky nicely but does impede drinkability. Malt backbone is dark but not too chocolatey, judging by the subdued sweetness. No oak or vanilla comes through.

The whisky eclipses the base, if only because the base offers so little in terms of depth and diversity of flavour. When all the base beer in your imperial stout offers is a generic dark malt sweetness, you know you've got problems.

Simple and somewhat shallow, with a minimalist build and not much robust malt flavour.

Unrefreshing, full-bodied, well-carbonated, and if aot thickness and heft on the palate.

O: Drinkable even if it is a sipper. Neither the base nor the whisky offers much depth, subtlety, or intricacy, but I do like elements of the beer (in particular the peat). I wouldn't buy it again (especially at its obscene price point by German standards), but I'm glad I tried it. Sort of a naïve toe-dip into the imperial stout style by a nascent experimental brewery.
