Opaque dark brown in color, with a small tan head. Poor retention and little to no lacing.
Smells and tastes of sour black cherry, plum, date, fig, brown sugar, molasses, pumpernickel bread, raisin, and a hint of black pepper. Slightly sour. Creamy texture. Almost no hint of its abv but is warming going down. Delicious!

$ 5.29 (Including tax and discount)/330 mL bottle ($ 0.466/oz) at State Line Liquors, Elkton, MD.
Undated bottle. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 57 degrees in a hand-washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.
Body – Coppery brown, hazy, effervescent.
Head – Tiny (Maximum 0.5 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, medium density, rapidly diminishing to a two mm ring fed by effervescence and a thin partial layer.
Lacing – None.
First pour – Medium brown, clear.
Aroma – 3.5 - Sweet with toasted malt. Weakens and fades.
Flavor – 4 – Begins sweet but not cloying. Toasted malt flavor predominates with a hint of toffee and no roasted malt bitterness. No alcohol (10.9% ABV).
Palate – 3.75 - Full, creamy, lively carbonation.
Impression and summation – 3.5 - This beer seems more viscous than other doppelbocks I have consumed. The rye spiciness is absent leaving only a heavy bread-like quality. “Roggenfeld” is literally “Rye field” so why is the rye nearly absent? Shouldn’t the ingredient getting star billing be more apparent? Rye is not apparent on the nose which accentuates the toasted malt. The lively carbonation detracts from an otherwise very good palate. And why is this beer in a 330 mL bottle when other Freigeist offerings are all presented in 500 mL bottles? Furthermore, why are their bottles undated? I had high hopes for this brew, only to be left somewhat disappointed.

Look- pours a murky mahogany brown w/a ring of off white head.

Aroma- prunes, brown sugar and some booze; as the beer warms, the prune becomes less evident and i get more brown sugar and grainy bread, and the booze becomes a bit more pronounced

Taste- starts with a rich doughy malt flavor w/a little of the prune and brown sugar; then it transitions into some tartness along with a black pepper spicy zip, and some booze. not picking up any hop flavors that i'm aware of

Feel- full-bodied and chewy, one of the thickest beers I've ever had. Low carbonation. Long finish with a boozy tingle

Overall- some interesting malt flavors combined with a super chewy feel make for a unique and enjoyable beer

Pours kind of a deeper russet brown with a thinner light beige head atop.Plum, smoke, and chocolate malts stand out aroma-wise with slight alcohol coming into play as it warms.A nice spicy and smoky element on the palate, the smoke notes come as a surprise but a pleasant one at that, underlying chocolate, brown sugar, and roasted nuts show thru as well.No others seem to have picked up on the smoke flavors but I'am surely getting them,I like this rye bock, solid.

On at the King's Head pub today.

The beer pours a fairly dark brown color with fair head retention and lacing. On the nose, the beer smells as if it will be fairly sweet, as I pick up vanilla, brown sugar (a lot of it), considerable sweet malt, and a hint of molasses. The flavor replicated the nose, and frankly, I thought this beer came across as more of sweet, strong brown ale then a dopplebock. There was maybe a hint of licorice on the palate as well (I assume from the rye), but in the end, the brown sugar and molasses dominated the flavor profile to the point I had a hard time drinking this beer. Mouthfeel was OK. The beer was medium bodied, with a long sweet finish. Also, the alcohol is very well integrated into the flavor profile. Frankly, I was shocked to see that it was 10.6%, as you get no sense that the abv. is up that high.

An OK beer, but not one that I need to revisit any time soon. Unfortunately, I didn't get the same hot deal Derek got for his glass (I think the price was around $7 for a 10 ounce pour), and so there was nothing to take the sting out of the cost of this beer. Oh well...

Happy hour at Brauhaus Schmitz turns a $12 beer into a $4 beer. Giddyup. Served in an appropriate glass mug, deep chestnut brown pour, translucent, with a thin tan head. Nutty malt aroma, sweet and leafy. Taste was big on German malts, as would be expected, nutty, fruitcake sweetness, hints of molasses and pumpernickel...definite rye presence here. Surprisingly mellow on the booziness, for a higher ABV brew, medium body, and somewhat slick in the mouthfeel. Nice one overall.
