Sixpoint Brewery
New York, United States

Style: Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.30%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
For our very limited release Imperial Otis, we souped up our oatmeal stout recipe and aged it in Willet Bourbon barrels for four months. We then blended it with a small amount of un-oaked Imperial Otis to find balance. It pours black with an extra-dark brown head and is 10.3% ABV.

As with any beer, the tasting experience varies from person to person, and especially so with a beer as rich and complex as Imperial Otis. When you try it, let us know what aromas and tastes you got from the beer. For us, it was full roast malt flavor, delightful oat creaminess, and notes of coconut and vanilla from the aging process. With all the rich malt and barrel-aged notes, the nose reminds us of a coconut macaroon dipped in dark chocolate.

The beer offers bourbon up front with lots of milk chocolate and vanilla. Sweet caramel and bourbon go throughout the beer.

A great barrel aged stout and the best beer from Sixpoint. Packaging this would be a great and put an incredible barrel aged stout on NY's map.

From 04/01/14 notes. Had on tap at The Jeffrey in NYC. 12oz pour in a snifter for $8.

a - Pours a deep dark brown color, almost black, with one inch of very dark tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Looks great.

s - Smells of roasted malts, sweet chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oak, cream, coconut, dark chocolate, and burnt malts. Nice mix of sweet milk chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon, though the bourbon isn't too strong. Pretty good.

t - Tastes of roasted malts, bourbon, sweet chocolate, caramel malts , toasted malts, dark chocolate, vanilla, toffee, oak, and cream. The taste is great; more bourbon though it doesn't dominate, and lots of chocolate, vanilla, and caramel. I like it a lot.

m - Medium to full body and moderate carbonation. Tiniest bit of heat from the bourbon, smooth and creamy overall. Great mouthfeel, easy to drink.

o - Overall I like the normal version of this one but think this is even better. It is blended of bourbon BA Otis and non-BA Otis I believe, and I think it helps as it isn't a bourbon bomb and is still easy to drink. Would recommend checking out, especially if you like the normal Otis.

Dark black but very clear brew, topped by a large, light, fluffy tan head. Retention is incredible. Not much lacing to note.

Big bourbon and chocolate aroma - incredible blend of chocolate, vanilla, coconut, and oak. Roastier elements of the barley malt linger just behind the stronger notes.

Flavor hits with far more dark fruit and overall roast than the aroma foretold. Decent amount of chocolate and oatmeal, and a nice overall barrel character - sweet bourbon, lots of oak, tannin, and hints of vanilla and coconut. Fairly subdued barrel notes.

Medium overall body, slightly thin for the style. Very drinkable and smooth, with just a tiny bite. Growing heat on the back end.

This is very good and tasty. It's not one of the bigger BA stouts; it retains the drinkability of a more traditional oatmeal stout, while adding barrel characteristics as an additive, vice substitute, for flavor.

Big bourbon fans will probably want a stronger representation from the barrel in a beer like this, but it's a very tasty brew overall.

Had it once and didn't dig it- the second time around I loved it. Very bourbon-y but balanced, great aroma and mouthfeel. Drinkable, not boozy.

A: Dense black, but not oily or viscous. Spongy mocha head with limited retention, and some spotty lacing.

S: Fruity cacao, vanilla, and coconut. Reminiscent of a birthday cake. Seductive blend.

M: Med body, surprisingly light and thin. Has some twang. Creaminess takes time to develop.

T: Smooth oakiness and a light char. Vanilla bean and roasted grain. Mild espresso notes. Has a tart fruitiness. Chocolate and toasted coconut. Good dessert beer. Yould be great to match with a tiramisu.
