12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and toasted brown bread; with light nuttiness, coffee, smoke, dark fruit, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and toasted brown bread; with light nuttiness, coffee, smoke, dark fruit, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Light herbal hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and toasted brown bread, and hebral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Lightly drying from roast/hop notes as well. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, fairly creamy/grainy, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.8%. Overall this is a very solid English porter style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A pleasantly enjoyable offering.

A - Nice head, thin legs and lace.

S - There isn't much of a nose here surprisingly.

T - Deep roast, slight bitter from grain blends nicely with light hops level. A burgundy character is in evidence.

M - Nice carbonation and smooth mouthfeel, with a lingering bitterness on the tongue.

O - A very pleasant porter. One of the best Schmohz had to offer on my visit.

12 oz bottle

Not a lot of head; typically dark brown to almost black color - maybe a bit too dark. Decent smell and taste. On the whole this beer is exactly average for the style - nice chocolate nose with a bitter dark chocolate taste on the finish. Nothing too big, deep, or complex, but nice to drink for certain. Not a bad beer, just not special.

This robust english porter was from a Michigan road trip I took a month or two ago. 12 oz into my New Belgium snifter.

Looks nice, a deep brown, almost black color with a ring of tan foam.

Smell is decent. Nice rich chocolate and coffee notes, plus a little nuttiness.

Taste is aweful. Some stale coffee, a touch of chocolate, and some nuttiness is dominated by an acrid taste. Not metallic or sour, just really wacky bitter and acidic. Eww.

Mouthfeel is really watery. Perhaps the wateriest porter I've ever had. Huge carbonation distracts from tasting the beer not the fizz.

The weird amaroidial taste ruins what could have been a decent beer judging on the way the roast of the malt smelled.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Thin light brown head just manages to cover the surface of the beer. No lacing. Black body.

Smell: Coffee and molasses.

Taste: More coffee characteristics. Has a bit of smokiness. There's more going on in the taste than there was in the smell, but it's still a little lackluster.

There's a lot of great porters out there and this one falls a little short.

A very dark brown color pour with a smallshort lasting light tan cap, medium carbonation , some spotty lacing . Aroma of bakers chocolat , roasty grain , with hints of coffee and butterschotch or maybe toffee, faint smokey notes . Flavor is earthy and roasty , dark chocolate and a little coffee , hints of wood smoke and toffee in the long lightly bitter finish , a little watery at times in flavor and mouthfeel but at 4.8% ABV I would expect this , smooth mouthfeel, I would have to call this very sessionable and a nice light dark choice to pair with meals . I tend to favor my porters a little more robust , slightly higer ABV but this was a darn good six pack and I will buy this again . Nice to see Schmohz here im my home town finally . NIce work guys .

This is the best beer of the brewery so far. Really dark in color with only a tinge of red when held to light. Nice tan head, no lacing though. Smell is on the weak side but I get some toasty notes. There's a really robust mouthfeel here with a medium thick body. Nice malt complexity with roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and some toasty grain underneath. There seems to be spicy hops in towards the finish that adds a nice dimension to this. Slightly chalky finish with a lingering toasty flavor. Upfront sweetness turns toastier the further I go and I can notice the transformation. Really a solid beer and quite an impressive first try from this brand new brewery.
