Love the atmosphere. The hammered copper bar is awesome in a country way...
The owner is awesome to hang with, he's hilarious..
The beer choices are amazing..
The Scottish ale is decidedly delicious. I need to stop now. But I'll be back many times.

The brewery has a dive bar type atmosphere and clientele. You feel like you're at a local dive bar but no PBR on tab. Beers are average, like C average. I think we have here a few home brewers who are trying their best but didn't bother to look into different styles than what they liked and just made a few things that all Tasted similar and hoped no one would notice. Several beers taste nothing like the style advertised. I know sometimes a IPA will be said as a IIPA, or whatever. Their IIPA tasted like an Oktoberfest. Just need to go back at the drawing board before I would come back.

Well I guess its time for someone to check in on this place. The reviews have been sketchy and sparse in recent years. No one has rated this place in 2015. Well much hasn't changed. I didn't notice anything unsettling dirty. However, I had just left New Holland and Brewery Vivant. And how would you say, "I guess I left my inspector hat in the van." They did let my dog in and were more than happy to bring him a bowl of water. That was pretty darn nice. We had a couple of the HopKnockers. They were pretty harsh on the back end. But not bad for someone looking for one last beer of the evening on your way back to the Red Woof Inn. They are very close to each other. Not a bad place to stay on a beer tour of GR if you are bringing a pet. I think it was $125 for the night. Overall, not bad, not great. Just leave your expectations at the door. Ping Pong, Waylon Jennings on the juke box, popcorn and beer; In some circles it doesn't get much better than that.

This was the absolute worse experience I have ever had at a brewery. First off the place is absolutely filthy on the inside and it honestly feels like if a health inspector would come around that he would either be paid off or the place would be closed down until they meet certain requirements. I went around lunch time on a Saturday and there was hardly anyone in the place, the tables were dirty and the linoleum floor was dirty and stained. The bartender acted like I was inconveniencing her by asking for a beer. I visited the brewery with 3 friends and we each got a different beer. One of the beers had a medicinal sour flavor and was definitely infected. My other buddy got their cream ale which was very generic and had few redeeming qualities. I had the bone crusher stout which was mediocre and had a burnt flavor to it. The bone crusher was the best of the group and it was nothing I would re-order. I will not be returning to this brewery and I will not be recommending their beer to anyone. Very disappointing beer and very disappointing experience.

Classic small time brewery. It's not trying to be anything fancy. It's just a good place to get some decent beer and hang out. Free popcorn and pool, set yourself up with a few beers and chill. Not hard to lose a few hours without losing much of your wallet here. You can tell these guys just enjoy what they get to do everyday.

Two trips within a month’s time. Reasonable pricing on beer and growlers. Inconsistent flavor with the beer between the two visits, even among the tap mainstays (except for the Bonecrusher Stout - that was consistently delicious). Nice and quiet, great spot to stop with kids. Bring your own food friendly.

This place is pretty much what you'd want to see in a neighborhood bar. Great selection of beers, pool tables and friendly service that won't pull punches if you engage in dumb assery. The owner guy was very friendly and eager to talk up any patron. Have a bite to eat elsewhere, then swing by here for after dinner (or lunch) good times.

Great place for beer and to meet friends.

It is better every time I visit!

The staff works very hard to make sure you are served correctly and with a smile.

Owners are often in the tasting room providing service and good conversation.

The brewer is a one of a kind guy. GREAT knowledge and experience.

Because of the demand the beers rotate quickly so there is always something fresh on tap.

You can find bottles all over Michigan.

At certain time brewery tours are available and worth the price. Schmohz has one of the larger micro-brew systems in West Michigan.

The atmosphere is cozy. Cool, low key feel, nice garden area. Unique feel. How many other bars have a Michigan Tech hockey theme?

Beer quality is VERY sketchy. I've made it a point to drop by a time or two every year to give this place another chance. They just keep putting out below average beer. I haven't been alone in questioning the possibility of the bar passing off infected beers as servable.

Service has been adequate. While I can't blame servers for selling the product, I've witnessed the brewer being confronted over perceived shortfalls in his brews. Constructive questioning hasn't been welcome.

While the selection is pretty vast for the brewery's size, it lacks on much "good" beer. I've consistently enjoyed the ESB, otherwise it's a bit of a crap shoot.

Again, value would be great. 3.75 for a pint? Count me in! Then again, I've left more than 1 pint on a table as completely undrinkable. That's no great value.

I really want to like this place. I'm a huge beer homer and want to see all MI joints succeed. That said, after many disappointing visits (over the course of 5 years or more) it's time to give an honest review. After comparing their "Beer City PA" with versions from other local breweries, I've only confirmed my suspicions. It's just not worth your time or money to hit this place up while in GR. I'm sure I'll continue to give my obligatory visit every year. If things improve, I'll be sure to update. One can hope...

Schmohz was a delight. My girlfriend and I arrived at right after opening on July 5th. Chaz, one of the the brewers, was setting the place up and tending bar as the regular bartender had called in. It was ungodly hot outside and the temperature inside the pub felt great.

After a short delay during the initial setup we ordered our first of 2 flights. We selected from the experimental and non-ipa beers for this first flight. I have to say were delighted with ALL of the 6 choices purchasing six packs of 3 to bring home.

Chaze was all to happy to talk about the beer and the the regulars at the bar chimed right in with info and thoughts about their favorites. We finished our flight and ordered another including the signature IPA's as other strong flavor choices. The IPA's did not disappoint and I will say that these beers were the beers we compared all others to during the remainder of our southern Michigan beer tour.

Of the 10 breweries visited we both agree that the beers at Schmotz were the best for taste and variety/selection. No matter what you drink there is likely to be something at Schmohz for you.

We sampled most of the beers at Schmotz and chose Pickle Tink and Zingiberene for our desert beers before packing up the car and heading back into Grand Rapids proper to visit Brewery Vivant.

Now this brewery is in a strange location - an industrial park. The girl serving us ale stated they moved into this location because another brewery had been located there and they would not have to convert as much in the building to a brewery. The inside had the ramshackle appearance of not being completed. There is a pool table when you enter and a pinball machine in the corner. Also, on this particular day, the inside was entirely too hot. However, the ales were consistantly good, from the hoppy Pail ale to the malt accented ESB. The refreshing and flavorful cream ale is well worth seeking. No food served, but the brewery will have an occasional pig roast. The brewery offers its beers in growlers and six-packs. Also, my niece tells me the brewery has a very sweet pet pig named CeCe.

Our last stop of the night on the GR tour.

From the outside you would have no idea this place even exists. Once inside it looks like a pretty average townie bar. Pool tables darts and TV's up front. Small bar in the back. The selection was limited to the handful of beers they make but a good mix of styles. I settled on the barrel aged barley wine.

The server grabbed our beers and didn't make any conversation. Seemed like every one in the place was a "regular". Half the bar was watching a college hockey game with serious intensity. The BW was served in a snifter and not too cold. Which is how I like em.

Overall if I didn't know it I would have just assumed we were in some regular local bar. Not a brewery. Sometimes less pretentious isn't all that bad.

If you were led to this place blindfolded and had the blinders removed once inside you would never think there were craft brews and craft brews only on tap at the bar. This place looks like it would have PBR on tap and white trash types singing karaoke, but it has a few decent beers to offer should you be in the area. Free pool, free popcorn, and a friendly waitress/bartender add some positive points to Schmohz. Overall, the atmosphere is a different sort of vibe and the interior is simply not pleasing to the eye save for the aforementioned waitress. It seemed as though the majority of the patrons were regulars who were familiar with one another. It felt kind of like we were visiting a fraternity or club house of some sort. I can't decide whether that was a good thing or not. At any rate, it was a very unpretentious scene that could teach some of the more uppity joints around the area a thing or two.

The quality of the products offered in bottles and on pull at the taproom is generally average. A cut above standard fare. Hopknocker was a decent choice and the stout was on sale as the brewers choice of the day. Not bad beers.

The service was great. Beers were pulled and ready to drink within seconds of bellying up. The bartender was very friendly which is sometimes difficult to find these days.

The selection was decent. Most styles had a consumable representation on tap and the pricing was reasonable.

This place is a perfectly viable place to get something other than BMC. With some of the other places available around the area, it may take a bit of a back seat. It is worth a visit to see normal people enjoying better beer without any of the uppity shenanigans that may be encountered elsewhere. At least they give back the proper change, Founders waitstaff.

Atmosphere: As you walk in you get the feel of a typical dive bar that only the locals know about. Tables scattered here and there in no particular order. A small pool table, dart board, and a pinball machine against the wall. As far as a atmosphere inside the place goes, not a fan.

Quality: The beers I had were good. Started with the Hopknocker IPA which wasn't bad. I would say it was just average. Tried a little of the porter as well, and finished with their barleywine, which surprised me a little bit with how good it was.

Service: Walked straight to the bar and ordered a beer. The bar was full of people but I had a drink in my hand pretty quickly. Anytime we needed a drink we could just walk up to the bar and get one. A waitress came in later, but that was around the time we were ready to leave.

Selection: I didn't count the number of beers there were on tap, but it was probably around 8 or so. When I saw the place I figured with how small it was that it would only have four beers on tap or so, and also some bud or miller. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the tap list and no BMC.

Value: 3.75 for a pint of craft brew, not cheap, not expensive. Their barleywine was a little more expensive at 5.00, but it was one of their "specialty" beers. They also have free popcorn you can bring back to the table and munch on.

Ovarall, I would come back here. But with all the brewering companies in Grand Rapids, I wouldn't make it a priority.

Was on my way back from the east side of the state and decided to stop at Schmohz to check out the place, being that I've tried quite a few of their brews before and found them to be enjoyable.

When walking into the place, you're presented with kind of a country bar/hole in the wall bar feel, as everything seems old and outdated.Let alone other things that I won't mention here. Though there was only one other person with me at the bar, the vibe really wasn't there and seemed kind of odd.

I ended up getting an Oktoberfest, which was pretty good. Each of the beers I've tried from there from bottles and at expos have been quite well too, they do seem to know how to make their beers.

the overall service wasn't bad. there was only one person working and she was friendly as I walked in...though she seemed to get distracted when there was others walking in. I ended up only staying for a round so really didn't experience it much

They had about 11 beers on tap at the time including: Valley City Cream Ale, Treasure Chest ESB, Amber Tease Ale, Pail Ale, India Pale Ale, Hopknocker Imperial IPA, Bone Crusher Stout, Pinkle Tink Ale, Mad Tom's Robust Porter and the Oktoberfest. A pretty good selection and a little bit of something for everyone.

I didn't have anything to eat, and I'm not sure if they sold food there or if it was though elsewhere as I didn't really see a menu for anything.

the value was reasonable, a pint of beer was about 3.75 for the reg, and premiums were a little bit more.

Overall, I hate to say it but probably would stick to just drinking the bottles and beers of Schmohz at expos as the place just didn't really seem appealing to make me want to stop in again. Though if you're looking for a good beer, that alone would be the reason to stop back...

After reading some of the other reviews, this place has not changed much in the 5 or odd years it's been around. Very basic interior, games as others have mentioned. Enough seating, seating outside for smoking, with a grill and a horseshoe like game. Good variety of brews, looked like 10. Tried the Bonecrusher stout, which is a regular brew and the Schwarz, which looked like a special brew. Both quality examples. First time service was fine, 2nd time was ok. 2nd time I asked which the bartender prefered the porter or stout, he said it "depends what you're looking for". The more I think about it, I was a bit put of by this, mainly the way he said it. I know what the f a porter and a stout are, just tell me which one you prefer. Anyways, that wasn't that big of a deal I suppose, probably more a reflection of the atmosphere. I don't want to be too downer on this place. To sum it up, this is a place for local regulars. It's almost like someone created this place so they can have their friends over. A place for regulars who don't go out to normal night time entertainment establishments. Quite an odd medley of folks in here both times I've been.

Stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon before heading to Hopcat and Founders. Atmosphere was laid back and kind of industrial. No food was available except for popcorn and some pizza ($2 a slice) that looked like it had been there for days.

The girl working at the bar was really friendly and I ordered a hopknocker IPA. This beer was just average. No off flavors but nothing really impressed me. You can tell they are skimping on ingredients with this beer.

They had a big screen TV with Big Ten basketball, a pool table and a darts machine (I think that real bars should have steel tip darts).

Not a bad experience by any measure and the people were really nice, but I think a no frills place should have better beer.
