Bottle aged one year. Look is black with limited head. Smell is barrel. Some roasted malts, but mostly barrel. Taste is very barrel forward. Good amount of roastiness. Mouthfeel is fairly thin, and overcarbonated, especially for a stout. If not for the carb, this would be a very good beer, but the carbonation takes away. Plus, I tend to like my stouts a bit chewier.

Had this in an unassuming clear plastic cup.

This barrel aged version of Back Road Stout has a thin, but persistent ecru to dark brown colored cap. The black body does not exactly look imposing in a plastic cup, but I do not care because...

Holy cow the nose on this! First impression is sweet and smokey from the booze. The whiskey is nicely done: wood soaked, smokey, and only a touch of heat, not at all overwhelming or dominating the aromas. The sweet scents comprise huge brown sugar and figgy notes, some vanilla. This is incredibly enticing.

And the palate rolls right on from where the nose left off. As the beer sits mid-palate, there are big flavors of brown sugar, fig, molasses, vanilla. The whiskey hangs out at the back of the cheeks and throat: again smokey, wood soaked, even some cinnamon. What really seals the deal is that the whiskey does not control the palate. It is used as a tool to let the sweet and mellow flavors develop. This twelve ounce pour has been drained entirely too quickly.

The body on this barrel aged offering is smooth and has decent heft, not sticky or really thick. For how this tastes, there could be the expectation of more pronounced stickiness and/or increased viscosity.

Loved it, I absolutely loved it. Barrel Aged Back Road Stout clocks in at a very modest 8% ABV, but the whiskey is still readily apparent without a huge burst of heat, just the way I like it. And the flavors those barrels help create with Back Road are fantastic. I highly recommend this beer.
