Millstream Iowa Pale AleMillstream Iowa Pale Ale

Brewed by:
Millstream Brewing Company
Iowa, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
India Pale Ale's are turning into hoppy monsters, but our Iowa Pale Ale is more mild and about balance. It has enough bitterness to match the maltiness provided by the pale malt base and gets its citrus zing from extensive dry-hopping with Cascade hops. This beer was first made in a few small batches as a summer seasonal in 2003. The response was so incredibly positive that is has worked its way into a year round beer and became a favorite to many.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle bought in West Branch, IA. No date on bottle, a Jan-Dec scale on the side of the label was unmarked. Puored into a paper cup (all I had). Lots of foam, quickly dissipated. Light hop aroma. Taste of hops and some malt in the beginning, finish bitter. Light mouth feel. To me more a pale ale than an IPA.

Smooth, Citrus, with just enough bitter. A good summer beer

I poured this from a bottle into a clear teardrop glass. It pours a hazy amber color with a one finger white head. It's definitely a grapefruit taste. It's sufficiently hoppy for me. I kind of like it.

Amber colored "pale" ale, thin 1/5" white head. Malt caramel notes in the aroma, hops are hiding, disappointing.

Taste was watered down pale ale, not bitter enough, not hoppy enough. Might as well be an alt light. Some burton yeast kind of earthen ground notes to it.

Super boring pale ale, more akin to a blonde ale for my money's worth.

I think this beer is ok considering the ABV I kept my expectations a little lower but I thought the taste and aroma stood out well. It has murky copper color to it with good head retention. It had sweeter taste to it and only in the mouth feel did it seemed a little watered down with a little bitterness left over. I think this beer is good for someone who is looking for something that is a little more drinkable and still has some punch to it

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass, there is no "best by" date notched in the area reserved for it.

APPEARANCE: pours a beautiful copper color with some sediments suspended, one-finger off-white head that slowly dissipated until a thin layer of small bubbles remained, there is significant lacing on the glass, lightly carbonated.

SMELL: sweet caramel, bread and some flowery citrus notes, there is a slight metallic note as well.

TASTE: initially sweet caramel and bread then a bitter, metallic hop profile that reminds me more of an English pale ale than an American IPA.

PALATE: medium body and very lightly carbonated.

OVERALL: this was a good looking beer that smelled all right but, I was disappointed in every other aspect, this is really an English pale ale in my opinion, I did not enjoy the metallic hop profile and thought the beer was a little flat, I would not buy this again.

Smooth, soft texture with a light mouth weight. Nice, easy hops and goes down easy. Definitely worth a try. Really enjoyed this one.

Millstream Iowa Pale Ale, Millstream Brewing Company, Amana, Iowa.

Lightly hazed, reddish-amber coloring, snowy-white cap of foam, lingers at a good 1/4 inch.

Moderately hoppy aroma, earthy English hops, none of the American citrus notes, keeping pace with warm, bready notes. Already, I can tell this will be a pale ale of balance with plenty of malt in the game.

Taste: there it is, nice little hoppy bitter buzz right up front, softly fading away, and blending in with the malt. Flush with fruit, mixed with juicy malt. Hops still active, but never loud or abrasive. Just an average, easy-drinking, tasty pale ale. Not thrilling, but doesn't need to be. Just a drinker. Just the thing after some heavy corn husking

Appearance : This beer pours a honey-cider color with a nice amount of head forming even in the small glass I'm using to drink it from. The opacity is about 70%.

Smell : While not super loud, I'm nosing some good caramel and biscuit notes, with honey and pine bark. Wraps up with citrus rind and more caramel.

Taste : Very biscuit-y, lots of flaky crust and caramel; some roasted malts with a straight shot of citrus pine coming up behind it. The citrus is fleshy, not acidic, and there are no off-flavors like onions or garlic present. I like that this beer is malt first, hop second. It lays the framework for the rest of the ale making it more palatable. It ends on the bitter character of citrus fruits.

Feel : Carbonation out front, though moderate. It's slightly creamy, ending woody and dry.

Overall : It's actually not a bad pale ale, I like the malt-forward running start. I'm not a fan of India pale ales in general but I review them because I feel most every beer deserves a fair shot. This is a decent IPA with some good things going for it - just don't expect to be swept off your feet by it.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a clear mug.

Appearance: medium orange hue with a moderate haze and a finger of pillowy ivory foam with just a little hint of an orange cast. Not bad.

Smell: malt is lightly sweet and a dash biscuity; hops are earthy and a bit dank. Overall very autumnal.

Taste: sweeter and a little less biscuity than the aroma; the malt here is rather bready. Hops are earthy, citrusy and dank with a bit of a harsh bitterness. It's OK.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess for the style.

Overall: it's a decent IPA but it doesn't grab me. Perhaps the harshness of the bitterness? Hard to say.
