Millstream Brewing Company
Iowa, United States

Style: Vienna Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.90%

Notes / Commercial Description:
The name Schild Brau means essentially 'Schild Beer' in German. This is our flagship brew, a microbrew done in the style of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna Lager.

Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness.

Presentation: 12 oz short brown with a twist off cap, no freshness date to be found.

Appearance: Garnet red with a fluffy bubbly head that crawls up the glass.

Smell: Clean with a caramel candy like sweetness.

Taste: Incredibly smooth, quite clean and a little chewy with a tasty malt flavour all throughout the mouth. The medium body holds the malt well with a mild toasted flavour, hops leave only a small bite though still enough to add a touch of balance. More grain and malt lead the tastebuds in the finish ... nice mix of grain and residual sweetness.

Notes: Reminiscent of the Oktoberfest style this turns out to be a great amber lager ... very drinkable and very satisfying. A proud beer to have brewed.

Pours a nice dark amber color, transparent, and had a white head; but the fact the head left with no trace brings it down. Smell of caramel and toffee. Sweet caramel greets your taste buds, paired with some toffee and a soft, earthy bitterness to even things out. Really well balanced taste. Higher carbonation than average, medium bodied. After finishing up a test, this one hit the spot nicely. I'd have another, but unfortunately this is the only one I had.
Worth a try.

Dull deep-amber in color with a semi-lasting layer of rocky off-white head. Sparse glass lacing. Aromas are sorta tough to discern. Roasted malts, some sweetness, and a dash of fruity hops. Flavor also is subdued. Nothing memorable. Some caramel sweetness that only briefly steps aside to let any sort of brisk bittering hops to see the spotlight. Odd undertow of a sourness that I get later on, and it lasts well into the aftertaste. Thin and not overly drinkable. Perhaps I got a bad bottle?

Pours brilliant amber with a slight brown tint under a thin, white foam collar. Starts with a light malty sweetness and finishes with a mild bitter hop accent. A clean smooth, flavorful easy to drink amber lager.

Pours a good amber color, with good clarity, minimal head, this looks the part of a Vienna Lager. Aroma was lacking that vienna malt sweetness to look for in this style. Wasn't bad put off bad, but was just, meh.

Taste, smooth and the malt content seems to be just right, thin enough, yet chewy. Would have liked to have seen just a little more hop zest, 20-30 ibu, instead of what tastes like 10-15. But its probably more in the tradition of a good Vienna or oktoberfest. Plenty of that nutty caramel thing going on in the mouthfeel, but it just is too middle of the road for me.

This beer pours a golden orange color, with a very tiny white head. The head fades very fast, leaving no lace.

This beer has a very mild aroma. It smells sweet and malty, and slightly caramel like. That is pretty much it. Not much going on here.

This beer tastes much like it smells. Not much going on. A very mild caramel malt flavor.

This beer is crisp and refreshing. It goes down smooth, leaving a slightly caramel like aftertaste.

This beer would probably make a great sessoin beer. It is low in alcohol, and the flavor is very mild.

Overall: Thanks to BuckeyeNation for generously giving me this beer. It was a good beer, but the flavor was pretty mild and slightly boring. Definately not bad though.

Pretty good beer. I was surprised that it's brewed in Iowa - the label doesn't seem to fit that. Interesting name as well.

Nice amber color, good taste and feel. A little bit of a bitter aftertaste. Almost no head at all when pouring. It's worth a taste.

On tap at the cedar rapids airport (it's nice to see craft beer on tap in such a small airport.) Supper clear copper colored beer with a slightly fluffed, off white head. There is some sudsy stickiness but it dissipates quickly and ends up as a thin coating across the top of the brew.

Smell is almost non-existent. There is a mild sweetness but not much of anything else, although it is pleasant.

The taste is of muted grains and has a light coppery metallic flavor which is reinforced by a delicate bitterness. That description is better then it really deserves because this beer is not just mild it's a borderline ghost. If it wasn't for the carbonation I doubt it would have any taste.

The mouthfeel is not very refreshing and is kind of rough. I do like the carbonation because it redeems this brew from being almost undrinkable. This one could use more of everything, more hops, grain, nose, flavor, you name it. One word can describe it... boring. It's a girlfriend beer.

Tried in the Amana Colonies at the brewery!

Pours dark amber and slightly hazy with a thick creamy off-white head.

It has an aroma is very clean. Malty, caramel and frutiy tones too it.

Tastes tangy, nutty, fruity, with a big malt kick.

Has a light feel in your mouth with a full flavor.

I would drink it again!

Thanks again, Benny.

Actually a deep, clear medium red rather than amber, this beer has a nicely sized frothy head with big, loose bubbling that tightens up to a stiff cream that settles down to just less than a finger in height, retains itself well as it falls but very slowly, and leaves good deposits of patching on the glass.
Lots of malts in this one are toasty, primarily, balanced by grass. Even with a light touch of earth and the toasty dryness, It's a bit too sweet, as a whole lot of caramel shows up and dominates.
It's toasty and the malts make a good show, lots of crust and caramel that, unlike in the nose, isn't overwhelming. There's a light edition of grassy hops with a little bite of spiciness to it as well. Grains come on a little too strongly as it goes. All in all, it's a pretty good showing.
The body is medium, maybe on the lighter side but not too thin. Crispness is just active enough.

A pleasing orange-brown color that pours with fine carbonation and yields a thin head.

The aroma holds a light, fruity sweetness.

I like the taste and finish of this brew.

The body held up to my pizza and green peppers well.
At times, that is an acid test for me.

Will grab this again.

Never tried this beer when I actually lived in Iowa (a whole 25 years), and now it comes to me via my beer-loving brother (BA name mnwags). Thanks bro!

The head lasts only a few seconds, the bubbles are plenty and the color is a clear, glassy amber.

Mild aroma brings caramel, brown sugar and even faint pumpkin to the nose. I really had to sniff hard to get anything out of the aroma here. But what is there I like.

Flavor is strong on the malts, plenty of caramel, toffee and just a little nutmeg. This is helped along by a wonderfully creamy mouthfeel, the best aspect of this beer. It hangs in there like melted butter and never thins.

Easy to like, hard to deeply love, but a good, sensible, worthy offering. Marzen/Oktoberfest purists may have some issues, but I'd never kick this out of my festival mug.

Nice, deep golden amber. Foamy off white head, shows moderate retention and lacing.
Hardly anything on the nose. Tiny malt sweetness.
Taste is almost as small. Diluted carmel sweetness. Hints of butter. A touch of slightly spicy hops in the finish. Everything here is fine and dandy, but just not enough. Simple and quaffable. But lacks any real character. Those two sentances could label Millstream.
Mouthfeel is creamy yet vacant of substance. Easy to drink.

I am rating this on the heels of several Great Lakes Eliot Ness' premier Vienna. This one pales greatly in comparison. Not bad, but well short of stellar.

Hallertau hops and a most decent lager. Quaffable and satisfying. A medium yellow colour, minimum white head. Neutral aroma, medium mouthfeel. Decent beer all around,I could have one or two. Nothing edgy or really tasty though. Appropriate carbonation.

I like Millstream. The brewery couldn't be less pretentious; you'll never see a double IPA coming out of a Millstream, but it simply produces great basic beers. This is an unusual Marzen, it comes off a lot more like an amber. It is amber in color with a 1/2 inch head. The flavor's tart, with hints of apple and plenty of toasted malt. It is easy drinking and simply a great beer to have in the fridge. Cheers to Millstream!

12oz single, must have come from Brennan's on a cheese/sausage/wierd beer run

appearance: poured into pint glass...bright amber body, small tan head with light lacing left behind...pretty standard

smell: sweet malt body, quite nutty, caramel, sweet apple/pear, a touch bready

taste: initial main taste a sweet and nutty flavour, sweet malt and grain form the body, light caramel...good but rather standard

mouthfeel: medium body, quite smooth

drinkability: pretty good

Poured into a mug.

A: Pours a clear ruby-brown color with a thin, fizzy white head that dissipated rather quickly.

S: Rich caramel and toffee aromas with an underlying nutty character. Big malty sweetness with nary a whiff of hops to be found.

T: Pretty nice toasty notes to support the aforementioned malty character. Pleasant tasting, but not particularly deep. I love the tastes it has going on, but I wish there were more.

M: Lighter side of a medium body and lower carbonation. This beer seems to strive for a rich, chewy feel, but never quite gets there. Finishes pretty clean.

D: Easy drinking with this one. A maltier all-night beer for some.

Not a bad start, but this beer seems like its crying out to be something more. I enjoyed the bottle I had, but I wouldn't fancy a second.
