Style: Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The 'oatmeal' in the name is due the 5% oatmeal in the the grist of this brew. Oats give beer a real thick mouthfeel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied & smooth stout, this beer is for you!

Tasted in a Spiegelau stout glass from a 12 fl oz bottle on December 9, 2017. Look is nearly black brown with a thin tan head and no lacing. Smell and taste is mostly coffee. Feel is thick and full in body.

this one wasnt great. the flavors are there for me for the most part, but it seems like the overall quality is a little low. this has no reason to pour dead flat from the bottle, none at all, and yet here it is in front of me, almost entirely still, what gives? it looks thick enough and is nice and matte black, but where is the life? some bitter roasted malt to this, its intense for a second in both nose and taste, with a burnt coffee vibe and a little bit of earthy dark cocoa. i really like the flavor and texture provided by the oats, but the lack of carbonation is a real issue for me, there is nothing to propel this beer forward, wash away the bitterness, and keep it working with food, so it sort of stagnates for me, which is unflattering, and its worse as it warms. the dark malt flavor is good, and there is even a bittering hop complexion to this, but the saggy mouthfeel ends up being a deal breaker for me. i had higher hopes for this, finding it on a bottle list at a fine dining establishment, you would expect more in a place where everything else is so attentively curated...

A - 95% head, semi transparent, poured an ounce and it foamed the entire glass.
S - stout-like... ?
T - couldn't tell, carbonation was burning my mouth
M - Ouch. Carbonation overload.
O - Dumped it after 1 sip. Nuff said.

Almost black color, malt, hop, almost bread like aroma.taste starts sweet and almost creamy but ends on a bitter hoppy note. A nice beer that was more complex than i thought it would be. If i could find it again i would get a few more bottles

Sampling a cellar temp 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. The beer pours a dark cola brown hue with frothy brown head of 1 cm that fades to nothing almost immediately after the pour.
Aroma is coffee grinds and roasted malt with a little bit of a burnt astringent scent as well. No hops nor booze at this step in the sampling.
First sip reveals an average body with fine prickly carbonation and a little bit of a watery texture. the beer is much less robust physically than I expected as an oatmeal stout.
Flavor is similar to what was advertised by the nose. I get some roasted malt and coffee grounds, also a little dark chocolate in the background and this flavor lingers on the finish. I dont get any hop character nor any booze on this beer. It drinks very easy but could use a little more body to boost the overall experience. Im glad to have tried it but wouldnt chase this one down the next time I am looking for an oatmeal stout.

A murky, opaque brown brew with a quickly fading head. The aroma is filled with maltiness and some roasted coffee notes. There is a sweetness and oat component to the aroma as well. The flavor is sweet and oaty with some roasted malt and chocolate. The beer is lightly carbed and leaves no lacing. The body is a bit light and more reminiscent of a porter. This is a nice tasty beer that reminds me of a traditional porter.

Overall a very solid beer. I was so happy to go back to Iowa and taste a great home grown dark beer. This beer is very good on tap and fresh from the bottle. Enjoy it with a big ass pork tenderloin sandwich and some potato wedges with sour cream! -Never settle.

Appearance - Pours jet black like oil not much head even with a pretty aggressive pour. There is not much lacing either.

Smell - Dark chocolate, oatmeal, bitter roasted coffee, Rich malts.

Taste - Roasted malts, bitter coffee grounds, dark chocolate, oatmeal.

Feel - Pretty thin feel, medium body and pretty bitter.

Overall - A decent beer but it is thin for an Oatmeal stout I did not like that, little too bitter.

L; Black in color, but pours very thin looking with an ultra-fizzy head that disappears faster than it came about. Really a quick ghost of carbonation if I've ever seen one.

S: Dark and roasty. It's aroma is pretty solid.

T: Terrible. Tastes slightly of roasted malts and a little more of hard water.

F; Also terrible. This may be the thinnest, lightest bodied stout I have ever drank in my life.

O: Pretty bad. Really one of the worst stout's I have ever had. Their only saving grace on this one would be to call it "bud light with stout flavors". It's thin, it's fairly crisp, which both make for easy drinking... but my grandmother could probably make a better stout in a blender that doesn't work.

I have drain-poured less than 5 beers in my lifetime. This is one of them.
