Pours a three finger white head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Crystal clear amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Clove and citrus nose, flavor is wheat bread and clove. Cheap at $1.17 for a 12oz bottle from Trader Joe's Nashua, NH

Look-This hefe pours a brilliant orange-gold with amber hues and plenty of haze. You can’t even see through it at all. The color is reminiscent of warm apple cider. The head is thin, white, and bready.

Smell-Its aroma is rich and creamy and is similar to baked apple pie. The yeast esters are strong and are fruity like apple and banana.

Taste-The banana esters laced with plentiful apple give it a fruity cider-like flavor. I’d say that apple is the most prominent flavor. The mouthfeel is somewhere between light and medium-bodied and leaves a sticky-sweet apple coating on the tongue.

Overall-It is a refreshing beer and is packed with flavor, but is a bit sweet for my preference. If you are into that then you’ll like this fruity hefe.

With an opaque straight straw color, it boasts creamy wheat with minor yeast notes, subtlety sharp lemon that gets stronger with time and a slight metallic tinge. The carbonation has that bite that takes some getting used to, but it mellows out with time. While this is a decent hefeweizen, I highly recommend Karl Strauss’ Hefeweizen and La Cumbre’s A Slice of Hefen!

Another darker than average appearance, this time for a hefe. Aroma of wheat and clove, yeast doesn't seem American.

Taste seems to have a lot of wheat providing a gritty, earthy experience. Mild banana notes. As far as hefes go, this is traditional and affordable. Nothing to dislike here.

Bought a 6-pack from Trader Joe's in Houston labeled "Josephsbrau Hefeweizen". 6er cost $6 before tax! Never tried a Trader Joe's brew before, but here we go. Bottle to weizen glass.

A: This is a very interesting-looking Hef. It is darker/browner than you would expect, which isn't terribly attractive, but does have some of the light red hues that you see in the great Hefs. It's totally cloudy and not clear at all, which is big for me in a Hef. Minimal head and lacing, unfortunately.

S: Strong smell of yeast, wheat, sweetness and spice. Well done.

T: Taste follows suit with the yeast and wheat taking center stage. Reminds me of Karbach Weisse-Verse in the way it pulls off the bubblegum/bannana act, and that's a good thing. Little to no citrus/orange flavor, which is also just fine. Significant spice is present as well. Not lacking at all in flavor by Hef standards, which is again big for me because there is nothing worse than a watery Hef.

F: Disappointing mouthfeel. Not frothy enough, rather ordinary.

O: Definitely an above-average Hef with fairly robust flavor. Considering the low cost and the fact that it's brewed by a grocery store halfway across the country, I consider that an accomplishment. Well done!

Wonderful domestic hefe with all the complexity from the yeast used in it's Bavarian cousins brews. I knew trader joe's wouldn't disappoint and it didn't, also was 1.25 a bottle which is nearly half the price of its domestic wheat competitors. Similar to mother earths honcho but with a little more fruit and less mouth feel, however it's 40% less expensive and 90% as good.

very hazy on the pour. scent is pretty awesome - nanner, bubblegum, some spices. Taste doesnt quite live up to the smell but the banna/bubblegum taste is pretty interesting. Overall, pretty good beer!

weird thing is ive also tried this and only gotten apple and cloyingly sweet grain notes so not really sure what to think.

So, there's a Trader Joe's right around the corner, and I've seen the house brand. Hadn't bought it before now because, well, Two-Buck Chuck lingers on the memory. (Then again, who knows, it's been years ...) After a little research—all the while trying not to laugh at the must-have-been-tongue-in-cheek yo-sefs-broy branding—I decided to try three varieties. Second up, the Hefeweizen.

Short and sweet: it's an non-roasted version of their dunkelweisen. For me, that means the flavors make for a bit better complement. If you like banana bread made with underripe bananas—and the peel—you'll love this.

Hazy gold with four fingers of off white head. Good amount of lace.
Smell is typical Hefe. Spice bubblegum clove banana citrus. To me the combination of those elements pretty much describes a week old gym sock.
Taste is less bold and more drinkable that the smell would indicate. Smooth nice flavors with just the right carbonation.
Mouthfeel is medium and finishes slightly wet and sweet.
Overall this would be a good introductory Hefeweizen. I enjoyed quite a bit for a style I don't seek out often.

Not too bad. I am not a major fan of this style, but this particular one was pretty palatable and refreshing. The flavor wasn't very strong so this drank more like a lager than anything, but was stilla nice beer to have with some tailgate food.

Pours a cloudy orange/yellow with a large white head. The head reduces down much thinner after a few minutes, not quite what I'd call lacing, just a thin head.

Lot of smell here. Sweet malt, banana, citrus, and a hint of clove.

Seems a bit strong on the citrus at first, then it mellows out a bit and can pick up hints of banana, but it's a bit subtle. There is some spicy clove at the finish, plus the lingering citrus.

Feel is ok, about average for this style.

Basically an average wheat beer. Nothing really bad about it, but nothing really outstanding either. The banana needs to be dialed up a bit more and the citrus cut back, but it does go down easy, and would be a good beer for a hot day.

this is a below average Hefe compared to the big dogs. That being said it was fairly decent considering this is a Trader Joes brand beer. Was worth a try and had a decent resemblance of a traditional Bavarian style Hefe.

Dark gold in color with a fingernail of off white covering half of the top. Hazy complexion is present with vigorous carbonation bubbles erupting from within. The aroma is strong with banana and a hint of wheat. I taste pale wheat and and sweet overripe banana. The mouth while overly carbonated tastes thin and flat.

Poured from a bottle with a best by date of 2/1/15; into a Samuel Adam's perfect pint.
Appearance - a very cloudy dark yellow with a thick, white head that quickly recedes. Lacing is decent.
Smell - ripe fruit, banana bread, Carmel candy!
Taste - bubble gum, banana bread and citrus!
Feel - light and creamy body, mellow and flavorful!
Overall - wow, I'm surprised by how good this beer actually is!

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75

Appearance - Pours a cloudy, dirty orange color with a white finger width head. Sub-par retention leads to a thin, broken layer of surface suds. Virtually no lacing.

Smell - Mostly banana on the nose, with hints of bubblegum and very faint clove spice.

Taste - Follows the nose for the most part, with banana being at the forefront to begin and in the finish. More clove than the nose would indicate, giving a decent spice kick that hits about mid-taste. Bubblegum is hard to find, but traces come through in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Light to medium body with moderate, tingly carbonation. Goes down smooth and easy.

Overall - On the grand scale of hefes, this isn't particularly noteworthy, but I've certainly had worse. It does well enough to satiate my hefe cravings, and at $5.99/sixer it's hard to pass on. Another good bargain beer from Trader Joe's.

Serving: Bottle, from the bottle
Served: 19 September 2014

Appearance: Unfortunately I had this one from the bottle since I was at a party. I love the rebranding for all the "Joseph's Brau" products though- they really came up with something classy and minimal. Now, hopefully the beer can be as pretty as the labeling. I'll have to try this one again to find out. 3.5/5

Smell: Smells sweet with banana esters. 3.75/5

Taste: Wow, a lot more robust than I was expecting, considering this is a Trader Joe's branded beer. The flavor is nice and full, though definitely non-standard compared to the German exemplars of the style. The beer is very strong in banana flavors and some spiciness, which makes it considerably less smooth than many other weissbiere. Nonetheless, kudos for making a flavorful beer at this price point. 3.75/5

Feel: Really highly carbonated and kind of edgy. I don't get a lot of the smoothness that is more common to European versions of this style. 3.25/5

Overall: A really solid hefeweizen for the price. Nothing gimmicky or weird about this one, and it ranks within the top 20 for American brewed hefeweizen. Nice robust flavors, but too banana-y for my liking. I'd definitely get this for myself though if I was serving large numbers of guests and wanted a cheap beer and a variety of styles. Would recommend as a party beer, and wouldn't turn away from if offered. Great for what it is. 3.5/5

Tasted 10 July 2014.

Pours a cloudy medium orange. Two fingers of white head, good retention and decent lacing. Odd color for a hefeweizen, though.

Smell is over-the-top spicy. It's not like the clovey esters from yeast, it's like they dumped cloves into it to make it smell like this. I can barely detect anything else, save a touch of fruit.

Taste is better, more balanced. But it still has an air of artificiality. It's got some banana, some clove, and some high-in-the-nose bite. Not bad.

Feel is okay. A little on the flat side, and lacking the fluffy quality I want from wheat-heavy beers.

This drinks like an imitation of the style, rather than a hefeweizen itself. It's a decent imitation, but the true colors shine through.

12oz : weizen glass

Pours a hazy, golden orange with a foamy, off white head, decent retention.

Phenolic, cloves, with fruity, light banana esters.

More of the same in the taste. Clove and banana, estery friuit.

Medium+ body, foamy carbonation.

Nothing fancy, just a solid, well done Hefeweizen. And a steal for the price.

Appearance
Thick off white head. Lots of fizzy bubbles. Decent retention. Minimal lacing. Cloudy, light golden body. Thick carbonation.

Smell
Banana, butterscotch, traditional, yeasty, heff aroma. Moderate strength.

Taste
If you like heffs this is very good. If you are not crazy about the style then something like Erdinger is much nicer. Bready. Yeasty. Banana. Butterscotch. Dry, lingering bitterness on the finish. In your face heff flavor. Only somewhat smooth to drink. Heavy.

Mouthfeel
Somewhere between medium and heavy bodied. Dry, slightly lemony, bitterness lingers. Rich, wheaty, yeeasty beer.

Overall
A pretty good heff that is very affordable over at Trader Joe's. Strong heff flavors. A good quality, economy heff for those who really like the style. Can be somewhat off-putting to those not in love with the style.

Trader Joe's Bavarian Style Hefeweizen has an extremely thick, off-white head, a cloudy (and, it gets much cloudier when the bottom contents are swished and poured in), fiercely bubbly, golden appearance, and heavy lacing left behind on the glass. The aroma of pungent, sweet, spiced cake, and the flavor is of wheat bread crust, spiced cake, coriander, strong cloves, lemon, sugar, background tap water, and yeast. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and soft, and Trader Joe's Bavarian Style Hefeweizen finishes semi-dry and exceptionally drinkable.

I really have nothing to say that has not been said about this. Pours nice and cloudy, good carbonation, as you would expect. Smell was weak at be s t, nothing much stood out. The flavor for me was big on banana and clove, maybe a little artificial in their taste. All in all, at its price point is good a good buy, but in general, OK.

This Hefeweizen was a little darker than other Hefeweizen's that I have had before. It had a strong orange appearance and contained a lot of sediment. Overall its flavor was not as sweet as I have experienced with past Hefeweizens. Strong wheat and citrus aroma with a slight banana aftertaste.

I like this beer. It's not the very best hefe I've had, but not everyone can win the superbowl every year either.

Aroma and taste are really nice, banana heavy, cloves and wheat, yeast and spices.

It's pretty thick like a hefe should be, but also remains highly drinkable and enjoyable.

This is number two of my sampling of Trader Joe's beers. A trip there yielded me 15 new beers to try! (first time I'd been there in this city). The hardest decision is which one to try next!

I got this beer in a mystery pack from Trader Joe's (you have to buy one if you never have). This was the first beer I pulled out.

A-Since I am drinking this out of the bottle I reviewed the design. Decent artwork on the beer but I am not overly in love with it.

S-The smell is inviting and pretty strong for a wheat beer.

T-The taste is delicious and reminds me a summer day.

M-A little weak, but we are talking about wheat beer.

O-This beer was just okay with me but did not quite hit the mark I was hoping for.

Appearance: Pours golden-orange, a touch dull if I had to say. Head dissipates to .5 cm quickly and sits at that level.
Smell: Pleasant, typical Hefeweizen smell. Slight clove, leans banana, but not overwhelming. Probably a middle temperature fermentation.
Taste: Like some others mentioned, there is a slight taste of something metallic or coppery. Also, I'd say it is a tad bitter compared to better examples of the style. Otherwise, this has decent taste, which is true-to-style.
Mouth-feel: Good. It is a pretty much as you'd expect from the style. Lingering due to heavier mouthfeel than a lager for instance.
Overall: For the price, it is not bad. If you're looking for the best example of a Hefeweizen, you'd do yourself a disservice by choosing this one. If you're looking for something that is decent and priced well, this one is fine. It's kind if like wanting pizza from your favorite pizza place and settling for Papa John's. It's fine, but makes me wish I were having a better one.
