Great price for a pretty good hefeweizen. The beer looks alright, perhaps a bit dark, but good. The smell is ripe banana without enough clove presence. The wheat smells a bit thin, somehow. It's just not quite as refreshing and fresh as the top German entries in the style. The flavor is similar with a bit of alcohol around the edges. The feel is a little gummy to me. There's something not quite right, in my opinion. It's still a very drinkable wheat beer, refreshing and slightly tart. At any rate, at $6 or so for a six pack, it's a good deal.

Presentation: Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a small weizen glass. label depicts a top down view of some European row houses and is similar to other TJ labels. Short description of the style on the back. 5.3% ABV and 12 IBU. Batch number info printed on back label, but it is not clear as to what it means.

Appearance: Initially pours with 2.5 fingers of light tan head. This settles rather quickly for a hefe, eventually dropping to essentially nothing and leaving no lacing behind. Beer is slightly cloudy at first, but plenty of yeast sediment form the bottom of the bottle makes it an almost muddy brown/orange. Some sediment left in the bottle.

Smell: Strong notes of bananas and clove with strong wheat twang in the finish.

Taste: Sharp wheat twang upfront with a mild banana middle. Hints of apricot in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Average carbonation level. Body is okay.

Drinkability: A good representation of the style. The only significant flaw is the utter lack of head retention coupled with no lacing.

Bright golden color, only slightly cloudy. Pours with a foamy and persistent head, with very little lacing. Smells bready, and has a very yeasty and citrusy (almost sour) flavor. Feels thin in the mouth for a hefeweizen. Drinkable, but nothing special. Don't go out of your way to find it, but don't feel bad about trying it.

Poured to a hefeweizen glass. A dense creamy head bubbles and pops, standing firm at half an inch thick for a while. Color is a dark mustard orange-yellow, and nicely clouded from the pour-swirl-pour.

Interesting aroma. Quite citrus-fruity, recalling Fruit Loops or Fruity Pebbles cereals, and the malt/yeast cooperation veers toward a lively Belgian character. Banana is here but less pronounced than in true German hefes. An interesting aroma, somewhat left-of-center yet not totally off the style map. I can dig it.

Flavor keeps bringing on citrus/tropical fruits, the banana being only one of them. Softness of the wheat complements the hefe yeast, although the malt isn't as gentle in character as a real German hefe, while the yeast isn't quite as pronounced and forward as it could be. Still, it edges pretty closely to the real deal, much more successfully than a lot of U.S. versions of this style--which usually totally fail. Sourdough bread in the finish.

Way too carbonated. I was hoping for a creamy, soft presence to the texture, but got too much tingle instead. Not a disaster, however.

A worthy stab at the style, better than the majority of U.S. versions, but still no mindblowing facsimile of the real deal. Glad I tried it.

Pretty standard hefe contract-brewed for Trader Joes. Pours a straw, golden color with semi-thin layer of white foam. Yeast sediment was not as plentiful as expected. The nose is very nice with plenty of phenols and banana aromas. Slight traces of bubblegum and pepper come through as well. The taste is mildly sweet up front with a soft sharpness at the finish. Quite delicate overall, yet well carbonated. The mouthfeel may be a bit thin at times, but for a session beer like this, I cannot complain. Easy to drink, easy to enjoy, and cheap to boot.

Appearance is a cloudy orange..decent head with a lining on top that stays the whole way down. Lacing is there too, to some extent.

Aroma: Wheat, some slight clove and banana scent coming through, but not too much.

Taste: Yeast and bananas..cloves not too much, not much on the spice notes either...but overall its fine

Mouthfeel: Light and carbonation is okay so it does go down well

Drinkability: Good..it is a hefeweizen after all.

Wouldn't go out of my way to find this..but if its there I'll take it. Then again, I grade hefeweizens rather harshly because I've had over 20 diff. ones...many of them German

Poured the color of aged grapefruit juice, which is not always bad. It smelled like slightly soured ketchup and regular yellow mustard mixed up. The taste actually made an interesting combination to the smell, the taste of cold, carbonated hot dog water. The strange thing is, the taste grew on me as I made my way to the bottom of my glass. It had enough carbonation to add to the spice notes, which was pleasant. So far as drinkability, I'll finish this glass and be unlikely to revist this.

With this being my first hefeweizen, if this is any indicator of a quality flagship of this style, I gotta scratch it off my list. Any recommendations are welcomed. Thanks!

Pours a cloudy, deep golden color with a light head. Little or no lacing, but generally normal for a Hefeweizen. A sweet fruity flavor that masks the wheat a little too much. Average carbonation with a smooth mouth-feel. There's a slight chewiness factor but it is lless than other Hefeweizens, so I liked it better. Overall, not a bad beer and worth a try if your passing by Trader Joe's.

Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a clear pint glass. Freshness date indicated on back label.

A: Pale orange-tinged yellow, opaque and hazy, with moderately large off-white head with spots of lace.

S: Heavy banana and clove contributions, light lemon, and wheaty tanginess

T: A bit light flavored but fairly refreshing with tangy wheat crossed with prominent lemon-pepper finish

M: A bit thin without the creamy, frosting-like feel in hefeweizens. Carbonation is solidly above-average in quantity and on-level for the style. Aftertaste is very light.

D: Not too bad although it drinks more like an American wheat ale.

12 oz bottle poured into a tall glass.

Hazy dark golden brew with a foamy, creamy head. Looks very nice.

Aroma was a surprise...definite german hefe banana and clove notes over a fruity background. The active carbonation gives a nice real hefeweizen feel. The flavor has a great banana-clove effect up front, with a nice tingle. The finish has a good slightly sour wheatiness. The finishing effect is a bit on the heavy side. All in all this is a remarkably good approximation of the German hefe style, better than some German hefes.

12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Nice hazy golden yellow with good lacing.

Smell: Hints of banana, bubblegum, yeast, sourness and fruit.

Taste: Nice yeast, bubblegum, banana, yeast, and again, sourness and fruit, some cherries and strawberries.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with good carbonation.

Drinkability: One of my favorite TJ beers, if not the favorite. Lots of good flavor and balance, especially for a domestic.

The best Trader Joe's has to offer, IMO. I light beer with complex flavors - citrus and banana tones and a smooth finish. If I had to get one of their beers I would stick with this one, as I think it is good for all times and occasions.

Appearance: I think this beer has a beautiful bronze amber body with almost a. perfect white head and lace.

Smell: It has that banana aroma that most wizens have stronger almost too strong.

Taste: Banana like bead and yeast flavors. It has a slightly metallic and cheesy aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a lot fizz burn.

Drinkability: I thought it was a pretty good beer that has a bad rap..

A - Cloudy orange-gold with a loose white head.

S - Cloves, cloves and more cloves. A hint of citrus as well.

T - Heavy ... yep, cloves and some banana to boot. Acidic up front with a bit of wheatiness in the finish.

M - Light and somewhat fizzy. Refreshing feel anyway.

D - Dunno. Cloves are way over the top. Lacks balance.

Poured from a 12oz brown bottle.

Pours a nice cloudy orange color. Decent sized head. There is some yeast sediment in the bottle which took some swirling to loosen.

Aroma is fairly similar to most Bavarian Hefeweizen's that were actually brewed in Bavaria. Lots of nice banana, yeast, and clove aromas. Other spices can be detected with some citrusy smells coming through as well.

Taste is pretty good too. Nice yeast and wheat flavors in there. Some sweetness as well. Also the flavors of banana, clove and other spices and a very faint bubble gum note. Overall the taste is very good but seems a bit watered down compared to imported versions from Bavaria.

This one is surprisingly good, not what I was expecting for a Bavarian style Hefeweizen brewed in America, especially one branded under a grocery store name.

A: Hazy, amber beer with a disappearing white head.

S: Banana, a touch of clove, and a faint bit of sourness.

T: Banana, clove, touch of sweetness that is well-balanced with the sour.

MF: Smooth; carbonation is high, but not at all unpleasant.

D: Very nice hefeweizen. I will certainly have this one again. Good beer from a great store.

A-Hazy honey-amber w/nice head and ok retention. No lacing.
S-Sweet malt, bubble gum, clove, banana (ok, that's what the label says on the back, but for once it was thorough and accurate).
T-Sweet malt surfaces briefly upfront, midpalate of malt and spice, and finish is spicy w/clove and and banana.
M-Light bodied w/robust carbonation.
D-Good, and a potential session brew.

Pours a rich cloudy gold with a slowly dissipating head and some lacing. Smell is faint, grassy. Taste is lightly sweet, grassy, wheat come through nicely. Mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing. A definite summer brew that is not overly light...could drink more than one.

Pours cloudy orange/gold with a smallish white head. Lacing on the surface. Aroma is assertive wheat- cloves and bananas. Taste has little sweetness. Cloves and wheat tang. Pretty typical but not bad. Light to medium bodied and well carbonated. Pretty easily drinkable. Overall this is a pretty standard hefe. Certainly pretty good for the price.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy, golden body with a small, frothy, white head.

Smell: Wheaty aroma overflowing with sharp notes of banana and clove.

Taste: Pale and wheat maltiness, slightly sweet, slightly tangy, and with a hint of wheat stalk. Light spicy hops and bitterness. A fair amount of clove and banana. Sweetish finish with a lingering taste of cloves and wheat.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Not the most authentic hefeweizen around, but it's an acceptable beer overall at a good price.

12 oz. bottle in a pint glass. Pours an opaque orange honey color with an inch of vanilla head. Retention is good and some spotty lacing follows.

Smell is up front with citrus and banana, then clove and cinnamon. Similar to a hot mulled unfiltered cider with a bit of wheat overlay. I mostly pick up the fruit, no need to add any here. More definitive yeast notes after some air.

Tastes lightly of wheat and finishes with the fruit. Feel is decent but just a touch high on the carbonation, yielding a slightly thin feel yet masking the sweetness that is evident later. Rather citric sweet for the style in an 'additive' type way, limiting the flavor. This citric component helps explain the relatively deep and orange color of the beer. Light in body, moderate in ABV and fruity flavors make for an easy drinking brew, albeit a bit dumbed down for the style.

Poured a yellow with little bit of foam and lots of lace with this hazy yellow hefeweizen. The smell of yeast and citrus filled the nose. The smell of banana is also there. The taste was really different. The taste of yeast, wheat, citrus and a touch of clove was evident. Sour or bland on the finish. Not impressed.

Poured into a weizen glass.

Beautiful colors here - shades of deep amber, gold, and a bone white head that leaves all kinds of lacing. Decent amount of carbonation bubbles are present as well. Nice fruity aroma with notes of lemon and banana with some clove and other spices hanging out as well. Taste is fine, but by no means as good as the smell or appearance. Lemon, wheat, and sour apple dominate the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is full, but a bit watery. Easy drinking here and a wonderful value at $5.99/6 pack - I could drink these all night. Recommended.

Yet another from my 'custom' 6 pack from Trader Joe's.
I am glad that a chain supermarket, though a specialy one, has entered the realm of crafting different styles of beer. It's a great hefe, as far as i am concerned. I am not surprised that some people rated this in the C+ range, since all to often impressions, politics, and branding comes into the equation. I tried to rate this without any of that baggage attached, and found it to be a damn fine hefe, and for the $6 price, a real good buy!

Cloudy gold with fine bubbled head and resisilent pale lacing.

Aroma of spicy banana and clove. A good wheat presence too, as expected.

Taste is solid hefe, with big banana, clove florals, and herbal spicy wheat. Mouthfeel is towards the medium full end, and despite a bit of syrupy clinginess on the tounge, is great.

Drinkability is supurb, my pint emptied itself mighty-quick.

Pours a cloudy orange honey color with a giant white foamy head. The head leaves good lacing and lasts. The smell is pungent with orange, lemon, wheat, clove and banana. The taste is pretty strong with the flavors of lemon, orange peel, honey, bread yeast, and banana very present. The m/f is light with all the flavors mixing well. This is a good beer with no flaws, not great, but all in all, a good drinker that will be great on a hot summer day.
