12oz bottle poured into pint glass.

A: Cloudy pale orange-yellow, about a fingers worth of head,,, nice ring of foam thought the session... Very nice lacing.

S: Lemons right out of the gate, little Banana & clove with a wheat tanginess...maybe a little grassy too.

T: Prominently lemon with some pepper... tangy wheat and a little grassy.... there is a hint of banana and clove floating around the finish... pretty damn good.

M: Thin at the front, but the finish is a little on the creamy side. Carbonation is right on for the style. Aftertaste is light and refreshing.

D: You could pound a lot of these down.... pretty damn good beer and cheap to boot... Grab some.

12 oz into a pint

A - Pours a dark orange, almost golden color. Lots of hazing, very opaque. Head formation is quick and light white, breaks down to a film in a urry.

S - A sweet and spicy note - a combination of some yeasty breadiness, with some boozy notes. Some clove/coriander notes in the background.

T - Starts off with a malt sweetness which immediately is complimented by a wheat astringency - husky note. Builds up some yeasty notes mid-stream, banana is present. Finishes rather dry - but clean. Leaves behind a strong clove flavor.

M - Stronger in mouthfeel in both beer body and carbonation bite. A stinging mouthfeel at times, highly carbonated. Leaves behind a clinging sweetness.

D - Very drinkable beer, deceiving abv. A bit filling due to carbonation.

A worthy hefe.

It both pours and looks like a traditional hefe. Cloudy, honey color topped by a good moussey head that slowly dies down leaving spotty lacing and modest head retention.

The nose is musty bananas. Traces of rubbery baseball card bubblegum.

Tastes like a textbook hefe, wheaty with banana esters, with some clove and bubblegum in the finish both lingering in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is a little thin and on the watery side, but refreshing.

It's kind of a McHefeweizen--it does the job and it satisfies, but in a way that kind of makes you wish you were drinking something better. But really. What did you expect for the price?

In no way is this going to compete with its Bavarian brethren, but at the same time, it's kind of not too bad and I would highly recommend if for the budget conscious hefe drinker. You know who you are. You cheapskate.

The beer is a misty, cloudy orange, radioactive style. Sticky white head that kills quick.

Huge floral aroma, citrusy and orangey.

The flavor is very wheaty, oaty, and very sweet. The flavor is delicious, and just like a hefe should be.

Creamy, sticky, but a bit over carbonated.

Wow, this is a fantastic flavor, a good feel and just an aromatic delight. I could drink this on a plane, I could drink this on a train. You get the idea.

I always appreciate value for decent beers, and the Trader Joe's line is not exception. This Hefe pours yellow-golden into my pint glass with a decent off-white head that doesn't really leave any lace.

Lots of good aromas, more than I was expecting. Big ripe fruity banana, and spicy cloves. I even detect the bubblegum that other reviewers have mentioned. Some malt sweetness mingled in, as well. Much more intense, yeasty and German than I expected for an American brewed hefeweizen.

Flavors are concentrated and complex. A little more malt balance comes through, especially as the beer warms. Doughy, sweet malts are complimented by ripe banana, clove, the fruity, spicy flavors imparted by the the surprisingly authentic yeast. Really quite good! The flavors linger well with a medium-long finish, medium body that's maybe a bit over carbonated.

Overall, a bit of a sleeper at a really affordable price point. The unique flavors probably don't pair the best with a wide range of food, but the value to flavor of this beer is quite good. While I'm not well versed in German Hefeweizens, beers like this make me want to explore more of the roots of this beer.

12oz bottle with a cryptic batch date printed on the label. drank out of a wizen glass. 12oz sure looks puny in this 23oz vessel.

A- this one pours a murky golden orange colored body. it seems a little dark for the style. small white head forms and lasts a long time leaving rings of lacing on the sides of my glass.

S- strong smell of bubblegum right off the bat. very spicy. lots of yeast, clove, banana, and bubble gum. very nice.

T- the taste is kind of a let down after the great smell. the yeast comes through stronger than in the nose. the bubblegum is more subdued. the spices and banana are in check.

M- thin bodied with a very high level of carbonation. stinging almost.

D- a decent beer, especially for the price. i wont be coming back to this one that often. there are just so much better choices out there.

Appearance: Poured a cloudy harvest orange. A light eggshell colored head developed, which was not as thick as most of the hefes I'm used to. It dissipated to a thin lacing with a ring around the outside.

Smell: Very potent. I sniffed the bottle after opening and said, "Wow." It was more than I was expecting. Spicy cloves up front are followed by banana and fruity, almost strawberry, bubblegum.

Taste: Again, I'm very impressed. It's much like the smell. Prominent clove spice and bananas followed by fruity bubblegum.

Drinkability: It's smooth drinking hefe goodness; well balanced and deliciously flavorful. I think that makes it toothsome. Just the thing I need on a warm, brownout plagued SoCal night. I'm definitely trying TJ's Dunkelweizen.

A: Pours a cloudy orange with a moderate, frothy head. Moderate lacing.

S: A nice concentrated hefe aroma with orange and clove aromas.

T: Quite spicy with a strong banana character. Plain and one-dimensional, yet quite tasty.

M: Light-bodied and crisp with moderate carbonation.

D: It's not weihenstephaner, but it will do. A solid offering at a great price.

A- Pours a cloudy straw color with a tall white head.

S- Banana, clove, yeast, wheat.

T- Repeat of the nose but there is a slightly off flavor in the finish which I can't quite identify.

M- A bit thin but overall crisp and refreshing.

D- Not too shabby a beer for the price definitely worth trying since if ya like it you now have a n outlet for super cheap beer you enjoy.

It's sunny and 79º in Chicago, i'm jonesing for the first Hefe of the season...

Into a curvy Schwelmer Weizen glass, this pours a hazy orange, with rapid streams of bubbles ascending through it. After swirling and pouring the yeast, it billows with 3 fingers of foam. It dwindles to a finger of foam, but never under, leaving sticky lace in it's wake. Initial whiff is banana laffy taffy candy. Later it has a mild clove scent too. Flavor is sort if sweet, it has banana milkshake sort of feel. Honeydew melon rind aftertaste. It holds its own against the mainstream hefes, with a full body and spiced wheaty flavor. Not something i'd go out of the way for, but a gateway craft beer that's a good budget buy.

For the price this Hefe really can't be beat. It may lack some of the depth of others, but it's still really good and makes an excellent party beer, especially in the summer!

It pours a cloudy, brass-colored body with golden highlights beneath an average-sized head of bright white froth. The aroma is banana-like with a gentle dusting of spice. More banana, and a hint of vanilla, appear in the flavor along with some juicy apple and a bit of summer berry - and it's wheaty and gently spicy with clove and a suggestion of ginger. The bitterness is well-heeled, and it's a bit sweetish except for a slightly tart edge that helps keeps it in check.

Accessible. Drinkable. Why not?

Pours a nice golden color with orange shade to it. The big foamy head easily foams and can get out of control if not poured right. Smell is of bananas and floral fruits. Taste is of a light floral flavor with a hint of bananas and cloves. Body of this beer is nice and not overwhelming. This is easily a session beer and they have done a good job for this catagory of beer.

End of the fridge, but time to review a pretty decent bang for the buck brew.

Appearance - A nice cloudy orangish gold color. A thin fluffy head tops it off but disappears quickly. It looks very nice, but a little more staying power and lacing would push it over the top. Still, very nice.

Smell - Lots of banana up front. With some spicy clove, and a little funkiness even. Sort of that nice wet hay smell. Real nice, like a fresh baked banana bread.

Taste - Fairly sweet, some citrus and lemon. A big bunch of spice. It's a little sweet up front, mellows out, and then finishes almost thin. Not quite enough balance off that sweet citrus.

Mouthfeel - Not bad. A tad thin. Decent carbonation.

Drinkability - Good, but that sweet citrus spice makes it a little tough. I'd have another, but I'm all out.

This is a pretty good beer. Very good for the price. Good on a hot day, but nothing spectacular.

In a weizen glass.

Cloudy pale orangey yellow with big head.

Smell: Banana, clove, sweet wheat, barley.

Taste: Tangy wheat, clove, banana, slight lemon.

MF is good and right for the style.

Drinkability is good. I like it. The flavor doesn't pale so much in comparison to the nose, as I've found with some other hefes. Excellent beer for the price.

12 oz bottle into pint glass

A: Cloudy dark orange/yellow. Too dark for the style, but the right cloudyness. Poured a one finger off white head that left decent lacing while it was there, but wasn't there long. Some active carbonation.

S: Smell's strongly of bananas, and not much else. Some malt, not bitter at all though. Pretty much on style and enjoyable

T: Tastes again of Bananas, and even cloves a little. Sweet and a little biscuity. Not very wheaty though.

M: Feels light and sparkly, more active that it looks. Goes down pretty easy, and doesn't shock any part of the tounge.

D: Pretty darn good, filling for a beer of this color and mouth feel. A worthy lawnmower beer.

Pours a cloudy gold with a fluffy white head.

This reminds me of a standard hefeweizen, nothing spectacular about this (aside from the price). I'm getting bananas, cloves, a slight metallic taste(?) and a particular aftertaste that I'm not too fond of (but can't pinpoint).

Overall, metallic taste aside, I have no complaints about this beer. Normally I wouldn't get it again - but the price might just call me back ;)

A- Hazy deep gold with a solid full finger.

S- Smooth and sweet banana esters.

T- Sweet yet very slightly tart. There's bready notes but they aren't overpowering. Decent balanced finish.

M- Nice light/medium body, good carbonation.

D- Good enough for a hefe.

Pretty basic Hefe, nothing great but pretty good.

Cloudy blonde with a fat soapy white head that leaves some nice lace on the glass. Smells like a hefe should, overripe banana and clove with some lemon zest. Tastes like banana flavored bubblegum with a nice citrus pucker after the initial sweetness. Light on the palate with a lot of good carbonation. You could do a lot worse for under six bucks a sixpack.

A - Poured out a cloudy, orange color with golden tones. It had a foamy, bubbly, white, three-finger head that left a little lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of clove, banana, wheat and some nutty yeast. Mild spiciness in the nose, too.

T - It taste of very sweet wheat flavors with banana and clove flavors balancing it out.

M - It was crisp and sharp. A very light bodied beer.

D - This is a really good attempt at a true German/Bavarian hefe. The banana aromas and taste was quite impressive.

Great price for a pretty good hefeweizen. The beer looks alright, perhaps a bit dark, but good. The smell is ripe banana without enough clove presence. The wheat smells a bit thin, somehow. It's just not quite as refreshing and fresh as the top German entries in the style. The flavor is similar with a bit of alcohol around the edges. The feel is a little gummy to me. There's something not quite right, in my opinion. It's still a very drinkable wheat beer, refreshing and slightly tart. At any rate, at $6 or so for a six pack, it's a good deal.

Presentation: Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a small weizen glass. label depicts a top down view of some European row houses and is similar to other TJ labels. Short description of the style on the back. 5.3% ABV and 12 IBU. Batch number info printed on back label, but it is not clear as to what it means.

Appearance: Initially pours with 2.5 fingers of light tan head. This settles rather quickly for a hefe, eventually dropping to essentially nothing and leaving no lacing behind. Beer is slightly cloudy at first, but plenty of yeast sediment form the bottom of the bottle makes it an almost muddy brown/orange. Some sediment left in the bottle.

Smell: Strong notes of bananas and clove with strong wheat twang in the finish.

Taste: Sharp wheat twang upfront with a mild banana middle. Hints of apricot in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Average carbonation level. Body is okay.

Drinkability: A good representation of the style. The only significant flaw is the utter lack of head retention coupled with no lacing.

Bright golden color, only slightly cloudy. Pours with a foamy and persistent head, with very little lacing. Smells bready, and has a very yeasty and citrusy (almost sour) flavor. Feels thin in the mouth for a hefeweizen. Drinkable, but nothing special. Don't go out of your way to find it, but don't feel bad about trying it.

Poured to a hefeweizen glass. A dense creamy head bubbles and pops, standing firm at half an inch thick for a while. Color is a dark mustard orange-yellow, and nicely clouded from the pour-swirl-pour.

Interesting aroma. Quite citrus-fruity, recalling Fruit Loops or Fruity Pebbles cereals, and the malt/yeast cooperation veers toward a lively Belgian character. Banana is here but less pronounced than in true German hefes. An interesting aroma, somewhat left-of-center yet not totally off the style map. I can dig it.

Flavor keeps bringing on citrus/tropical fruits, the banana being only one of them. Softness of the wheat complements the hefe yeast, although the malt isn't as gentle in character as a real German hefe, while the yeast isn't quite as pronounced and forward as it could be. Still, it edges pretty closely to the real deal, much more successfully than a lot of U.S. versions of this style--which usually totally fail. Sourdough bread in the finish.

Way too carbonated. I was hoping for a creamy, soft presence to the texture, but got too much tingle instead. Not a disaster, however.

A worthy stab at the style, better than the majority of U.S. versions, but still no mindblowing facsimile of the real deal. Glad I tried it.

Pretty standard hefe contract-brewed for Trader Joes. Pours a straw, golden color with semi-thin layer of white foam. Yeast sediment was not as plentiful as expected. The nose is very nice with plenty of phenols and banana aromas. Slight traces of bubblegum and pepper come through as well. The taste is mildly sweet up front with a soft sharpness at the finish. Quite delicate overall, yet well carbonated. The mouthfeel may be a bit thin at times, but for a session beer like this, I cannot complain. Easy to drink, easy to enjoy, and cheap to boot.
