Serving: Bottle into tulip
Served: 2 November 2014

Appearance: Pours a deep black with a soft head that quickly diminishes. Some bubbles sticking around along the edges. Leaves minimal, if any lacing.

Smell: Soft roasted notes of dark roast coffee and chocolate. Little to no hops in nose.

Taste: Great body and depth of flavor. Notes of dark chocolate, faint coffee/espresso notes, a light graininess. The beer finishes pretty sweet, though it's not a milk stout, and this sweetness seems to become more prevalent as the beer warms.

Mouthfeel: Soft and smooth on the tongue, with medium-high body.

Overall: The best off-brand beer I've ever bought, and for $6.50/sixer, one I'll consistently buy during the upcoming winter months. Would definitely seek this out if you're looking for a cheap but delicious brew and you have a Trader Joe's nearby!

Purchased a single 12 oz. for $1 at TJ's to try. Was impatient so I poured room-temperature into a pint glass. This was my first visit with the Stockyard Oatmeal Stout.

Appearance - Dark-brown to black caramel color, moderate amount of carbonation, thick frothy head with long retention time. Clear around the sides of the glass when held up to the light. Has a very inviting presentation for an oatmeal stout.

Smell - Malts: sweet, lightly roasty and toasty. Hops: light hop aroma, hard to distinguish notes through the dominant malty scents. Overall smells very nice and clean.

Taste - Sweet and dessert like. Fantastic and smooth roasted flavor. Very well rounded to the oatmeal stout type. Malt heavy, hop light. I really like it. Great drinkability too; no one characteristic is overpowering in any way.

Mouthfeel - Very smooth. Leaves the lips nice and sticky. Retained a slight effervescence and went down nicely.

Overall - I really liked this oatmeal stout. It fulfilled my craving for an oatmeal stout in every way. I would go out of my way to try it again. Didn't have a strong alcoholy feel to it so I didn't feel to guilty drinking it rather quickly.

12oz bottle, "best consumed by 02/11/15"
A 3.75 - black with a creamy tan head that holds good retention
S 4 - bold aroma with roasted barley, dark chocolate, oat, coffee
T 3.5 - similar to aroma: dark chocolate, oats, roasted barley, faint coffee, earthy hops
M 4 - velvety smooth, medium bodied, finishes with lingering roastiness
O 3.75 - it's been years since I had this one! Great to come back to, great value! I'll buy this on occasion if I don't see anything else more interesting at Trader Joe's.

Appearance- pour a opaque black, massive expresso two finger fluffy head, sticky lacing to the glass.

Smell-sweet milk chocolate, tangy background.

Mouthful/taste/Drinkability- great body, creamy texture, massive milk chocolate flavor, tangy hop bitterness which balances the sweetness nicely. Has a nice roasty back notes but the chocolate takes the for front with this brew. Great creamy body from the oats. I would of liked to of seen maybe a little bit more of hop bit. This reminds me more of a milk stout or chocolate stout from all that chocolate flavor that takes the over the remainder of the aroma in flavor. But no complaints it a really great beer and for the price at 5.99 for a 6 pack you can't go wrong. I'll definitely buy this again, I recommend you give it a try.

Poured into a tuplip glass
Bottle date: unknown
pour date: August 18, 2014

APPEARANCE: nearly jet black.. has a deep coffee hue to it. Had a 1" thick, light tan, foamy head, but quickly settled to a thin lamina leaving uniformal lacing around wall of glass.

SMELL: molasses, teriyaki, plums

TASTE: Over-steeped coffee and plums. Reminds of the flavor I get when I dry-hit through my aromatic tobacco pipe. Sweet up front, but the bitterness quickly balances it out.

FEEL: creamy, full bodied, not too sticky.

BURP: unpleasant, choppy and foamy

A> Poured from a 12oz bottle, pours a small khaki head with decent retention. Nice dark brew, looks good.

S> Smells of mocha, chocolate, cream, and a hint of brown sugar.

T> A lot of mocha and chocolate flavors, nice creaminess, quite sweet with just a touch of sour. Really nice.

M> Feels nice in the mouth, surprisingly thick for the style. Highly drinkable.

O> Not a huge fan of TJs beers, but the Stockyard Stout is a very nice stout and a terrific value at $1 per beer.

A- mocha- like head forms two fingers high. Frothy and persistent. Body is pitch-black and completely opaque.

S- rich caramel and toffee aromas. Smells big like an imperial stout. Bitter dark chocolate notes. Hint of booze. There's also something like chicory or oak.

T- Robust flavors of caramel, dark chocolate and roasted malt. There's a big dose of vanilla present. There's a touch of assertive, piney hop flavor.

M- Smooth, mellow and creamy. Sweet throughout until a mildly bitter finish. Carbonation is lively and creates a vibrant sensation.

This is one of the best bang for your buck stouts, I must say. Great in every category.

The beer pours an almost completely opaque brown. The scant translucent brown head dissipated to a foam ring.

The aroma was roasty and of coffee with some sweetness and a little breadiness. There was no hops component to the aroma.

Sweetness carries the day here and virtually overpowers the roastiness. This beer seems too sweet even for this style. There was only a hint of hops astringency.

This beer has a light body with medium carbonation.

Overall, this beer is OK, but was a little too sweet even for me. Reminds me of a milk stout.

Stockyard Oatmeal Stout has a thick, creamy, frothy, beige head, lots of heavy lacing left on the glass, and a dark brown appearance. The aroma is of dark-roasted, but not burnt, barley malts, sweet chocolate, and some coffee. Taste is of sweet, dark-roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and smooth bitterness (chicory). Mouthfeel is medium and creamy (from the oatmeal), and Stockyard Oatmeal Stout finishes powdery and very delicious. Drinkability is quite high.

Pours opaque very dark brown with cola edges. The 1/2 inch khaki head settles to a film and thick ring on top that leaves thick strands of lace.

The smell is of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt and a hint of vanilla.

The taste is of roasted malt with chocolate and coffee accents.

The texture is medium bodied with high carbonation.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this one. A solid oatmeal stout. Roasted malt dominates with chocolate and coffee accents. Very good on its own; outstanding considering its price.

Had this a handful of times. Felt it was due for a review.

Picked up at Trader Joes in Buffalo for 1 dollar. When I had this for the first time in my life, I was blown away at the price and flavor. What are the macrobreweries missing out on?

A: Pours a dark jet black, with a light laced brown head that lines the glass. It looks good, but nothing spectacular.

S: Get some roasty notes of coffee, malt, and a little metallic for some reason. Not sure why.

T: Forget the smell, this thing is off the charts. Starts out rich and dark, then laces the tounge with a light amount of smokey flavor, followed by the sweet taste of vanilla. DAMN this is a fine tasting beer. It gets me every time how well balanced it is.

M: Slightly thick, but easily drinkable. Not heavy, but you do know that you're drinking an oatmeal stout.

O: For a staple beer of an oatmeal stout, this one has to take the cake. Trader Joes has something special here. I don't know how they made such a fine beer so cheap, but please share your magic with the others so that they can step up their crap.

S: malty with notes of coffee and dark chocolate, savory not sweet

T: coffee and dark chocolate, middle is toasty malt, rich and dark, cherry, cola, vanilla, finish bitters slightly with a nice hop flavor

M: full body, slightly slick

O: a good representation of the style at a great value

When the carbonation clears and finally disappears from the edges thus sets up with a deep radiant onyx color. The head was tan with a fizzy nature but it collared thickly and set up nicely.

The nose is filled with roasted oats, sweet yet dry chocolate, slight roasted coffee and creamy marshmallow.

The flavor yields to the creamy sweetness with a marshmallow tendancy. Dry chocolate, sorghum, molasses, raisin and even maple make an appearance.

The feel is a touch thick with a bit more carbonated bite than I desire. Otherwise it's smooth and easy to drink.

Ostensibly, this is a cheap beer as its Trader Joe's, but it packs a good flavor and serves it's purpose as a easy to drink stout.

Black with a light brown head that was substantial, had staying power, and left pretty good lacing.

Aroma and flavor have plenty of roasty, toasty, a smidge of burnt, good maltiness with a touch of caramel malt, and a smidge of coffee and chocolate.

Body is pretty darn thick and real nice for an oatmeal stout. Slightly sweet finish.

Overall a very tasty beer and one of my favs from trader joes so far.

You have to take into account the cost of this beer ($1) in your rating!
For the price, it is an outstanding stout, with a great, almost creamy flavor. It would probably go best with a dessert, chocolate and sweet, than with a meal. This is a good beer to try as you can purchase single bottles from Trader Joe's.

Poured at room-temp from a bottle into a mug.

Appearance - Dark umber. not completely opaque; showed a 1/2" long-lasting head of foam which eventually left strands of lacing.and a ring of bubbles which never disappeared throughout the whole drinking of the glass

Smell - Strong. Earthy. Chocolate, oats, honey.

Taste: Chocolate and oats up front. Orange, malt and grains in the back end. I also kept tasting hints of cherry, and rose.

Mouthfeel: Like cream: heavy and smooth, and lasts for a craaazy long time. Light carbonation which lasts for about a second-and-a-half. As I waited for quite a while between taking drinks, I found it warms the mouth and makes your saliva feel extra thick (if given such time.) For me, this was quite an enjoyable feeling.

Overall: I bought a six-pack of this for a beer tasting party, expecting it to be good. I did not expect it to be this good. A great brew for a slow, enjoyable drink, and for the price, a real deal for such quality. I will be buying this again.

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass. Pours a very dark charcoal, with a one and half inch tan head, that coats the sides of the glass with sticky lace. Smell is biscuit, oats, chocolate, worthers, vanilla, and coffee beans. Taste is starts will worthers and vanilla and finishes with coffee and oats really a nice flavor when drank at close to room temperature. Body is medium for its average size, perfect carbonation, a touch dry as you would expect, and easy to drink. This is a excellent stout and a excellent price.

Been on a stout kick the last week and had to try this one since it had been a few years. Full body with a subtle coffee aftertaste. The flavor does disapate making it a very easy beer to enjoy for a longer duration. This may be my go to stout beer when not drinking an ipa. For the price you cannot do any better for an outstanding stout.

T: yep sweet coffee. A little dark chocolate too

What a find at Trader Joe's. This oatmeal stout is a great beer and and fair bargain at that.

Appearance is classic translucent stout black. Moderate head that fades to persistent lacing.

Smell is fairly rich and roasty toasty. Notes of caramelized malt, toasted bread, molasses and soy sauce. Definitely a savory note to this one.

The taste is similar to the nose. Sweet and savory notes appear out of roasted malts and browned sugars. Slight creamyness gives a creme brulee note on the edges. But this is not a "sweet" stout by any measure. Roasted malt continues to the long finish that can best be described with the word "umami".

Mouthfeel is clean and refreshing. Spot on carbonation for the flavors.

Overall, this is a fine stout and one to keep on hand IMO.

poured from the bottle into a pint glass

A - Pours a dark black with just the tiniest ruby highlights when held to the light. Frothy, two-finger tan head that I suspect won't make it all the way thorough...We'll see. Head is just a ring of bubbles by two-thirds down the glass, but this is better than anticipated. Leaves behind a few small splotches of lacing here and there.

S - Roasted chocolate malt, oats and a hint of vanilla greet the nose upon opening the bottle. In the glass, things become slightly less impressive with the oat and vanilla notes disappearing and leaving a generic roasted chocolate malt aroma.

T - A bit of roasted chocolate malt upfront. The body is thin and fairly smooth from the oats, with a flavor profile consisting almost entirely of roasted chocolate malt and just a tiny semblance of hops. Smooth passing over the back of the tongue leads to a slightly dry, bitter chocolate finish.

M - Medium bodied and just enough carbonation to give the beer a very slight creaminess. The price point, this isn't terrible but it really needs to be thicker and creamier. Probably the worst aspect of this beer.

In typical Trader Joe's fashion, this is a mediocre, economical beer that is easily forgotten. The flavor and mouthfeel just come off too thin for what I look for in a stout. Unless I am hosting a party devoid of beer enthusiasts, I don't see purchasing this again. Also noteworthy, is that it was while opening a beer from this six-pack with pliers while camping that I sliced my hand open and got a delightful trip to the Appalachian ER. I suspect that scar will be there for life....

This is one of the best oatmeal stouts I have tasted.

Served in a clear pint glass, the color is dark brown/black similar to espresso.

Thick malt chocolate colored head which dissipated quickly.

Traditional stout nose, godd hints of malt and coffee.

Slightly sour yeasty flavour followed by butterscotch and coffee.

Very easy and smooth to drink wik a medium bitter finish.

The beer is dark and opaque.

The olfactory is turned on to the smell of oats and subtle sweetness.

The oatmeal flavor bursts onto the tongue immediately with a slight sweet after flavor.

Light carbonation makes it easy to go down and does not fill you up with gas.

The beer is one to keep on hand. I had mine sitting in front of the fireplace.

This beer pours a very dark brown with some ruby tinges, and a fair layer of light tan head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass.

I can pick up on some toasted oats on the nose, nothing too special stands out, no brown sugar or anything too sweet.

Flavor wise there is a nice brown sugary oatmeal flavor, no hops, nothing boozy, just a nice subtle sweetness with toasted oats that linger at the end.

Its pretty thin and not exceptionally smooth, but easy to down for sure, definitely a session-able beer.

A: The beer is very close to being jet black in color—when held up to the sun only a speck of red is visible near the bottom of the glass. It poured with a finger high tan head that quickly died down but left a thin head covering the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of chocolate and roasted malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of chocolate malts along with hints of roasted malts and a very slight amount of bitterness. Bits of sweetness become perceptible as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit watery on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The oats lend a little smoothness to the mouthfeel.
O: I found this to be a pretty solid oatmeal stout, except that I would have liked if the mouthfeel was a little fuller in body. It is quite easy to drink.
