If you are lucky enough to live around a Trader Joe’s then you are lucky enough to shop there. One of their specialties is very good beer at an extremely nice price, which they exemplify in their Joseph Brau collection.

“Prost” is a season beer, which should be purchased promptly, and fits very well into their niche. Simply put, the beer is very good but at a price you would expect to pay for an OK beer. Nice head, malty and rich this beer goes well alone and would pair wonderfully with a rich stew or grilled red meat.

At this price and quality I say buy two six packs before it disappears.

I picked up a six pack of Josephs Brau Spring Prost last week at Trader Joes. I like this style and I'm interested to see what Trader Joes can do with it, so lets see how it goes. 2015 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- The label looks nice, it's got a nice clean design to it and it's just slightly eye catching. It poured an amber color that took on more of red amber when held to the light with almost one fingers worth of off white head that died down to a thin ring that faded away and it left just a slight bit of lacing behind. This is a nice looking beer, but I wish the head, retention and lacing were all better.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with a big doughy aroma being the first to show up and it leads right in to the malts with some pale malts, grainy, sweet malts and a little bit of caramel malts coming through. Towards the end there's just a little bit of hops which impart some earthy and herbal hop aromas. This beer has a pretty nice aroma that was fairly true to style.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with that doughy aspect still being the first to show up and it's followed by the malts which impart the same aspects with the grainy and sweet malts seeming to stick out the most. On finish comes the hops which are a little lighter than they were in the aroma with no single hoppy aspect sticking out the most and it had a sweet malt aftertaste. This a nice tasting beer, but i wouldn't mind a little more of a hop presence.

M- Smooth, a little on the sweet side, a little crisp, on the slightly thicker side of being medium bodied with a slightly lower amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is pretty nice and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a nice beer and I thought it was a nice example of the style, but it still had some aspects that I found to not be that inline with the style, but they weren't too overpowering so it was still identifiable as a Maibock and in the end I liked it. This beer has nice drinkability, it's smooth, a little on the sweet side, a little crisp, slightly filling and the taste does a nice job at holding my attention, I think could drink a couple of these but after that the sweetness might start to be too much. What I like the most about this beer was that the alcohol was well hidden and it was still fairly true to style. What I like the least about this beer is the appearance, it could use a little work. I might buy this beer again if I couldn't find the Maibocks that I like more. I can't say I would recommend this as a great Maibock, but I think it's still worth trying. All in all I liked this beer, but I didn't love it, it just had a few things that seemed a little out of place. This isn't my favorite Trade Joe beer and it's slightly above average for the style. Nice job guys, this was a nice Maibock, especially for the price, keep it up.

I suppose I really shouldn't be surprised, having been pleasantly surprised by this brewery before. This is a damned good maibock, and at 7.3% and $6.99 a sixer at Trader Joe's, a damned good value. Beautiful Amber/red color, malty/sweet where it should be, the alcohol is nicely concealed, and the Tettnanger and Hallertau hops close out the show. Gotta let the missus get out to TJ's more often...

12 oz bottle with a BB date of 26 July 2016.
Pours with a mahogany colored body that has excellent clarity but is covered by a rather weak, off-white head. Limited lacing.
Moderately strong malty flavor with partially hidden alcohol. Hops are faint in the flavor but more obvious in the aroma.
Smooth, full body with light carbonation that's a touch too light.

Appearance: Clean amber, with a large head of off-white suds. Loopy tree-line lace.

Aroma: Malty sweetness, honey, toasty grains. Pretty typical and not unappealing.

Taste: Sweet, bready, with a slight tingle of herbal hop bitterness underneath the palate. A decent maibock, but with its overly-sweet character, it’s not one I’d care to revisit.

I just returned from Zie Motherland so I had my fair share of Maibock style beers during my trip. I was happy to see that my local TJ's had this on sale for a mere $3.99 a six pack! So this was a no brainer (keine Krähen)

Appearance - deep copper w/ slight head

Smell - did not detect much aroma on this, no biggie - beer is for drinking, not smelling

Taste - light, crisp bright, carmel/butterscotch sweet bready flavor, very drinkable. Some maibocks can be a bit sticky sweet but this one is very drinkable and smooth.

Mouthfeel - good

Overall - a great maibock and a great price (the reg price is $5.99 so even the regular price is a good deal)

Decent Maibock. A bit dark for the style. Could benefit from some more time in the laggering tank.

transparent deep amber color, good amount of carbonation. It smells wonderful- very floral and sweet. A very malt forward beer with a distinctive flavor. A terrific value for an excellent Bock beer.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of 08/13/13. Sampled on May 19, 2013 so I am ahead of schedule.

It looks very nice and the way it should with a copper-amber pour that has a significant amount of carbonation leading up to only a small head, that fizzles.

The aroma is malty with some biscuit, caramel, toffee, sweetness, and other sugary-type malts that are obvious but I cannot think of how else to describe them.

The body is smooth and medium.

The taste has an intense malty sweetness up front to the point of being a bit over the top with the slightest of low hop bitterness on the tail end. I mean I could drink this again because it does have some interesting characteristics but it really is malt-heavy and malt-forward.

Comes in a bottle (6 for $6.50). "Best by" date is 5 months off, so I'm assuming it was brewed a month ago or so... Not refrigerated like all of trader joe's beers.

Pours a clear rich amber with a thin tan head on top. Aroma is deep and rich with loads of dried fruit: figs, dates.

Taste starts off very mild, but sweet and builds with rich caramel, toffee, fig and raisin notes. Finishes cry and crisp with a spicy hop bite at the back end.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Has a a nice silky mouthfeel in the middle and finishes dry and crisp with help from the carbonation and hops. Alcohol is definitely there, but is inoffensive.

Overall a decent maibock. Not one of the best I've had, but definitely one of the best for this price. I would buy again just based on pricing.

Clear amber orange with one fat finger of white head that lasted a long time. Some lace on the sides as the level drops.
Smell is toasted bread crust malt with a hint of floral hops.
Taste is toasted sweet bready malt with just a slight herbal hop note toward the end of the sip.
Mouthfeel is medium with ample carbonation. Finish is lightly sweet and semi dry.
Overall a beer that is best when fresh and this one was. The bottles have a best by date which you should look at before purchasing. My T.J.'s has quite a few old beers on their shelves.

Mouthfeel - good

Overall - a great spring/summer beverage!
