Like some kind of double American Brown Ale. This is, of course, a very good thing.

Poured from a 17-Jan.-2018 can into a lager glass produced a fine tan head. The head had very good retention and leaves a coat lacing on the sides of the glass. The body is clear and very dark brown.
The aroma is earthy and rather hoppy, with notes of caramel, molasses, light spicing and vanilla. Hops are quite evident in both the aroma and the flavor. Tasting reveals a rich malt flavor that's strong but does not mask the hop component. This is a rich and complex brew with very good hop/malt balance.
Mouthfeel - about perfectly carbonated. Near full bodied with some crispness.
O - This is similar to nearby Rogue's Mogul Madness. Recommended year around.

12 oz single can from Lifesource in Salem OR. $1.59 South Side Ale 7.0% Pours a coca-cola style brown with a small tan head..god lace left. Aroma is rather muted for some reason..but there a re chewy toffee malts in there and some sort of winter spice? Small resinous hop in there to. Nice balanced taste..coffee and toffee with whole cream milk with some hopping underneath..a little chocolate dust too. Actually pleasing. Nice mellow medium smooth mouth feel..luckily this beer is not that sweet so it works well. I liked this beer..would drink more in the coming gloomy wet Oregon spring.

Translucent brown with red when held up to the light. Two fingers of light tan head that stays about ten minutes. Rings and splotches of lace as the head falls.
Smell is malty and sweet.
Taste is sweet caramel malt with a good hop resin bitterness.
Mouthfeel is medium with light carbonation. The finish is light sweetness with a dry bitterness that lingers. The alcohol is well hidden. Overall a well made beer. Reminds me some of English Pub ale but much stronger.

Had this on tap at the recently opened Hawthorne Hophouse. Hadn't been there before. I'll review it soon. They served this one in a 12oz. tulip.
A: This beer has a dark brown reddish look that had a pretty tan looking head.
S: It smells quite intense. A resin malty scent that carries with it some alcohol.
T: This beer tastes like resiny caramel. It is a little sweet and has a long drawn out flavor.
M: It dries out your mouth with the lingering dry aftershock. Not a very carbonated beer. Quite a bit of body for even this color.
D: I could have a few of these. Definately an intense strong ale, but I'll admit I'm a sucker for Caldera.
