Thanks to stillmatic2232 as I work my way through the 93 lbs. of beer he cracked my front stoop with. 22oz black-waxed bottle with what looks like my mom’s black lab on the label, split with my wife.

The pour is black; no adjectives, adverbs, descriptors, or lean-tos. Smells like chocolate, bourbon, & my best dreams.

Mogli - Bourbon Barrel Aged is a nice side-step to your normal black, barreled monster. The chocolate from the base beer makes the skin on the side of my nose start to break out. The barrel is a lovely compliment of vanilla, bourbon, plus nougat, brown sugar, with an ending hit of roast bitterness. Thick, decadent, & sweet enough that I’d enjoy having this most nights after dinner.

A step up from a very good base beer, the chocolate in this is what other brewers strive for & so often miss. Excellent.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours pitch black with a two finger khaki head with great retention and lacing. Aroma dominated by bourbon with dark toasted malt and vanilla in the background. Flavor is also bourbon forward, with a nice porter base with dark toasted malt, vanilla, light chocolate and oak and a hint of coffee. Finishes boozy with lots o' bourbon. Medium bodied with sharp carbonation. A tasty bourbon forward porter, but the barreling has definitely taken front seat here. I am a big fan of Mogli, reviewing as one of the best chocolate porters I've tried, but the flavors of the base beer here is not as obvious with this version. The porter base is more than sufficient to support the bourbon and this is an enjoyable barreled ale, but I think I actually like the standard Mogli better. This drinks like a much bigger porter, amazing body and intensity for 8.5%. A must try for those who like bourbon forward ales.

Pours an almost opaque super dark crimson-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, vanilla, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with chocolate syrup, cocoa powder, vanilla bean, earth, bourbon, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a great bourbon barrel aging that works super well with the base beer.

Serving type: bottle.

I’m rather surprised that this beer was not already here on BA - perhaps there is confusion with the original version, but they are definitely different. Anyway, this beer deserves its own place; I think that it’s one of the best imperial porters out there. Compared to imperial stouts I t’s a rather under-represented style and Caldera has absolutely nailed it. It also ages very nicely; this one has been in my cellar for a couple of years. I do have to say that it’s not particularly pretty to look at, but not many porters are. To my eye it’s just a bit dull. Then you stick your nose in and the overwhelming wonderfulness of this beer just smacks you in the face. It’s huge. Sweet chocolate and bourbon dominate, with more subtle tones of vanilla and cherries. On the tongue it’s huge again, everything an imperial porter should be. Sweet and bitter chocolate, hints of molasses, hints of dark fruit, gentle, fresh spruce hop tones. Feel is also exactly right, delivering a light effervescence with a backbone of oily body. I’ve graded this up up a bit, just because it’s such an excellent example of a style that’s seldom done this well.

more of a brown ale than a porter in many ways, a little lighter in color, more brown than black, heavier on the chocolate malt and far less on the roast. sometimes i almost prefer this type of beer in the bourbon barrels over the darker porters and stouts, there is a different kind of synergy here, and this is one of the better ones i have had really. big frothy khaki head over the chocolate brown body, a huge aromatic coming up of bourbon and milk chocolate, some from the malt, obviously some from added chocolate, really sweet and desserty, but not too huge and thick or anything, and not overly alcoholic considering its strength here. amazing oak and bourbon flavor on this, its been a real long time since i had the original, but there is even more wood to this, and it accentuates the chocolate beautifully. less sweet than it smells, with some bitter chocolate notes in here too, and more roast on the grain than it looks like it has. extraordinarily well integrated and mellow, almost tastes aged in the bottle too, just fantastic depth of flavor, and perhaps a new high water mark for chocolate porter as a style. have not had nearly enough caldera beer, but this is the cream of their crop thus far in my experience. fancy and delicious, creamy and rich, not too heavy. world class.

Bottle from Bier:Thirty. As much as love regular Mogli, I was hoping this would turn out better. It’s good but, the BBA mutes the awesome chocolate notes of the base. Aroma equal parts booze and chocolate, more boozy barrel up front in the taste, with some molasses sweetness. Moderate alcohol heat. Still good though.
