Pours beautiful clear, copper color with one inch head. Taste starts off with big pine, grapefruit rind and then goes to deep caramel. Decent mix of bitter and sweet. Not my favorite IPA, but this one is solid and worth a try.

3/13 BBH more good than bad. 4.1 cause it's drinkable more so than a 4 but a tiny bit malty

12 oz can (canning date of June 2015) served in a lager glass.

A: moderate off-white head over a hazy copper body. Some sticky lacing.

Surprisingly malty aroma but then this can is a bit older than optimal for style.

More hops are evident upon tasting.

Mild-medium bitterness.

Feel: Medium body with medium carbonation.

Caldera Brewing Co. "Hopportunity Knocks IPA"
12 oz. can, "CANNED ON:07/24/15"... uh-oh, 6 mos. old !!!

Unfortunately there's a little bit of oxidation in this old can and I'll have to try to find a fresher sample to update this review. It's not bad though, it doesn't come off as cardboard-like or papery, but rather just shows an accentuated (I'm assuming) caramel character in the malt. Or perhaps not, Caldera tends to produce a fairly rich maltiness as one of the signatures to all of their beers.

Beyond that however, I can't be sure how the hops should be. It's fruity/citrusy, piney, earthy, and grassy but I have no idea what kind of intensity it would normally have. It IS nicely balanced against the kind of rich malt, however, which as noted is a Caldera trait, and if I hadn't looked at the canned on date I might not have thought anything was awry. So, with that said, the richly caramelish malt is just sweet enough against the drying bitterness that you carry a drop of sweetness into the finish; and the hops are well threaded through it, delivering an overall character straight through, but also displaying some individual components along the way. In that sense I find it really well-balanced. It's malty, caramelish, piney/spicy/floral/earthy/citrusy/grassy, and then bitter with all of those things together in the finish but fading. Uhhhhhhh, yeah, I'd call that satisfying! I'd really like another. Great IPA. Worth trying to be sure.

Got this one in Buffalo during GABER 2015. Cheers!

From a can into a snifter

APPEARANCE: Pours a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy, beige-white head with very good retention. Clear rust orange in color with no carbonation evident. Darker for the style. Head slowly fades to a foamy cap and leaves chunky lacing down the glass. A splotchy wisp remains until the end with lots of nice lacing. Good looking and rather dark for the style.

SMELL: Caramel, grapefruit notes and grassy hops. Light honeydew melon as well. Nice, though not overly complex.

TASTE: Caramel and melon sweetness up front, with grapefruit flavors at the swallow. Bolder finish with more grapefruit, lemon citrus, caramel, honeydew melon and some hop bitterness. Flavorful and well balanced with all the usual character of the style.

PALATE: Medium body and carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes a touch dry. Some bitterness lingers.

OVERALL: Good stuff, and definitely a better example of the style than the Ninkasi I had right before it. This one has some nice character and isn't bitter for the sake of being bitter. Not overly complex, but all the usual character is in the right place. Worth a try if you like the style.
