Bottle:
Pours deep brown bordering on black, with a nice buildup of head on a vigorous pour. The tan head reduces to a nice foam, fading slowly and lacing the the glass. It doesn't take much if a swirl to generate a froth.

The nose immediate brings chocolate without much inhaling. My first real sniff brings about more of cocoa-based chocolate, with some coffee and oat notes hinting that the beer might not be all sweet.

The taste follows the nose quite well, cocoa, chocolate, coffee with cream up front. The taste dies have a coffee-astringent bitterness coming in the mid-taste transition. During this I also note a brief dark cherry taste before the end brings a somewhat surprising bitter end (cherry woodiness), which does mellow slightly with warmth.

The feel is medium up front, but seems to weaken late, somehow. Maybe another way to put it is the flavors are robust up front, but fade to a singular bitterness which has a bit of wateriness to it. Warmth brings out more if a woody dryness.

This was a tale of two beers, a lovely full beginning, if perhaps a tad malty; and a contrasting, slightly resinous bitter end that also seems to kill the nice tastes from the front a bit too much. My mixed interpretations leaf to a reduced rating from where I thought this could go.

Drank from a 1 pint 6 fl ozs white wax dipped bottle purchased at Whole Foods Market, New York, NY
Served in a snifter

The beer poured dark chestnut brown and, considering the relatively high ABV, a bit thin. A creamy, frothy, one-finger tall, khaki colored crown capped the liquid. The head quickly dropped to a long-lasting, thin and bubbly collar. Small, drippy steaks of lacing trickled along the glass.

Super intense vanilla notes dominated the aroma. The vanilla had a very strong bourbon element and reminded me a lot of high quality vanilla extract. Semi-sweet chocolate notes were apparent. Quite hot fudge-like. Chocolate chip cookie dough also came to mind.

The flavor profile was impressive yet straightforward. Super chcolatey. Rich and fairly sweet. Hot fudge might perhaps be the best comparison. Good amount of vanilla extract, yet not quite at the level found in the nose. The beer finished off-dry with toasted malt notes.

On the palate, the beer was somewhat thinner than I anticipated but still creamy, fluffy and smooth. The liquid contained a large bubbled, semi-aggressive effervescence that settled down with time.

Mogli is a tasty and enjoyable beer with an outrageously rich vanilla aroma. Even though this oak-aged porter fails to exhibit any oak or barrel character and may not be super complex, it is an interesting dessert beer that should be shared with a friend or two.

Bottle shared with friends at a weekend tasting. Thick dark brown pour. Aroma dominated by milk chocolate, with notes of vanilla, oak, bourbon. The taste follows the same notes, very heavy on the chocolate. Excellent beer.

22 oz bottle, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, pitch-black color with a half of a finger of white head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic! Lots of chocolate, roasted malt, brown sugar, molasses and vanilla. Very pleasant aromas.

Taste: Wow! Very tasty! Tons of roasted malt and chocolate up front, followed by some vanilla, caramel and brown sugar-like sweetness and black pepper. Not much in the way of hops, which is surprising for a beer from the Pacific Northwest.

Mouthfeel: Chewy, creamy, smooth. No carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 8.5%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a very, very, good porter! Great flavors of malt and chocolate, all wrapped up into an extremely creamy quaff. Highly recommended.
