Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Caldera's Hop Hash Ale is a partnership with Hopunion, LLC. Hop Hash is like a breakfast hash, but mashing different hop varieties instead of meat, potatoes and spices--a twist on the American-Style Strong Pale Ale using pure lupulin for bitterness, taste and aroma. This ale gets its name from pure hop lupulin extracted and scraped from the Hopunion pelletizing line. Lupulin is the glandular powder separated from the strobiles of the Humulus Lupulus (hops) plant.

22oz bomber into a pint glass.

Pours a slightly hazy medium copper with a thick off-white head. Great head retention.

Has a very citrusy hop aroma along with a little bit of dankness. A little bit of caramel and biscuit malt as well.

Taste is a great balance between malt and hops. Great earthy citrus quickly followed by biscuit and toasted malt. No one flavor really overpowers the other and the balance is really outstanding. Bitterness is high and it leads to a crisp, clean finish. Nice full mouthfeel.

I am really impressed by this beer. It is not a humungous hop bomb but more of a balanced IPA. Would like to have again sometime.

Caldera Brewing 'Hop Hash IPA' @ 6.5% , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $7

A-pour is a slight pale gold from the bottle to slightly hazy amber in the glass with a medium size off white head leaving a winter window of lace along the pint

S-more citrus rind than pine resin

T-intial taste was a tad harsh , since has mellowed and become somewhat smooth

MF-good carbonation , feels full bodied

Ov-decent IPA , bit chewy at first ,

From John's Market in PDX. Pours a clear copper with three fingers of off white head. Lacings are plentiful. Aroma is resiney pine, some citrus, and bread notes. Taste is white grapefruit, leather, and a big push from the malts help the tongue deal with the hop oil resinous bitterness. Mouthfeel is full with good carbonation. Medium dry bitter finish. Still a bit of foam at the bottom of the glass. Overall a fine beer but maybe a bit too bitter for most Pale Ale fans. Close to an Imperial Pale Ale IMO.

22oz bottle into a tulip. Pours a clear amber color w/ a 1-finger sudsy eggshell head that leaves behind a thin film of lace.

Aroma is on the floral, herbal side with a vague suggestion of onion. Pretty muted.

Taste is likewise herbal and floral hops with a blend of biscuity pale and sweeter caramel malts. Some dried apricots and peaches in there too. Kind of earthy. Tastes like a sweeter, maltier Colorado style IPA. Has a surprising alcohol presence for a 6.5% beer. Finishes sharply bitter.

Mouthfeel is about average, medium bodied with a lingering aftertaste from the hops.

Overall a decent, drinkable IPA but nothing extraordinary here.

Poured from a bomber into a tall chalice.

A: Slightly hazy, light amber color with one finger of parchment-tinted foam head. Moderate lacing remains on the glass.

S: Mild caramel and mixed fruit makes this beer smell like an English-style pale ale, complete with a dusting of yeast-derived esters.

T: Begins off-dry, with medium-toast English malt qualities. Acidity is moderate into the middle where hops lend a faint peppery quality that makes them appear rather stale. The finish exhibits moderate bitterness alongside some cherry wood smoke and minerality that linger on the palate.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, by turns wet then drying on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This IPA is typical of those produced by Caldera; competently assembled overall, but with odd or questionable decisions regarding the application of hops. In this case the muted quality of the hops struggle to be noticed, leaving the rest of the beer to appear as a solid--but malt-focused--pale ale.

Pours a steady orange gold with 2 fingers of khaki cream head. Good retention and very nice thick lace all over the glass.

Bread and caramel malt dominate the nose. Light pine underneath. A bit earthy.

Lighter caramel in flavor, but stronger pine. A bit of toffee goes with the bread malt. Nice dry, arid hop finish. Even a bit tart.

Body is spot on. Esters are a bit strong here, so comes on a little thick for some. I liked it, though.

Overall, an easy drinking pale. My bottle says 6.2% abv, so just a tad lighter than listed.
