I often walked past this intriguing little colourful bottle in my local MLCC. Been meaning to try this beer for quite sometime. Anyway cut to the chase, i purchased one and very glad that I did.

On opening the bottle, the slight smell of Coffee and slight wiff off chocolate greet you. Also a wonderful smell off malts. Enjoying it already and not even tasted it yet!

The pouring of the beer produced swirling tones of brown and amber shades, finished off with a nice decent creamy head.

Now for the taste, the earlier smell off chocolate and coffee were now evident with my first taste, and the malts kicked in seconds later. I am enjoying this!

Mouthfeel excellent, a slight bubbly feel if that makes sense.
Overall I really enjoyed this delightful Dark Ale. I will not be walking past this little rascal again. Well worth a try.

The pour looked more towards a brown color, however, once in my nonic pint glass, the color leaned more towards a black color with dark brown to red hues along the side. A beautiful eggshell white foamy finger and a half's worth of head softly died off. Lots of fairly thick foamy lace.
The aroma had fairly sharp citrusy to orangey rind-like bitter hops rolling into a beaut roasty coffee beans and grounds with a nice dark chocolate nibs underscore. Subtle piney hops even further underneath.
The flavor started off bitter running through a blend of piney hops to citrusy/orange rind-like character. Mild aftertaste of roasty coffee tones and citrusy to piney hops. The
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Sturdy carbonation and ABV. Mellow crisp bitter citrus rind and pine in the finish.
Overall, nice American black ale or CDA depending who one talks to. I'd have again. Only thing I'd change is possibly getting the color closer to a full black appearance.

Taken from a dated, written review:

A: Pours cola brown/black, topped with a long-lasting, light tan head. A quarter inch of foam remains a couple minutes after pour.

S + T: An interesting malty nose and flavour. Almost a hint of vanilla in the aroma along with perhaps a bit of chocolate. Chocolaty flavour, with a very nice touch of hops. Hints of coffee, with a little note of tobacco box. This is a very nice tasting beer.

M: There is a creaminess to the mouthfeel, which is complemented by the carbonation.

O: An excellent beer, which surprised me. I'm very fond of this brew, which seems very well balanced and crafted.

Well, I'll be a Flying Monkey! I walked into Silantra the other day to scope out what was what when I spied this mischievous looking beer. I am stoked to sit down with the monkeys.

From the bottle: "Embrace the Darkness!"; "Normal is weird."; [under the cap] "I've decided not to have kids. The kids are taking it pretty hard." Haha.

I Pop!ped the cap on this brand-new, fresh bottle & let go with a heavy-handed pour, raising three-plus fingers of dense, foamy, deep-tan/light-brown head with excellent retention. Would you please go away so that I might have a sip?!? Nose smelled like a fire in an evergreen forest - loads of pine along with smoky roastiness. The lacing that developed was simply daunting. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) with NE-quality clarity & mahogany highlights. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste immediately let loose with a burnt/charcoal/smoky maltiness cooled by a pleasant & welcome minty, pine-y hoppiness in my mouth. IMHO, this is a flawed style from the perspective of a self-described, self-avowed hophead such as myself, but at least the dark malts were not as overwhelming as they usually are. I would not want a steady diet of this, but it was better than many. Finish was dry, but was it from the malt, the hops, or both? I just like my hops immediately discernible, not blanketed by dark malts.

12 oz bottle, Bottled Oct 18, 2016 etched onto the neck of the bottle....prolly why the hops seem kinda muted...oh well

Pours very dark brown under a lasting mocha cap, puffy and leaving a thick collar, low sheeting moderate thicker stick on the glass.

Moderate roast and definite dark toast on the nose.

More of the same on the palate, roasty/toasty/malty/bready, with some caramel, maple, darker malts and piney, bittering hops seriously drying out the back side...old school dark IPA. Worth a try

Poured into a chalice: color is dark brown with brown edges, head is tan, bubbles are fine, head lingers with a good top and laces the glass sides.

Smell is roast, coffee, chocolate, and then some coming hop in the form of pine and earth.

Taste is similar to the aroma with roast/chocolate/coffee malt flavor then light bitterness, not quite a black ipa/cascadian dark ale as the coffee/chocolate and lighter bitterness but still good flavor and execution.

Mouthfeel leans a bit dry with low carbonation.

Overall a good beer, lighter roast more sweetness than other dark ipas.
