Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery "Netherworld Cascadian Dark Ale"
12 fl oz. brown glass bottle, "BOTTLD JAN/04/2017" and sampled on MAY/18/2017
$2 @ Weis Market #231, Conshohocken, PA

Note via stream of consciousness: Upon popping the cap I can smell chocolate. I'm not sure if that's good or bad for a "Cascadian Dark Ale", although this used to be labeled an "India Pale Porter" where it would have fit just fine. So let's pour it... very dark mahogany brown that appears black in the full glass. The short head of tan is pretty dark. Decent head retention so far. Back to the aroma I definitely get chocolate and I'm not really finding too many hops. There's some light pine to it, and a light bit of citrus, but I was expecting to find a little more. There's some coffee to it as well, which is nice. On to the flavor... exactly as the nose suggests with a hint of caramel to the malt and clearer hops. They remain pretty much just pine and citrus, which I feel is mainly lemony, but there's also a kind of a tea-like note ~ not sure if that's hops, or malt, or a combination. Nicely balanced, not too bitter, but it finishes dry and some residual bitterness remains in the lingering aftertaste. Easy to drink. Medium-light in body and gently crisp. It's not a head-turner but it's certainly solid.

33cl bottle. Very dark brown pour with a medium height tan head. Notes of roasted coffee, pine resin, citrus hops, chocolate, roasted malts. Medium body, medium to high carbonation and a roasty and hoppy bitter-sweet finish.

From Cervezasespeciales. In Teku glass. After dinner. My new favourite american black ale. Great balance between roastyness and hoppyness, with a very moreish dry finish

Brown reddish colour, with a small head that fades soon, leaving some lace. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, dried fruits, resines. Medium body, roasted malts palate. Carbonation is OK. Taste of coffee, chocolate, pine, malts. Good.

Look - dark mahogany brown, barely translucent w/ a nice resilient foamy top.

Smell - clean, piney hop note

Taste - more pine, pleasant bitterness,

Feel - little bit thin, but not boring.

Overall - This is not a session beer for sure, bit it could fool you into thinking it was.

Pours a brownish color with copper edges and over a finger of head. The nose is primarily roasted malt but there is a trace of hoppiness underneath. The roasted malt and hop profile blend well with the roast edging out the hop bitterness.

A. Pours a dark black brown colour with a coffee and cream colour head. Some lacing on the glass.

S. Aroma is more herbal hops with a little malt.

T. The flavours are a mix of smokey roasted malt and herbal hops. Sort of almost burnt caramel and bitters. You may taste some alcohol too. The finish is more bitter than malty but long.

F. The mouthfeel is heavy and crisp. You can feel the foaminess of the carbonation in the back of your mouth and it's real creamy.

O. Overall I did really enjoy this beer. I love IPA's and this is very near to a black IPA. IBU is a little lower than a true IPA.

Pours dark brown in color. Auburn highlights show through when held to the light. A decent sized head sits atop the beer.

The aroma is hoppy, but not obscene. Malts, citrus hops, and dish soap also poke through in it's smell. The smell gets maltier the more it warms.

The flavor is overcasted by a mild citrus rind hop flavor. Finishes dry and earthy.

Thinner bodied than expected. Decent carbonation throughout. A decent beer, but not anything extraordinary.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear deep reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Great dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Incredible appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted bread, light smoke/char, floral, grass, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of bright citrus/pine hops and moderate roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted bread, light smoke/char, floral, grass, and roasted earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind and roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange rind, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, light smoke/char, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/pine hops and moderate roast/bready malt flavors; with a crisp malt/bitterness balance and no astringent flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, resinous/sticky, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent black IPA style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/pine hops and moderate roast/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
