This has become an old friend. (And is better than a few of them, too.)
I am very close to the Alstrom Bros on this rating. I see no need to repeat.
When American porters get this subtle in blending sweet and bitter, we will have arrived.

Reviewed in Roger Protz' " 300 Beers To Try Before You Die!"
Also on the bucket-list of "1001". Definitely do not miss this one.

Sampled back on 2/5/16. Comes in a single 330ml (11.2 ounce) bottle for $3.50 from Spirit World in Omaha. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a snifter glass.

Brew pours pitch-black in color with close to a 1-finger foamy beige head. A decent amount of sticky lacing was seen when sipped that stayed in place on the glass. Aroma is of dark roasted malts, dark fruits (cherry) with a hint of chocolate and coffee even. Bit more going on with the taste was there is a hint of caramel malt and maybe molasses as well. Very smooth and so very good. No bitterness is noted. Medium+-bodied with perfect carbonation. A fantastic brew from Sweden which is probably my first from that country. Worth trying for sure if you can find it.

L: Poured into a Pint Defiance tulip. Body is a very dark brown with a thin tan ring around the glass.

S: Smells like a Belgian strong dark or a scotch ale. Caramel malt, dark fruits, roasted coffee, and dark chocolate.

T: Same as the nose. The roastiness is more apparent.

F: Medium light bodied with mild carbonation. Body is a bit watery on the finish.

It is not often that I get excited about the prospect of reducing to Beer Backlog here as Chez Woody, but this one has me jazzed! I so rarely get to try Swedish beers & the double-plus bonus of a Baltic Porter really revs my engine.

From the bottle: "Carnegie Porter was brewed for the first time in 1836 and tastes the same today as it did then. Carnegie Porter has a creamy head with a scent of coffee. Its sweet and wellrounded [sic] flavor is balanced by the bitterness of the hops. Storage helps the flavor mature and enhances its harmony."

I Pop!ped the cap and gave it a pretty solid pour, resulting in a finger of fizzy, light-tan head with moderate retention, falling away to a skim of wisps. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with NE-quality clarity and garnet highlights. Nose was redolent with notes of: smoke; caramel; dark chocolate; dried, dark cherries and molasses. Yow! Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but near it. The taste was great - leathery with a cherry flavor, followed by a dark chocolate richness. I find 5.5% VERY hard to believe, Mr. Smart! Would you believe that the entire building is surrounded by a troop of angry Boy Scouts, each one armed with a loaded slingshot? Enough of this tomfoolery! Finish was semi-sweet, close to semi-dry, but not quite there. Jeez, Louise, I really like this beer!

Bottle from Boise Coop. Right in the wheelhouse for a classic porter. Dark, sweet and malty, pour has nice fluffy head which leaves streaky lacing. Nose is sweet malt, leading into flavors of molasses, peat and sweet malts. Classic porter.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Deep walnut brown, with a very nice ruby edge for the body color. Head manages only about a finger tall on the pour, no lacing, but a fine milky tan color head and mixed soapy to creamy top. A bit of ring lace manages to stick around in places.

Really interesting nose. Mild clove notes and sticky almost licorice like qualities. Hints more to molasses but not as strong, with a real thick sensation. Bakery like almost pumpernickel and thick dough, a real dark unleavened bread sensation permeates throughout. Very neat and inviting but also quite unexpected. Almost a bit of meat jerky like quality aromas as well.

Palate brings much of the same and a good amount of pleasure. Light bodied simple classic roast qualities, but hints of mild molasses and licorice in the mid palate not unlike the the expected nose. A real nice controlled sweetness that comes somewhere between sweet milk and molasses. Creamy light finish with a mouthfeel and flavor that hints at a much bigger brew than the abv would indicate as well. Chewy, with a distinct palate for a porter. Bit of a prickly carbonation finish that also kicks in amongst the thick body too.

Very interesting classic unique brew. Hard to nail this one down, it's in it's own little space for sure.

Aroma is dark malts, toffee and, annoying, cola. The flavor is dark malts, toffee/caramel, the same annoying slight cola, mild chocolate and an acidic/slightly sweet finish. Definitely could've done without the cola, although it did fade thankfully.

12oz. bottle served in a can glass. Best before 30 October 15 printed on the back label. Pours the color and clarity of cola with a loose, 1/8th inch, khaki-colored head the quickly disperses into an oily slick and a thin tight band around the shoulders. Nose is slightly vinous, but I also get dark fruits and carob. Taste consistent with nose - fairly dull and subdued with a slight, wet cardboard presence. Mouthfeel is light in body with a mild, even carbonation. All and all, decent but perhaps past its prime. I'll have to try to procure a fresher bottle and update my notes. Not recommended for extended cellaring.
