First introduced in 1836.

Strong beers were banned in Sweden 1923-1956.

The 5.5 % original recipe was re-introduced in 1985 as a beer fermented with both top and bottom yeast.

In 1993, the yeast was changed to a single bottom-fermenting strain.

In 2009, the label design and name was changed from "Carnegie Stark-Porter" to "Carnegie Porter".

Carnegie porter 5.5 Porter 2010 edition. They brew another, lighter version as well.

Pours brown with ruby highlights. A nice khaki colored head forms and has staying power. Lacing is abundant. Aroma of deeply roasted malts, bready, and a touch of sea salt. Develops of robust malty flavor, with just a faint notion of smoke used to dry the malts. There is a complimentary flavor of a mild tea like hop balance. Mildly fruity ale yeast is apparent in the finish as well as a
Iight herbal bitterness. Mouthfeel is smooth, delicate carbonation and very easy to drink. In fact, it took me longer to enter this than to drink it. A fine Sweedish export.

2006 vintage.

Thin tan head atop a black/brown beer. Some head retention, no lacing.

Roasted malt, chocolate.

Dark malts. Slight metalic taste due to age. Slight cherry flavor came out as it warm, I like that a lot.

Medium mouthfeel, medium carbonation.

Enjoyed it, held up amazingly for how old/low ABV it was. Heard it was a relatively cheap one to aquire, will be on the lookout for older vintages in the future.

This is a 2004 vintage, served in an imperial pint.

Dark blackish brown with a 1 finger tan head. No lacing, but decent retention.
Smells of rich, thick malt with notes of caramel, toffee, and chocolate.
The beer tastes just as I'd expect- roasty roasty malts with hints of cocoa and coffee. An acrid smoke character is warmly inviting.

The body is hefty, but creamy and sturdy. Good low carbonation level is spot on.

Overall-- this is nice. I'll be grabbing some more of this to sample at various stages of aging.

2010 bottle. Picked up on a whim from Julio's Liquors. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a deep dark almost black hue with a creamy almost two finger mocha head that fades to leave minimal side lacing but nice clouding.

S - Not bad aromas here. Predominantly roast malts and chocolate notes. Slight metalic aromas though.

T - Pretty good flavours. More subtle than usual, good deep rich roasted malts and light chocolate. Very smooth.

M - Quite smooth and creamy with just a little bit of carbonation. Feels slightly thin though.

O - Overall, this isnt a bad baltic porter. I wouldn't buy it again though as there are some great represenations of this style elsewhere.

Ordered a bottle of this at the Allentown Brew Works once. I was shocked to see how much they were charging for this brew. I could have found it cheaper and which I would have let it in their cooler. Anyway, The beer poured out as a nice looking rich black color. The head was big and strong looking at first but settled down to just a thin tan creamy looking film over top of the brew. The lacing was light on the glass. The smell was full of roasted malts and just some minimal fruit elements shining through. The taste of the beer has a bold burnt bitterness up front, and some dark fruit sweetness which faded into a dark chocolate dry aftertaste. The mouthfeel of the beer had a decent thickness to it. Overall it was way too expensive at $15 a bottle. Should have been half that I think. But other than the price it was pretty good.

Bottle into Westlveteren goblet in Stockholm, Sweden. Reviewed live.

A: One finger head of nice cream lacing, good thickness, and fair to bad retention. Colour is a solid black.

Sm: Raspberry fruit ester hops, cream, caramelized malt, and I assume barley. Me nose is broken; sorry lads.

T: Fruit estery body alongside nice cream, slight chocolate, and restrained caramelized malt. Complex enough. Built and balanced well, just not bold or inspired.

Mf: Smooth and wet, with adequate but not overdone coarseness and thickness. There is some strange dryness on the finish that isn't really welcome considering the dying ester flavour that accompanies it.

Dr: Average range ABV, very drinkable, and of a high price. The quality is nothing special.

A- This beer pours a dense black body with no sign of carbonation or light getting through. There is a thick bubbly light tan head that last for a good bit.

S- The aroma of cream and dark roasted malt is well blended with some Munich malt qualities about it.

T- The soft black malt has a coffee hint without the bitterness and a smooth mellow tang to it. There is a mineral water taste to it as the beer warms but it is pleasant. The finish has a touch of roasted malt with a faint smoke quality to it.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a slightly slippery texture and no alcohol heat noticed.

O- The well-blended flavors of dark malt are smooth and very easy to drink but still have some nice depth. There were some grain and pot caramel qualities that are hard to describe in there. It is a great "recreation" of a historic beer and a lovely session beer.

500ml bottle: Mine was marked "ARGANG 2006", although I bought it recently. This one pours an inky very dark brown color. Mine had about no head on it whatsoever. A little bit of a sweeter aroma. Caramel and toffee, with just a faint roastiness in there also. A bit of sweetness in the taste. Coffee, chocolate, caramel, toffee and a hint of roastiness dominate the taste. A touch of slickness on the tongue. Nice!

A: Pours a slightly thin looking black color with about a 1/2 in tan head.

S: I picked up a ton of bitter coffee at first, but it mellowed as the beer warmed a bit. Chocolate and some roasted malt as well.

T: Much sweeter than I expected. Espresso, chocolate, chocolate cake, roasted malt and maybe a touch of hops towards the finish. Pretty tasty. Mouthfeel is slightly thin but has a nice creamy feel.

Dark reddish brown, almost black. Foam does not stay for long.

The smell is dark, sweet caramel. No detectable hop character, almost no fruitiness and very little of the roasted notes I would expect to find.

Tasting it, the roasted character that was so lacking in the smell finally arrive. And it is accompanied by even more caramel sweetness, and clear hints of liqorice. Bitterness is low from the start but grows to and appropriate level. A subtle hint of tobacco finishes.

Mouthfeel is a little on the thin side, for the type, but it works.

Overall a good rather than excellent beer. A little extra mouthfeel and definitely more complexity would have promoted it to great. Although I have never tasted the old top fermented version I can safely say that this beer would be ages better as a top fermented one.

Black as night, with a thick head of tan foam. Thin but attractive lace.

Nose says caramel and toffee.

Tasting reveals a really sweet porter. I get more toffee, caramel, and a little chocolate. Maybe this bottle was stored too long (or in improper conditions), but the bottle says best by 2016! Nonetheless, it seems something's off here.

Anyhow, I can envision a fresher bottle being a fine session porter, but this bottle didn't cut it.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance-Deep brown-black with nice ruby highlights and brilliant clarith. Moderate off-mocha head has pretty good retention and leaves some nice lacing.

Aroma-Bready, caramel, chocolatey, molasses, bread pudding, and lightly roasty, with hints of dark fruit. Sweet, with low to no hops. Very nice malt complexity on the aroma.

Flavor-Bread and chocolate with flavors of plum, prune, and grape. On the mid-palate, some sweet caramel and molasses shows through. Fades to a light roast flavor with some chocolate, toast, and fruits. Rather sweet, but dries out a bit as the roast asserts itself.

Mouthfeel-Medium to medium full body, with moderately low carbonation and a very smooth, creamy mouthfeel.

A very solid baltic porter, if on the low end of the alcohol spectrum. The flavor and aroma are quite good, though I do find it to be a little bit sweet for my taste. Still, fantastic.

Picked up a bottle of this at a shop in New Milford.

Appearance is near-black with a one finger tan head.
Carnegie Porter smells of coffee, roasted malt, raisins. It tastes sweet, chocolate coming out, more roasted malts and coffee. MF leans towards lighter with a creamy texture. This porter from Sweden is very good and pairs well with chocolate or other desserts.

Pours a blackish body w/ good head and minimal lace ring w/ a slightly dry roasted, coffeesue malt aroma, even bready, as well as little sticky sweetness. More of the same w/ the beer as it is lighter bodied, minimal carbonation so it passes smooth and easy, almost creamy, w/ sweet caramel, cocoa and a touch of vanilla (maybe) along with a little dry malt taste (roasted or coffee, or something like bread/dough/yeast). Simplistic and not overwhelming but well-crafted and a great sipper to have after a meal.

2009 Vintage

Ingmar Bergman, Strindberg, Peter Forsberg, Michael Thelvin and Abba use to come to mind when I thought of Sweden's contribution to civilization. Now I have to include the astounding Carnegie Porter as well having just polished off a bottle in short work.

Poured partially into an ISO tasting glass with the lion's share in a high tumbler.

Lovely soft dark chocolately roasty nose. Pours a dark brown black which while perhaps not a crystal clear in colour as I might have expected but gives a deep brown shine at the bottom of the glass. Slick slightly rocky tan head.

Beautiful smooth roasty chocolate-like taste to start. Velvety suave medium firm body. Effortlessly luscious but controlled chocolate and wonderfully succulent. Classy, firm, restrained, luxurious, complete.

Undoubtedly benchmark porter. Class in a glass. Let the prostrating begin.

Poured into a snifter.

Pours a jet black with a finger or two of light mocha colored head that drops fairly quickly, with lacing evident.

Aromas of light roasty grain, with a hint of sourness. Caramel and chocolate.

Flavors of light chocolate, light roasted grains, a little sourness, very smooth and creamy natured. No hop flavors. Finish is short, with a sour and caramel malt note.

Mouthfeel is medium/light, with creamy carbonation.

Very drinkable. Very nice foreign style porter. Could a number of these in one sitting, very sessionable.

Poured from a large 25 oz. brown bottle into a standard pint glass. "Argäng 2004" vintage.

Appearance: A thick dark brown color, nearly jet black...little to no light gets through when held to the light. Has a short lived foamy tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves a little light lacing. Tiny carbonation bubbles, but not nitro.

Smell: Like caramel and chocolate malts. Slight sour notes. Almost smells like a pan of dark chocolate brownies!

Taste: Dark chocolate, caramel, coffee beans all come through...this is a stout and malt lovers dream! Rich and complex stout flavors, but no single flavor is overpowering. It's a smooth chocolate-coffee-caramel tasting malty brew with just the right amount of light carbonation to let the flavors shine. If you like Guinness Draught...try this. It's got a ton more flavor!

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied, creamy, light carbonation makes this a smooth one to drink down.

Drinkability: Stout lovers (and I am one) will really enjoy this world class stout. A huge mouthful of flavor with every sip (and the flavors only get better as it warms). Will definitely seek this one out again when I'm in the mood for a flavorful stout!

Pours dark as night. Completely opaque with a cratered tan head.

Smells like you'd expect. Roasty malts dominate, with some chocolate and coffee making cameos.

Has a smoky, roasty chocolately taste with some bittering coffee notes in the finish.

Starts with a creamy feel before giving way to a bittering dry finish. Lacks some carbonation, but that was ok.

Really drinkable. It's creamy and goes down easy. It's full of good flavors. There is some bitterness in the finish, but nothing overwhelming. Alcohol is only slightly above average. Very easy to empty a glass.

Found this at a local store the other day...the label says "ARGANG 2004". Not sure if that means this is '04 vintage or what. I guess we'll see if this is any good. (Poured into my favorite Stone nonic)

A - Opaque dark brown body topped by a one finger tan fluffy head. Decent head retention and moderate lacing.

S - Sweet caramel malt and toffee seems to be the dominant aromas here. Not highly aromatic but it does smell very nice.

T & M - That same caramel malt provides the backbone for this brew, with a hint of milk chocolate and some minor hop bitterness toward the back end. This actually reminds me a bit of a milk stout, as there seems to be a bit of lactose present and lingering throughout. Medium bodied with a bit of a creamy mouthfeel.

D - Very high drinkability factor. I'm not sure if this is 2004 vintage, but if it is it held up very nicely for the last 7 years! A 5.5% ABV brew should not have held up this nicely. Either way, a very nice example of the style.

Poured into a Great Lakes snifter. Medium thick creamy head dispersed with large bubbles. Chocolate black in color with no visible carbonation. Aroma is a strong almond note and some fusel alcohol. Mouthfeel is creamy just a touch above thin, definitely not a stout. Finish is dry across the tongue and and on the roof of the mouth. Flavor is a good subtle roast with a mellow chocolate flavor.

2010 "Klass III" paper label on the front, blue B. United import label on back.

Very light bodied, roasted malt dominates the nose, coffee notes, light roasty bitterness in the taste. Not as robust as vintage versions it seemed. Smooth, coffee and bakers chocolate flavors. Fairly easy drinking, but one bottle satisfies the curiosity of the "Klass III" label, which wasn't too different from the original "Starkporter".

2001 on the label.

This is the 3rd bottle i've had, and xgabe's review convinced me to drink the one i've been cellaring. Cap makes a good pffft sound. Pours into a wide mouth chalice with a good finger of mocha foam. Color is black through the middle. It reduces itself to a skim quickly, but any head is impressive after 6 years in the bottle. A nice ring of foam remains.

Cola and dark fruit, some prune aroma. Almost doughy, it seems to have some yeast character left in it. No roast or boozy sweetness that's almost the norm in Baltic Porters.

Mellow mouthfeel with lower carbonation. It's lighter than some, but age is also a factor here. Much less sweetness than a fresher bottle.

Carob flavor is intertwined with prune, chocolate, tobacco leaf, and a somewhat musty character. A smooth sipper that has no trace of alcohol. It's more of a dessert/nightcap type of thing. Great way to end my Swedish session after a couple IPAs.

It's a #1 cellar candidate, keep several as long as you can, that's my advice.

Poured a dark brown in the dim lit bar lights. The nose was quite malted & milk chocolate to which my friend, Nick exclaimed, "Smells like Whoppers"! but as it warmed raisins & pitted-fruit took a stronghold.

The taste also changed as it warmed; the initial dusty chocolate slowly morphed into a dry peaty-smokiness before settling into a molasses meets tannic-bark-like flavor reminiscent of a Cabernet about to go bad (but it really worked for awhile).

Pushing 7 years old (2004), this beer needed another good 45 minutes exposed to oxygen before becoming something worthy of that much aging. Although I enjoyed discussing this beer in relationship to Scandinavian cuisine and dreaming of foraging for my dinner in some remote Icelandic forest; back in the real world I found the middle taste most enjoyable and by the last few sips I was completely over this beer.

I would like to try both a younger & older version before settling on my verdict.

From a 16 oz. bottle vintage 2004. Poured into my Guiness Porter pint glass. #5 of my Christmas mixed 6-pack. Best by May 2014.

Almost pitch black in the glass with a solid 4 finger mounding tannish head and a dollop of sweet foam trying to run down the side. Light lacing.

A somewhat metallic aroma, or perhaps one of acidic coffee and moldy books. After it warms a bit a more pleasant aroma of malt appears, like sweet coffee and moldy books.

Tastes a bit flat. Roast malt and moldy books. Some bitter dark chocolate.

Decent medium-thick mouthfeel. No real bite of carbonation. Some faint warming alcohol.

Even with the aroma and flavor of moldy books predominating, this was rather easy to drink. Perhaps this bottle was stored improperly. It didn't taste skunked, but there certainly seemed to be some degradation here.

Stark-Porter 2006 Vintage with a best by date of January 2016.

Very dark brown that appears black in the glass. One inch of head forms but quickly settles to a thin cap. Moderate amount of spotty lacing is left on the glass.

Has that European lager aroma going on. As the beer opens up there comes some added complexity. Subtle hints of chocolate, dark malt, coffee, and the slightest touch of cherries.

The taste is a little more impressive. Slightly bitter chocolate, a little roasted malt, and a faint fruitiness melds nicely into a good flavor. There is also some earthiness. Not as bigged flavored as American brewers intrepertation of the style but more of a traditional beer. I am also surprised by the decade long aging ability. I cannot see aging helping this beer at all.

The body is not very large. In fact it feels a bit watery. Considering the low ABV, I am not that surprised. Just enough carbonation to give some life to the beer.

As I worked my way through the bottle, I came to appreciate the beer more. Not my favorite Baltic Porter but nice considering its historic significance.

A: The beer is nearly jet black in color (some traces of amber are visible at the edges of the glass when it is held up to the light) and poured with a thin creamy tan head that faded into a thin ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass and lacy patterns in the center.
S: The smell isn't that strong, but has aromas of chocolate, licorice, molasses and roasted malts.
T: The taste is complex, well balanced and similar to the smell. There is a mild amount of bitterness in the finish that contrasts with a slight amount of sweetness in the initial taste.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a bit thin on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
D: Unlike many of the beers In the style, this beer is extremely easy to drink; it wouldn't be difficult to have several of these in an evening because it isn't very filling.
