English style barleywine for sure, as tastes maple and caramel. Good mouthfeel, but a complexity of malt rather than adding in some bitterness for good measure. Some colour and head. A sipper, yet good drinkability over a meal at that.A little boozy. Trade with continent.

330 mL bottle poured into a Kate the Great snifter. 2009 bottle.

Appearance - Pours a clear amber with a strong reddish hue. Nice off white head for a beer of this gravity. Doesn't retain so well, but still an impressive showing.

Smell - Definitely has an alcohol aroma, but it isn't overpowering at all. Light malts in abundance, giving it a grainy aroma. Maybe some sherry and apple notes.

Taste - Much more of a light caramel flavor here. Just a hint of the darker sugars and a strong bready malt character. The apple aspect is less intense. Finishes with a hint of dryness and a strong bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Dry and very bitter. Not as boozy as I would have expected. It's a sipper, but I find myself finish it faster than I would have thought.

Overall - Tasty with an interesting take on the malt character. Shies away from being a standard caramel bomb of an English barleywine and instead goes for the slightly oxidized pale malt notes. Interesting and kinda nice.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a cloudy medium orange-brown amber, almost toffee colored. Nice one finger fine white head with good retention and lacing. A light caramel malt and faint light fruit aroma. Constant, attractive carbonation. Looks nice. Delicious caramel malt, toffee, raisins, complex fruit flavor. A bit of a hop bite at the finish. Nicely balanced and integrated. Medium to heavy bodied and creamy. I really liked this barleywine. I wish it wasn't so pricey.

2008 vintage: Purchase at Capones

Clear dark caramel hue yielding a 3/4" white head that quickly fades to a fizzled cap....

Smell: nice caramels...figs..resinous earthy hops....dark fruit and honey suckle...

Taste: definitely smooth dark fig it warms it really brings out the caramel....nutty side...some heat but very well disguised for the high abv it has....somewhat similar to j.w. lees...faint brandy notes

Mouthfee: nice smooth chewyness...great sipper

overall a very good rendition and offering...

Poured into a snifter. Label says 2009.

A- Pours a murky dark copper color with a 1/4 inch head that fades at once to a thin ring around the edge of the glass and spotty surface foam. Resilient clots of lacing.

S- Blast of oak, malt sweetness and alcohol. Some astringency. Hops have a big hand in the aroma too, bringing a slight citrus smell along with it. This is one that seems to be firing on all cylinders. Minty?

T- Intense flavor upfront with all of the elements in the aforementioned aroma section, but then it levels off into a smooth, pleasant finish. Extremely well-balanced with no ingredient overriding the other. Bitter aftertaste and notes of oak plus toffee. Astringency and booze are toned down in the flavor compared to the aroma.

M- Surprisingly easygoing for the intensity of flavor and alcohol it carries. Not overly dry but certainly has a bit of sting in the front. Medium-low carbonation has held up for the 2+ years it's been sitting.

O- What a gem! Would have never known about it if it weren't for Total Wine & More's vast selection of imports. One of the best barleywines I've laid lip to.

A clear deep chestnut amber brew, an off-white head, good lacing and some curtains.

Smelling of toffee, muffin batter, butter scotch, nuts and almonds. Some vanilla.

Starting with brown bread, brown sugar, syrup, dates, raisins, some bitter orange peel. Eggnog.

Medium carbonation, small bubbles, smooth, oily, sticky. A warm feeling (of alcohol), a big body.

A very sweet and warm barley wine. A real candy shot. Wonder how it will mature. This was the 2010 vintage, 10% ABV.

Looks really beautiful with a huge tan head, and an amazing deep red, almost crimson.

Notes of port and melted brown sugar, dried fruits, dates, raisins and prunes - a very interesting maltiness!

Really flavoursome. An almost overpowering presence of caramellized sugar, really huge, almost supressing the dark fruits that are still abundant. Figs, plums and dried peach come through, as well as a hint of apples and plums. A good note of red dessert wine as well, sweet.

Smooth and approprietly viscous, with a light carbonation, alm ost too light.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a bright orange color and a cloudy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, somewhat long-lasting head. Average lacing.

S: A very sharp aroma of hops, caramel, and some fruit.

T: An interesting flavor here. Caramel, raisins, hops, malt, and some other light fruits. Different from what you normally get in an English Barleywine, but very flavorful nonetheless.

M: A highly carbonated beer with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

D: A very solidly made, drinkable beer.

The colour is red-amber; the large head is compact and beige.

The smell is mild and a bit bitter. Notes of dried fruits and raisins. Do I find a synthetic hint of esters?

The taste is spicy with sweet notes of raisins, apricots, deep fry-oil, some alcohol and walnuts. A slowly growing bitterness and notes of fruit candy in the aftertaste.

The carbonation is mellow and soft. The liquid is thick. Overall mouthfeel is luxurious.

A very elegant and well crafted beer with a good bitterness in the finish.

Date: 01/24/2012
Type: 11.2oz. Bottle
Vintage: 2009
Glass: Half Acre Chalice

Pours a light brown in color w/ a 1/2 finger white head that leaves minimal lacing. Aromas of bouquet of fruits comprised of dark fruits(raisin/plum/fig) and light fruits(apple/pear), and some basement mustiness. The atste was big fruit up front as described in the nose, followed by caramel/toffee, and finished w/ mild hop bite and basement mustiness. Borderline medium bodied, almost thin, but rich in flavor. Easy to drink, rich, but not cloying at all.

Overall, this brew really surprised me. Kind of like one of those cars you call a "sleeper". On the outside the car is rusted and really looks like hell, but little do you know that it has about 600HP due to the $50K soaked into the motor and tranny. Good brew, but also very strange.
