Poured into a snifter

A: Almost opaque black, razor thin head that dissapates almost instantly. Little to no lacing.

S: Tuna bomb for sure. It seriously smells like I put my nose in a freshly opened can of tuna. Trying not to vomit at this point, but I'll soldier on. For science.

T: Some really bad chocolate, a hint of barrel, and a weird nauseating flavor I can't quite place.

M: Low carbonation and very thin.

Overall: probably the worst beer I've ever had the misfortune of buying a 4 pack of. I Never thought I'd be calling any beer a tuna bomb.

Smells like coffee. Sour on the front. Straight up coffee on the back. Interesting beer in my opinion. Definitely not infected! They nailed what they were attempting...a sour stout

12 oz bottle, snifter

A – Black, opaque, pour is medium-thin, no real viscosity to it. Light brown bubbly foam, maybe a centimeter, rises on top and dissipates quickly.

S – Roasted malt, coffee, semi-dark chocolate. Fruit esters and a strong impression of lactic acid / lactobacillus. Hops, if that’s what I’m getting, are floral, with some citrus, resiny notes.

T – Definitely infected with either lacto or acetobacter, and based on everything I’ve read about this beer it is not intentional, so I am counting it as a flaw. Even if it was intentional, it’s not particularly pleasant, though not as awful as I had seen it described. A bit too acidic, mostly. There’s also some tannic astringency. Bitter, roasty malts in the background, some chocolate. No hop presence.

M – Very low sweetness, some mild bitterness from the malts, the acidity from I assume acetobacter is high, beyond puckering. Medium-thin body, with moderate-low carbonation.

O – Very disappointing. I think there’s a good beer underneath the infection, but it is overwhelming. Also very put off by the fact that they have changed the label and description on their website to pretend the souring was planned all along, rather than making clear that there’s a MAJOR flaw. Shame on the brewery.

Some people can't appreciate a good sour beer. I think it's outstanding. GTH with your poor reviews.

This is a "one-off sour stout" according to the brewer, judging from reviews others expected something different, found it to be an an exemplary sample of that style, wish that bjcp would add this style as its quite diff. from the trad. impy.

Bottled Aug. 2014

L - Pours a dark body with an espresso head. Black body and tan head. Good head and retention.

S - Honestly reminds me of tuna salad. The nose leaves a lot to be desired. Smells of soured barrel and roasted malts.

T - And yup, it's infected. Pretty much notes of an infected barrel aged stout.

F - Medium bodied and carbonation. Has a wet finish.

O - Was hoping for more (being local), but I hope they get it right on the second batch. Though honestly I love a good sour, so I dig it. But, it isn't what it should be.

Well, no tuna in this keg. On tap, deep opaque black, no head but lots of residual lacing. I get bourbon and Brett on the nose. Not the best I've had, but not the worst. A little bittersweet chocolate on the tongue, with oak sour on the sides and more on the back of the tongue. A little light in the mouth for a stout.

Overall, a surprise. Not as horrible as some suggest, but not the best barrel aged stout either.
